TV stand/table on CL. Thoughts?

We're desperate for a new TV and decided on a 48" LCD. What's holding me back is that I have hunted high and low and can't find the perfect TV table. The room is quite small, and my aesthetic is, well, leaning toward English Country, and I love vintage and antique furniture.

I found this on CL today at lunchtime, and I am wondering if I re-finish it, replace the mesh with glass, how you think it would look. The size is right. So, what do you think? TIA!

Is it a flat-panel or rear projection LCD? I ask b/c if it's rear projection, you'll need to make sure it's deep enough to fit the TV. Another thing to consider is all the open shelving. Are you OK with your electronics showing all the time along with having things to display on the open side shelves? Where will you store your DVDs?

I'd need more measurements. I'd want to make sure the interiors of the drawers would hold plenty of DVDs b/c I don't like mine to show. I'd also want to make sure the center shelf dimensions were long/tall/deep/wide enough to hold my electronic equipment b/c you can't tell from that picture.

I think it would be a lovely piece when refinished and with glass inserts.

I have been looking for the same english country kind of thing for my new 42" tv (still in the box.. in the middle of the living room). I think it looks GREAT.. my only hesitation is that it is a touch high for a small room. What's your viewing distance?

I have been looking for weeks without luck so if I found a piece like you did, I'd make it work! I even think I like the mesh on the doors. Go for it!

As a professional furniture designer, I had to laugh when I saw the picture that you described with "furniture" in quotes. You have to start somewhere, however. Did he have his plans on paper before he began? The TV looks a bit high, but then I've had a TV fall over in a quake, and so that position is a bit scary for me. If the cabinet is on casters, there is less of a chance of falling over in a quake. I remember a good sized quake in Washington state back in the February 2001. My father built furniture when he was young, as did his father and my mother's grandfather (in Alsace). I guess I have furniture in my blood (among other things). You might want to consider going to a store that sells molding to add a bit of decoration to the front. I've built very little furniture myself, and most of that was very utilitarian - like the stand for my scanner, which covers my computer and has a shelf for paper. I have a very tight space that I had to fit that into, but it's very functional. I might build a shelf to go beside my stove in the kitchen. I was going to build a stand for my widescreen TV, but I went to the unfinished furniture store in Culver City and found one that matched my dimensions to a fraction of an inch. I bought a three-drawer cabinet for the surround sound system to go beside the TV and hold DVDs in the drawers, and this I also found at the same store exactly to my specifications. All I had to do was stain the furniture, and then I put a beeswax finish on it, which is easy to maintain and repair. The TV delivery people were very impressed with the stand I had for the TV. They couldn't believe it fit so perfectly, but I got lucky. A lot of commercial furniture is terrible, but the furniture at the unfinished store is all solid wood and not badly made, with some exceptions. Lars

gosh haha my post sure was rambling post! OSH - oh, I will definitely wheel and deal. I do have a credit at the original store and while they don't stock much hickory white, they can order it so I will use up my credit with them. I will also work with the new store to get competitive prices. I honestly don't know how much was markup and how much was the higher grade finish. I am not shy about asking though-- or letting them know that I can get a better price elsewhere. Parma.. I can't imagine I will be unhappy with the HW piece. But as you noted, the key is really to have a person there to help guide me and reign me in when needed. I am very opinionated and I like things just the way I like them but I do need a second set of eyes too. I really feel like this designer gets that and gets me and knows just how to help me without pissing me off. (since we are so similar, I know you know what I mean!). I am really just so impressed that after an hour one saturday a month ago that she can go through all their manufacturers and pieces and select the very same buffet for me. The owner did pass along the fact that I was looking at the FH piece but still, that is so little to go on. I absolutely love the table--- it is just what I wanted for my dining room. I have been wanting a round pedestal table for years. I thought I wanted antique tiger oak, but everytime I saw one, it looked so heavy. I wanted something more "open". I wanted a table that would look stunning with just a vase of flowers. A table that I could sit the nieces and nephews at with grilled cheese and not have it seem silly. I really think that table meets all my needs. BTW, I never told you but I lust for your kitchen chairs (the metal ones-- harden, I think?). They also have that look I love. My pup will be ok, I think. He's very old and I suspect he may have a more serious problem that is causing the pancreatitis (which is usually caused by eating something they should not-- rich foods, etc). His system has settled down now (after 72 hr with no food and very limited water)and he's eating just plain rice now. I'll add some protein in tomorrow but already he is back to running and playing and behaving like a puppy again. Thanks to both of you-- thanks for sharing my excitement. :)

No plasma here yet, but I do use a vintage oak buffet for our TV stand. Here's a photo from today...the kitty was having a cozy nap. Sigh...what is it about photos that make all the 'stuff' show up more??? Gotta figure out what to do with some of that 'stuff' on the floor...except for the big fossil. That's too cool....or maybe it needs a table to go on. Anyway, the buffet works for us...hides lots of components.

I could swear I started a thread way earlier this morning, asking about mounting a tv and hiding the wires. I am looking at similar consoles as well as simpler tv stands that are lower. I have tried to find images and it seems really that you would be fine with the height of those cabinets which are very attractive. I just wonder if it would be in the way of the chaise part of your sectional but probably would be fine. Here is my dumb question---- where are the wires to the TV?

It'll be a flat-panel. We don't have many DVDs to store. I probably won't have much on display, but I like the drawer for the remotes. I'll ask her for the exact measurements. I, too, am a little concerned about the height. The viewing distance is, I think, about 10 feet, but I'll have to measure it. I did e-mail and tell the seller what I had planned and asked if it seemed possible, but I haven't heard back yet.

Donna, unless you have older equipment, I'd be really surprised if it doesn't fit in the shelving area in the middle. I think the combination of shelves and drawers is great.

I also have about a 10' viewing distance and I am trying to stay in the 30-32" range.. but, again, the piece will work so well that I would deal with the slightly elevated viewing angle. I'd much rather have it a bit high than too low.

Hope all the measurements work for you-- it's a great solution!

I think it would be great. I agree that a little too high would be better than low. Nice find. Be sure to post pics when you get it.

I have had the exact same struggle. I found this really ugly sofa table at Salvation Army store for $20. I spray painted it flat black. This is temporary solution until I can have a built in cabinet designed and built. Real TV stands for this size were $500 and up.
