How about a thread on dating stories?? For instance, describe the best date you've ever had. Or, the worst one (hopefully not too many of those). Any funny stories or embarrassing moments you can now look back on and laugh??

I am sure I could tell a few, but just can't think of one right now. I just wanted to say that I am glad you posted, and to say "Hi" from Kansas City, Missouri!

I haven't dated since 1986. I gratefully married my ex-husband so I wouldn't HAVE to date anymore!

Years ago, I had just spread a bunch of purchased compost all over the flower beds when I saw a couple of slender leaves emerging, pretty things, & I gently dug around until I found that they were growing from teensy little bulbs. I was a sort of new gardener, & I was (& still am) very excited by the sort of serendipity or happenstance or feral nature of garden surprises, so I watched the new little bulbs to see what kind of flower they made. I watered 'em, I mulched 'em, I guarded them like they were solid gold. One day, before I got any flowers but after they had popped up all over the place, a neighbor looked at my little experiment & asked, "what are you going to do about all that nut grass?" I stammered out what had happened, including the mulch/water/compost, & he thought for a minute & said, "Well, it *is* a very healthy-looking stand of nut grass."

Mine is an example of me perhaps being someone's worst date: My good friend and former roommate Jeff, had been dating a woman named Glenda who knew Stephanie through the horse world. All four of us happened to be at a party at the house of a woman, Lynn, who worked at the same place as Jeff and who also had horses. I remember having seen Stephanie at the party but being my usual shy, fearful self, I didn't interact with her. Reportedly after the party Glenda was talking with Stephanie who was complaining about not finding anyone she liked, and Glenda suggested that since I was at the party alone, that "Bob" might be interested and/or available. "Who's Bob" Stephanie responded. She emailed me shortly thereafter, introducing herself and after a short exchange asked whether I'd be interested in going to see Laurie Anderson in concert at the Wexner Center at the Ohio State University. I responded "I love Laurie Anderson, I have several of her albums. In fact I'm already going to that concert with Jeff, he has two tickets." She suggested that perhaps we could go out to dinner before the concert, and we decided upon Falafal House, a Middle Eastern restaurant at the south end of the Ohio State campus. We met at the restaurant, and she brought her roommate Jenny with her. The three of us ordered and chatted while waiting for the food to arrive. And chatted more during dinner. Finally, glancing at my watch, I said I have to hurry off to the concert, I don't want to be late. I said, "Bye, I had a great time." And I left. She and Jenny walked back to their apartment together while I went to meet my friend Jeff at the concert. Now anyone with even a bit of sense would probably ask, "What were you thinking?" "Why didn't you simply tell Jeff, 'Hey man I need your ticket' or tell him 'I have other plans' and just get two tickets yourself? My only response to that is: there were probably good reasons why I was single. I was painfully shy, emotionally immature, and terribly frightened of being rejected or looking foolish. I couldn't convince myself to ask someone out, and even the few times I did go out with someone I usually screwed it up somehow through my cluelessness. This time seemed it was going to turn out the same. While she and Jenny were walking home they were talking and between them they had just about decided that was it for me. Big red flag. Fortunately, Stephanie decided to give me another chance and emailed me the next day asking how the concert was.

Best and worst horticulture related careers to start in?

Industries (Pubic gardening, greenhouse worker, arborist, agriculture, etc), company size (small, big, institutional), etc....? Looking for what would make the best career. As far as my story goes, I'm going to be graduating with a two year degree from a Horticulture/Landscaping program, where we learned aspects from just about all the green industries. I've worked part time and summer jobs with a few landscapers doing mostly maintenance, and have done much on my own. I also did a summer internship at a public garden, and have taken extra courses in arboriculture. To make things clear, I'm looking for something that would potentially make a great long term career or even offer major benefits in a short run. I have no real personal preference on one industry over the other. I chose the green industry simply because while I am intelligent and very strong at math, I just never liked doing it and get stressed out when indoors too long. I like the green industry so far, but at the same time I'm just no passionate about it either, as working in 95 degree heat and making bottom line salary just isn't too awesome. In the long run I plan on taking night courses for another industry once I find what it is I want, but for the mean time I'm planning on making a career in what I have. I feel qualified in most of the fields.

I had arranged to meet somebody for lunch. Our conversation was constantly interrupted by the ringing of his mobile phone, and when it wasn't ringing, he was making calls. To me, it seemed he was trying to impress me with the success of his business, saying things like 'offer him one mill, George!' and so on.

He impressed me, all right. With his extraordinarily bad manners. I calmly finished my meal, stood up, thanked him for it graciously, and with a final parthian shot 'I do hope you and your phone will have a long and happy life together', I walked away.

Love it Daisy!

Best date was a guy who knew I was house sitting - called to tell me he'd bring dinner... takeout from a favorite restaurant, strawberries and champagne!

I love it too, Daisy. Oh gosh, cell phones are a pet peeve of mine. Even some of my friends have the cell phone permanently to attached their ears. It is annoying to schedule time to run around with a friend and she won't put her phone down! I could go by myself and actually have a better time.

My best date was with Robby, the ex-BIL of a friend. I had met him when he was married, and I told Teri that if Robby is ever not her BIL, to please let me know. Five years later, Robby called. We met at my house, where I had dinner waiting. And then I carried him out to the lake where we stayed for hours, chatting, walking hand in hand, and just enjoying a romantic, stress-free date. It was incredible! We dated for about a year. I refer to him as "the one that got away". LOL

Casper, why on earth did you have to carry him to the lake? LOL I prefer a man who can walk on his own two legs! Do tell us how he 'got away' - and fear not, he will probably be available again some day - do you keep in touch?
I have never had an ex I felt 'got away' - he wasn't with me because I chased him off. Are you possibly romanticizing this guy? I am just being curious, not trying to be nosy.

Sometimes you are glad that you threw them back, Casper....after I was divorced, I met up with a friend of my ex's that seemed to be a fantasy come true, as she felt the same.....when I found that she could drink a six pack of beer to my 1, it was time to throw her back...heh...I decided right then and there that I wasn't going to be finding the girl of my dreams in a bar
