The late and much loved Mary Appelhof wrote and published a book on vermicomposting specifically for teachers that you would likely find a godsend, Pat. It's called "Worms Eat OOUR Garbage", and is designed as both a "how to" for classroom worm bins as well as a k-12 curriculum guide. There are more than 30 pages of reproduceable handouts and activity sheets, and many more pages of curriculum ideas that connect vermicomposting to math, language arts, problem solving, etc., etc. You can find copies in most libraries, or purchase online at www.vermico.com or www.wormwoman.com. You might find out what her interests are, hobbies, culture etc. Is she interested in nature, decorating, traveling? Start listing some of these and you will get more than enough ideas to fill a page. Also look at the Memory scrapbooking magazine. That one has a ton of good ideas.

How did it go...or is it still going? Gardening with kids is wonderful and horrible. There are many who want to mess around, but they learn by accident anyway. Then there are those wonderful moments that are worth gold. I had a great conversation with middle school kids about products from the garden in their pizza. They'd never thought about it. Tomatoes in the sauce, what makes dough, onions, peppers, etc. Some kept guessing meat--so we named our meat as meat. Ham-pork. Sausage-pork. Hamburger-beef. Pepperoni-combination. I also learned kids will eat things they grow themselves they otherwise wouldn't consider. Keep it up! When we get to heaven we'll find out what they learned and how it changed their lives...but we have hope! Heidi
