Falling asleep at the wheel may be caused by 'sameness', no variance in your environment, coupled with a constant drone of vehicular noise. When this happens to you with no traffic around you, it is sometimes called "highway hypnosis". Some drivers get lured into this condition by the steady passing of the dashed center line. Not enough sleep/rest the night before is a factor. Low blood sugar is a possibility. I don't know any cure. I only know what works for me. it helps if I stop, and exercise a bit to increase my blood circulation - wake up the body. The exercise can be as simple as brisk walk or trot around the parking lot. If you still feel sleepy, its time to park it and catch a nap. The company I worked for (before retiring) was working on a "drowsy driver detection" system mainly for the trucking industry. They were doing research to find what to monitor to detect when a driver was about to nod off. I'm not privy to all the details, but I think a couple of items were the driver's eyelids and head tilt. It had to work without attaching anything to the driver. One hurdle was to get drivers to accept the system. Many saw it as an invasion of 'their space" and a fear that the data would be collected and used against them. This work took place several years ago, and I don't know the outcome. I have seen no announcements or advertisements.

I have the same problem, but I can't wiggle it AT ALL. I've run a small crowbar all around the space between the dishwasher and the cabinets/countertop, nothing seems to be holding it in place. I've turned the front feet so that they are actually off the floor completely by a good half inch. (flooring was installed up to the unit, so lifting it up and over the flooring is job #2.) Water line disconnected, lots of play in drain line, wires disconnected, upper two screws attaching it to the countertop removed, no glue holding it to the countertop (I saw installation), no side screws (I saw the two side screw covers, no screws coming out). At this point I'm going back to the suggestion about the tile not going all the way back, but in my case I think there might be a hole in the floor and one of the back feet is on the edge or otherwise stuck. That's all I can come up with. I'm going to try to find my crowbar, but this is looking harder and harder, especially with the flooring lip I'm going to have to contend with. NO WIGGLE OF ANY KIND even though I can run a small flat crowbar all the way around and the front feet aren't even touching the floor. It won't tilt, jiggle, move backwards or frontwards, or anything. At least I was able to find the water line and shut it off, which somehow fed into the basement and the shutoff valve was behind some insulation in the basement ceiling. I started this project by turning off the water to the house, thinking I'd be going without water for maybe two hours at the most . . .

I only go to sleep in minutes if I am VERY tired. OTOH, if I am truly EXHAUSTED, it takes longer. (Go figure.) I didn't have a problem until post-menopause. Now I have a generic for Ambien 5 mg that I will take if I can't get to sleep within an hour or can't get back to sleep if I wake before 3 a.m. (One or the other -- not two pills in one night.) I used the Ambien Monday night on the redeye home from Hawaii and got a good four hours more than my DH. Next time I'm going to add the blindfold to see if I can get even more.

Too bad that tree wasn't planted just a few feet over instead of directly in front of the main section of the house. Summer cooling should be a priority, but I think those who say keep the tree have never had a small yard and house where an out-of-scale tree dictates the entire landscape and doesn't allow any other plantings. My domineering tree is in the backyard and after 15 years, I took out all the lawn and made island beds and paths throughout. I'm steadily losing all my backyard sun and have had to move most of my blooming perennials to the front and replace with shade plants. The other problem is that that tree sucks every bit of water from my garden. I can never water enough in our dry summers. I don't know that I'd want a whole yard of just groundcover. Reminds me of when I lived in So. California and there was solid ivy or ice plant where you'd expect to see lawn. To me, that has a neglected, commercial-property appearance. But I love plants so I want an actual garden with a variety of plants. Can the honey locust be removed? That would give you sun in the front of the lawn and the grass should do better. The honey locust's roots are also in the lawn, so you've got two large trees competing for the water and nutrients with the lawn. And birches are thirsty trees.
