I do!(I don't mean more than people, of course). It's probably tied with reading. Is your interest in and love for decorating greater than your love for your other interests?

For me sailing comes first than decorating, but lately I doubt myself and I never use to... Hope this does not mean my love for it is diminishing. I have lost confidence in sailing too...I no longer go out by myself, need someone now to help dock.

Rusty is right. JD dumped many small dealers and now you have to drive for parts. They don't follow the successful Walmart program of many little profits making a huge profit. Bad move in my mind. As a part time job, I service, on average, one machine every day of the year. 90% are Sears, or MTD. I really have to do almost no repair on the bodies, mostly routine stuff on the engines. I always loved my Wheelhorse 312A, non-Toro, but when I bought a used JD316, I have to honestly say that JD has it all over my Wheelhorse. Neither one has nickeled and dimed me, but my Eaton hydro pump did fail on the Horse after about 1000 hours. That set me back $800 for the part.

>My large (dying) camellia is Marie Bracey. (japonica). When I planted it, I planted it according to the nursery instructions, which were to dig a large hole and amend the soil with half camellia/azalia soil mix and half of the existing clay. Usually my local nursery is pretty good about plants... but I know they can't possibly know about every plant. That sounds really good to me, depending on what the camellia/azalea soil mix contains. At any rate, I'd seriously doubt that your soil mix is the basic problem. If the plant hasn't been watered, that's almost surely the problem, or a large part of it. (A stressed plant is more likely to come down with extra new problems too.) We have 6 Marie Braceys (aka Spellbound) here! We kind of like that variety, I guess you might say. :D Two were large blooming plants new this winter. Three are about 7 years old and planted in far too much shade. They were very slow to get going from their original 1 or 2 gallon size but still are exceptionally healthy without any disease problems at all that I've noticed. They just began to bloom this year. And one has been planted maybe 18-20 years and is quite large and bushy, even though it is not ideally sited (less than ideal amounts of sunlight and competing with too many tree roots for moisture). This long-planted large camellia has survived all droughts without enough water, while some azaleas and rhododendrons right next to it died from the lack of water. So Marie Bracey can for sure send its roots pretty deeply to make it through less than ideal rainfall/watering, but I'd guess that to have that happen takes either some luck with when heavy rain finally does fall--just in time--or a good watering strategy for encouraging deep roots. Just in time heavy rainfall is what must have happened here over several successive rainfalls. You can make use of a similar strategy with your own watering scheme by giving it successively slightly longer time spans between watering and making sure to water very deeply when you do water, so that as the water level falls, the roots are encouraged to grow deeper and deeper to get the moisture that's there. Yours didn't quite get either kind of treatment, so its roots weren't deep into the soil and prepared for the long drought you accidentally gave it. It's likely a protective measure that your Marie Bracey has gone through recently to stop sending its scarce moisture to all branches, but just sending necessary moisture to some branches in an effort to keep some parts of the plant alive--a better thing than having the whole thing die at once. You might look at it this way... The plant succeeded in what it was trying to do if any branches at all are still alive now. Hurrah! Just trim off those branches that died, and water the plant regularly and very well for a very long while to give it a chance to regain its strength, send out more roots, and look like a robust, leafy, healthy plant again. Eventually it would be a good idea to try the less-frequent deep watering strategy, though. Maybe wait until next spring or even the following spring to do that, depending on how long it takes for a full recovery? When you do get around to trying this, the roots will grow deeper looking for moisture and it ought to be better prepared to get through the summer heat with enough moisture to have a good bud set then. (It's amazingly how much better the bud set is when a camellia gets plenty of moisture when it is trying to set buds!) Marie Bracey is an old variety that has stood the test of time. We've never had any problems of any kind with ours, and they have been mostly completely neglected. Once yours gets back to adequate moisture, it ought to recover unless it's really too far gone. Only time will tell on that, but it's such a healthy variety overall it's certainly worth giving it every chance now. >I'm sure I need to do something to amend the ph some... I wonder if it would be better if it was planted a bit higher, in a berm or something. The other smaller camellia (Kramers Supreme Camellia) is near a drain, so I think it gets pretty good drainage there (and it's doing better than it's larger friend) Berms are great, and they look wonderful too, adding a three-dimensional effect. For future landscape planning, that's a great strategy, and makes your yard much more interesting to look at. I wouldn't rush to do anything about PH without getting a soil test done first, now that you know you've gotten a problem from the lack of water. Your PH might well need a little adjusting, but since you don't have other camellias dying in the same soil, there seems to be no big rush on perfecting PH. >Should I wait to see if the camellia recovers? Well, you know the old saying: "Don't fix what ain't broke!" Yes, wait! Just water. Don't fertilize. Don't spray anything near the plant, don't do anything except giving it water. If you have an easy way to provide a bit more dappled shade to some of the plant--a potted tree on its south side perhaps?--that wouldn't hurt either. If it were my plant, I'd give it until next March or April to show good signs of recovery before yanking it, unless its position is so prominent in your yard that you need that spot to look good again really soon. You might eventually decide to relocate the plant or to raise it some within the planting hole--or decide not to. Just make sure that the plant has recovered first before giving it any new stresses to have to weather; it has lost some or potentially most of its roots now to the lack of water and recovery is going to take a good bit of time. >what would IDEAL planting situation be? (ie what kind of soil amendments?) I don't really know the answer to that, and I'm not sure anyone does. So much depends on what kind of soil you are dealing with to begin with. Your county extension agent might have an idea about that for your area. (Or not. It might depend on what kind of plants he/she knows best?) It also depends on what components you have available in your area for a reasonable price, and what suits you. There is no single formula that is necessary for success. The general keys pointing toward the potential for good results with camellias, I think, are the combination's overall ability to drain reasonably well while holding a reasonable amount of moisture that still does have some aeration, the combination's overall acidity, and its overall proportion of organic materials (improves the chances for the first three, plus makes for lots of benefical soil microorganisms). If you are curious as to what we do here, well... We buy a truckload of sandy loam soil here every now and then so we usually have that available to use for amending our hard clay into something more crumbly but that will still hold itself into a clump if you squeeze on it. We use a fair amount of sandy loam in a clay mixture that is heavy on organics. We also have composted leaves in abundance to use and we use them abundantly. And at times we get free delivered hardwood mulching materials, so we mix in a fair amount of that too. Sometimes pine needles and pine bark. Plus we scoop lots of fresh hardwood leaves into the mix (helps to hold the soil in place for heavy rains, including on our berms). And usually we add some cottonseed meal and sphagnum peat moss too. Often we push in some leafy twigs as a final step after the camellia is planted to help hold the soil and those break down very gradually and nicely. We don't throw in the kitchen sink, but almost. ;) We use some cow poo, alfalfa, and bonemeal with the roses, but not with camellias. If you want to use manure or very much bonemeal with camellias, be sure to do things to adjust the PH downward some because very much of that will likely raise the PH to something that's too high. We also have some greensand, but haven't gotten around to using that except on the roses (and not much there either). You might well have good luck with fewer organics than we use, but we've had good luck with what we do and are likely to keep doing it. We never use commercial fertilizers of any kind anywhere in a planting hole or after a plant is planted. (Nor do we spray any inorganic chemicals of any kind. Camellias don't need themit to thrive and they all usually look somewhere between fabulously healthy to pretty good overall, even if they are not absolutely perfectly disease-free.) For fertilizing after planting, we use cottonseed meal, along with hardwood mulching and leaves that keep getting new layers added on top each year as the old layer decomposes. We also have two Kramer's Supremes, another old favorite variety. One is a well-established plant (planted at the same time as the oldest Marie Bracey and far too close to a tree) that has never had any problems at all, but hasn't bloomed well until this spring--when it went wild! And was wildly beautiful! (Last summer it had lots of rainfall when trying to make buds.) This variety grows more upright than Marie Bracey does but is also a very beautiful plant. It gets huge pretty quickly. We also bought one more (large, 7-gallon) Kramer's Supreme last winter and it's sited in a much better spot, with adequate sunlight and no tree root competition. I can't wait to see what it looks like in future years there. You are going to like this variety too. I always hope for fragrance and it does have a bit, but it's fairly faint. With as many camellias as you already do have growing successfully, you have more experience with camellias than I was assuming when writing earlier. I'd guess that you weren't even close to giving up on camellias, and probably thought my post a bit funny! Anyway, consider yourself REALLY encouraged now! :D Fingers crossed here that your Marie Bracey makes it. It's easy to see why it's also called "Spellbound" as its blooms are so breathtakingly beautiful. But if this one is too far gone, don't hestitate to replace it with another of the same variety. It was drooping so I started adding watering on one side of the yard as an experiment. Then the others on the other side of the yard started yellowing. I'm throwing up my hands. Once every 2 weeks huh?? I'll quit doing it then, the sprinklers don't reach them on the side yard. I was going to put some Vigoro plant fert on them too to see if that would give them a pick me up. That is a really dark red. I caught it with half shade and half sun to show what it looks like. That's me making the shade with a box lid. In order to photo the plants in full sun round the clock I have to cheat:) Else the sun washes them out, my camera is old. I try hard for accuracy on pics. I do get a kick out of the lighter colored ones if I get close enough and tilt the camera right you can catch them shimmering in the light naturally, never knew that:) I have one last daylily to bloom it did it on the day it was 105, I never went out and saw it, I saw the spent blooms the day after. Waiting for more. No idea what color it'll be, LOL* Kind of like your hollhocks. I loved your last pic, hoping for more of them too! That was a fantastic pic of it too.

What the researchers learned is that the plants roots intertwined (of course) and plants short on P or N will take it from a plants roots that has an over supply. Trees, shrubs even weeds count toward the total of 7. Mycorrhizae will populate certain plants and bring P to the that plant in a symbiotic way then other plants near by benefit from P being near that plant. Below is a long read that may be interesting to those who care about the soil their expensive plants grow in. Hosta collectors are obsessive compulsive given to fits of unreasonable euphoria and unjustified depression which is why Daylily collectors make fun of us. Become as compulsive about the soil as the hosta and you wont have to suffer from fits of anxiety when the sun goes down. It is not hard to enoculate your soil with Mycorrhizae, get a bit of forest Mycorrhizae By Shawn Semones, Ph.D., and Kristi Woods, M.S. Arborists leave behind perhaps the most visible examples of their work Â trees. Whether they have been charged with simply caring for existing specimens or asked to plant and grow new trees, everyone who comes in contact with their work experiences their success, or failure, and is quick to make judgments on whether or not theyÂre "doing a good job." Improving the odds of growing and maintaining healthy trees requires selecting the appropriate plants and ensuring that the trees themselves are rooted in the best foundation possible. ThatÂs where tiny allies can make a huge difference. Those tiny allies are mycorrhizal fungi. Mycorrhizae are fungi that form symbiotic and mutually beneficial associations in plants (usually with the roots). They help increase establishment and growth, extend the rootsÂ surface area, and provide resistance against stress. The presence of mycorrhizae results in a healthier plant. Benefits Typically, both the plants and mycorrhizal fungi benefit from their association with each other. This functional give-and-take relationship provides a carbohydrate source for the mycorrhizal fungi, which is what they need to flourish. The plant, in turn, benefits from improved nutrient and water uptake, carbon acquisition, phytohormone production, and resistance to pathogens. Relationships Mycorrhizae actually alter the relationship between the treeÂs roots and the soil, increasing the rootsÂ ability to absorb phosphorus, a critical nutrient for plant growth and stress physiology. Mycorrhizae are an integral part of plant physiology and ecology. Mycorrhizae form an association with more than 2,500 different plant species, ranging from primitive plants to more evolutionarily advanced species. The nature of the association depends upon the species of plant and fungus involved as well as the environmental conditions. Forming in 98 percent of all land plants, mycorrhizae are found in a variety of ecosystems and plant communities, including wetlands, deserts, deciduous forests, lowland tropical rainforests, high latitude and elevation plant communities, and prairies. About the only terrestrial settings in which they do not occur are extreme arctic environments. Classifications Although mycorrhizae are classified into seven major groups characterized by key morphological features of the root-fungus association, the two most common groups are ectomycorrhizae (colonize outside) and endomycorrhizae (colonize inside). Ectomycorrhizae colonize the outside ofroots and can produce a mushroom or fruiting body above or below ground. Ectomycorrhizae form associations with trees such as pines, birch, oak, walnut, willow and beech. Ectomycorrhizae create a sheath of hyphae (fungal cells), increasing the root surface and volume around the plant root and making it harder for fungal or bacterial diseases to penetrate the plant. With this barrier in place, the plant is less likely to need constant and potentially costly pesticide applications, thereby possibly reducing pesticide use. In addition, plants are more resistant to diseases, both fungal and bacterial, and a variety of pests that seek out less-healthy specimens. Although ectomycorrhizae only form with 10 percent of the worldÂs plants, these plants, primarily trees, are the basis for some of the worldÂs most important industries, including building and construction, furniture manufacturing, and landscaping. On the other hand, arbuscular mycorrhizae, or endomycorrhizae, colonize inside the root. An endomycorrhizal association is characterized by two structures: vesicles and arbuscules. Vesicles are used for the storage of carbon. Arbuscules are where the nutrient exchange between the fungus and plant actually takes place. Endomycorrhizae form beneficial partnerships with 70% of all plant families, including flowering plants, annuals, grasses, and select trees such as maple, magnolia and dogwoods. Endomycorrhizae are critical to plants commonly used in landscaping. Increasing the Odds There are several commercially available endo and ecto mycorrhizal inoculants. These inoculants come in various forms, including dry soluble powders, granular pills, tablets and pre-inoculated soil media. Plants can be inoculated via numerous methods such as soil drenching, liquid injections, granular incorporation and vertical mulching. Applying a mycorrhizal product to established or newly transplanted plants can result in a wide range of benefits to the plantÂs health, such as increased nutrient uptake, increased resistance to insect pests and diseases, reduced fertilizer use, increased accumulation of phosphorus, and increased transplant survival. So whether itÂs a giant oak guarding a tricky approach shot on a golf course, a beautiful maple shading a jogging path at a local park, or a showpiece ornamental attracting the attention of a passerby, these tiny mycorrhizal allies can perform a mighty function Â making the trees look good, and making their caretakers look good as well. Increased Nutrient Uptake After the mycorrhizae colonize the roots of a plant, the fungus then grows throughout the surrounding soil and forms an extensive cobweb-like network that explores a larger soil volume than normal roots. These special fungi can increase the ability of the roots to access nutrients in narrow spaces (small areas between soil particles) because they are smaller (1/10 the diameter) compared to roots. The ability of mycorrhizae to enter small areas can increase root absorption of nutrients by sixtyfold in some cases. Some research has even suggested that plants grown near each other are linked by the same mycorrhizae, which can transfer nutrients between the plants. There is also evidence that mycorrhizal roots live longer than plant roots not colonized by mycorrhizae. This increases the total absorbing capacity of the root over its lifetime. Without question, plant health in low nutrient sites is improved by the presence of mycorrhizae. Increased Resistance To Insect Pests And Diseases Ectomycorrhizae form a physical barrier around the plant root, making it harder for fungal or bacterial diseases to penetrate and harm the plant. If overall plant health is increased, the plant is less likely to succumb to diseases (fungal or bacterial) and pests. A dense layer of mycorrhizal cells usually covers ectomycorrhizal roots and effectively increases the surface area of the root. Ectomycorrhizae also have antibiotic properties, which can reduce the ability of a harmful fungal disease to attack a plant. Reduced Fertilizer Use Trees and plants with a flourishing mycorrhizal colony are significantly more effective at extracting nutrients from the soil. That increased efficiency means less frequent and less heavy applications of fertilizers, resulting in savings of both money and time. Mycorrhizae provide faster movement of phosphorus to the roots by changing the root zone, thereby making the roots more able to accept phosphorus and decreasing the amount of phosphorus needed in order for it to diffuse into the root cells. Essentially, mycorrhizae mobilize phosphorus in the soil that was previously unavailable. By stimulating growth, phosphorus helps promote flowering and the maturing of fruit. With the enhanced nutrient uptake, mycorrhizae encourage flowers to grow more quickly and efficiently, extending the growing season or providing fruiting trees with earlier yields. An increased growth rate of the root and shoot means plants grow larger, with healthier root zones. Increased Transplant Survival Plants that are colonized by ectomycorrhizae produce larger, more extensive root systems. This highly developed root system greatly reduces drought stress on the plant since it absorbs moisture more effectively. Inoculated plants also produce new root structures called "short roots." The increased surface area provided by the ectomycorrhizae and the improved root system of inoculated plants can result in an increase in total root surface area up to 18 times that of an uninoculated plant. Interior decorating has always been my passion, and we moved often during my 38 year marriage, but I must say I pretty much have everything I want now,
and I have thrown myself more in clothing and accessories, as far as my purchases go.

But I can never resist an interesting home store or magazine, I love the eye candy, and these forums still have an appeal for me. So I guess I'd have to say yes to your question.

I will probably move one more time when DH retires, and that could be pretty much my last decorating project and I'm actually looking forward to it.

Not only decorating but house design, room design, and all things "house and home". It's always been one of my important interests even from childhood. I can remember the house plan of a relative's home that I visited only once when I was 3 years old. My DM and I were discussing it when I was a young adult and she was amazed at my recollection of that house.

I can 'get lost' looking at pictures of houses/interior decor, or looking at or drawing house plans and sometimes have to remind myself I have a life and other things to do! LOL

No. I enjoy it greatly along with a love of antiques - especially the hunt, but I have other "loves" as well. Some that I love more than decorating LOL. It's right up there near the top though!!

These days, I think I like reading about decor and talking about decorating more than the actual act of decorating, maybe because my furnishings are pretty much set or maybe because my budget is quite limited. I still get excited when I stumble across a good buy on a vintage item that fits with my collections, but other than a daily scan of eBay, I'm not actively looking for anything. Thank goodness that I can visit GW and enjoy the decorating process vicariously through the various posts.

I'm with LuAnn, it's in the top 10, but not up there. I've been interested in houses and decorating since I was a teen, thanks to my extremely talented mom.

When I was a teenager I'd find "Open House" signs and go in the houses for sale and I'd tell the realtor I was looking at houses for my mother. LOL.

I guess it's in my blood, but I didn't inherit the talent my mom was born with. :(

I'm such a novice. I wouldn't describe anything I've done around my house as "decorating," as that term would be too lofty. But I am fascinated by why some things work and why others don't. I make a study of it, as I work around my house, look at pictures, and read threads here. So, it's really *learning* about decorating that I enjoy, if that makes sense.

Yes, but with reservations. I don't like decorating without money, not tons, but enough iykwim, and I don't like (ever) to watch tv shows about decorating. After awhile, I have magazine burnout too.
But, I LOVE isolating a problem and setting to work on it. Recently, I decided new pillows for the kitchen barstools would update the entire house. So, I am on a quest to find the best look for that area. Etsy has supplied several possibilities and fabric samples are in the mail.

Flipping through a years worth of House Beautiful one evening helped me realize what pattern/color/size pattern of pillow from etsy would look best. (ikat in cobalt and white, btw)
Which one to choose? or, should I buy the fabric and have a local excellent seamstress make them for me? It would save $$ but be a hassle. She sews a knife edge pillow for me for $4.00. She can make anything that looks store bought- she's magnificent. (but not business savvy)

When that is done, I will focus on the next project, already brewing on the edges of my concentration.

stinky, you underestimate yourself! I think your decorating (your living room is what I've seen pictures of) is lovely!
It's definitely decorated.

I think what I meant was do you love everything to do with decorating- doing it, reading about it, looking at it, everything. I enjoy looking at "regular" people's decorating more than fancy pictures in magazines.

Two other things about my love of it- one of my earliest memories (age 2 or 3?) is looking at and loving the fabric on someone's sofa. I remember what the fabric looked like (or at least I think I do). The other thing is that when I am going to get to see someone's house for the first time I am ridiculously excited about seeing their decorating!

Nance, thanks! Btw, I don't recall ever seeing posts of YOUR rooms! Have you let us into your decorating world? Show us your style!

I also say I don't "cook," I prepare meals (daily!) and the food is hot usually, so technically it is cooked. If I say I cook then an evaluation that I'm not a good cook may follow. Better to just say I've prepared food. I call my husband for "dinner" by saying, "The food is ready!" I can't call it "dinner" with a straight face.

So I arrange things around the house. Guess it IS decorating, but again, it could be bad decorating if I admit that, yes?

I have no problem though, coming right out and saying that I'm
a stinky-gardener!

stinky, my decorating isn't exceptional in any way! I have light colored tile floors throughout and have persian rugs (not matching :) in dark blue. Lots of my furniture is beige or brown. I have lots of real plants and a silk ficus in my dining room. I don't have any original art, unfortunately. Everything looks pretty traditional.

I am getting an iphone so maybe I can learn to post pictures from that. I don't know though- I might feel awful if people didn't like what I had done! or thought it was boring (it probably is).!

I would like to see pics of your house too. Don't worry about other people not liking it, some will, some won't, But the question is, do you? And even if you don't, that's OK too.

We don't all love our homes, some of it is money, some time, some, not knowing what to do or how to do it.
Our value as a person is not tied to how big, nice or well decorated our home is - or, how many people like it.

No. It probably is in my top twenty near the bottom. (If I had to choose between decorating and other hobbies, it would be low on the list.)

It is a convenient and easy time killer to look at photos/these threads/etc. (eg, I'd rather be hiking, but it's 100f!) I also like to find inspiration and ideas as I make each space in my home comfortable, functional and pleasing to us. So, that's why I'm here. :)

Nance, your house sounds very attractive, warm and inviting! "Exceptional" decorating isn't necessarily the most interesting, comforting or pleasing. I also agree with Bumblebeez; I can't guarantee you that ALL the people here would love your decor, but I'd be willing to wager that many would. I doubt anyone's house or decorating is embraced by everyone!

You're such a friendly, good natured people person, Nance. I bet your house reflects that! What could be better?

Besides people :) golf is #1, followed by drinks and a dinner of appetizers (whoever invented tapas is my best friend!) with friends, then reading. Decorating is just a means to an end, albeit a pleasing end (I hope). I don't like looking for furnishings but do like identifying what I want (through GW or on-line pics). Making the rounds of store after store is pure drudgery to me.

No. It's an interest. Many things are higher on my priority list but I like to see what peeps (you all) are doing with their decor. Makes me look at things differently and identify what I like and don't like.

I used to love decorating. However, I have lived in this house for eleven years (the longest I have lived anywhere) and I have gotten stagnant. I know we will eventually sell to down size so it is not worth starting over like I would prefer. I'm not sure on the style of my next house so I do not want to purchase any big ticket items. I mostly buy inexpensive CL finds to stave off the boredom of my decor. The last time I had fun with decorating was a few months ago on my sons town house. Between CL, garage sales, ebay and me doing the paintings and painting I managed a real hip pad on the most extreme budget. I had so much fun finding deals on nice bathroom tile and you name it plus doing a lot of the labor. I LOVE doing things like that because it's the ultimate challenge. As much as I always think I could have the most beautiful decor if I had the money to match my tastes...what I'm really good at is working with a penny and pulling a look out of it.

I adore houses...decorating, design, architecture, and lately landscape design. Like a pp, I get so excited to be invited to a new friend's home...I love to see floor plan and decorative accents. I am fascinated with all of my friend's renovation projects...one of my friend's said I knew more about her addition than she did. I am currently a SAHM, but have no desire to return to the field I previously worked in (and have a master's degree in) because I want to do something with houses!

No, don't love it and it's not even in my top 10. Gardening, reading, sports, hiking, and some other things light my fire. Decorating is not way up there. But I do enjoy it mildly when it's time to decorate a room and I like for my decor to stay current and fresh. As someone said...maybe it's going on the 'hunt' for something new. I'd rather be involved in the program management part and make sure things are done properly and on schedule.

Yes, decorating/landscaping have always been my passion through 50 years of marriage and many different styles, and homes,now have the perfect home and everything I want and my obsession now are my Pc's (5) and my E-reader, have always been a reader, but now I am also a writer, my novel is online for E-readers, free of course.I appreciate just reading the reviews, and I am now writing a sequel.

Yes, I'd say decorating and anything related to making a house look prettier are my first loves! Well, okay, I put my family first. But sometimes they have to wait while I just move that chair over a few inches...

This is one reason why I enjoy this forum so much. Most (maybe all) of my "real life" friends do not share my passion.

Years ago I read somewhere that women will turn to decorating their houses when they are tired of "decorating" themselves i.e.: clothes, makeup, jewelry etc.

I can relate to that. I'm just not in to all that frou frou, time consuming make me beautiful stuff!!! But I love my garden and redoing furniture and rearranging my house. I'm fine with the way I look and only get all done up when I feel like it and don't bother with it the rest of the time. No I'm not a slob and I can still look very presentable everyday with very little effort :)

I'm a bit relieved to see so many comments about how others don't love it or even place it in their top 10 or 20. I don't love it and it makes me wonder why I spend so much time here. I have learned so many interesting things, and sometimes I'm actually helpful to others, because of what I read here, but I don't put much into practice in my house.

After God, family, and friends....then comes decorating, especially since they have just staked out my new house....so my mind is swirling with decorating ideas.

I went to pick out and order my new furniture...and it turned out that I picked out the same colors for my LR that I had in my old house....so I guess I must have liked it...or I am stuck in a rut!

I spend way too much time looking at forums on this site, but I get so many good ideas from the talented people who post here~

Yes. It's beginning to consume me lately. As of next week we'll be done with the entire first floor of our home, well the remodel will be done but I'll still have to decorate a little. I'm hoping I can focus on life instead starting this fall! We will be remodeling upstairs next year, but it's pretty straight forward (paint and carpet) except the two bathrooms will be more intense. At least they are small rooms. I made the decision after this remodel I will not do any more home improvement projects until next year. I'm excited that the bones of the house will be there as we've remodeled. Now, I can just focus on the fun stuff, decorating. I've never done much for holidays because I always felt our money was better spent elsewhere. This holiday season will be so different.

This question really challenged me to think. My active and passionate affair with interior design has followed an arc that is on its downward side now. Part of that is the natural progression of age, and the attendant changes in the urge to nest, to build, and to accumulate that go with it.

I'm not physically as strong as I used to be, and I have fairly significant arthritis in my hands, so I can't do the things involving hand work, either great dexterity or strength, that I used to do. No more serious gardening, no furniture refinishing, or schlepping little tables and bolts of fabric and sample books all over the place, and very little hand sewing.

So most of my project energy goes into cooking these days, although I still give advice to friends and acquaintances who ask.

One reason I enjoy participating in this forum so much is that, since I'm not in the trade any more, I miss the conversations and the problem solving. And if what I have learned, and whatever native ability I have, can still be of use, I want to exercise it.

Because design for living is, at its heart, a problem-solving discipline. And as many of you have said in lots of other posts (and Bumblebeez said here), good problem solving begins with accurate problem identification. If you don't know what's broken...well, you understand.
And loving to get your teeth in a problem that you actually can understand is a virus that never goes away.

bronwynsmom, I think we might be in the same "boat"...my body full of arthritis and replacements, just does not have the strength to do what in my mind, I would love to do. Refinishing furniture and sewing from bolts of materials are out..and so is the handiwork.....so these forums and putting colors and ideas together is my way of spending lonely times after DH passed away. I feel these
wonderful people on these sites, are my "friends" and so I guess that is why decorating etc. is a passion of mine.

Yes! I have always had a passion for decorating interiors along with landscape design and gardening since at a very early age. ....like some people do sudoko puzzles, I could easily grab graph paper and entertain myself working on floor plans or outdoor areas...sigh....I always loved reading decorating magazines, but it seems the quality of shelter magazine articles has been slipping a lot in recent years - I still get excited a bit, but then get kinda let down every time. Maybe it's just me. I sense a good thread possibility. Interesting post!

I love love love decorating and mostly putting a space together. I was lucky enough to have jobs and my own business and consulting in many homes so I got to see how real people live (as opposed to magazine shoots). The best time I ever had was learning ID and studying in college, each course was like 'pinch myself, I am really here' type of experience. I got to work with designers and very creative people.
Yes, I LOVE decorating and Interior Design. And have loved placement of things since I could walk (was told that at 3 I was rearranging things to look as I called it 'neat'!

Yes, I love it, along with woodworking, furniture making,
stained glass, upholstery, making drapes, gardening,
everything really...but they all go hand and hand with
the art of creative living, don't they? Lucky for me,
my main man loves everything I love too, so we enjoy doing it
together.
Oh, we love cooking together too...
