Skirt with a border - how?

Hi Folks

I bought some needlecord with a fabulous embroidered border, thinking I'd be able to make trousers or a skirt. My preferred skirt pattern is gored, 3 panels front and back and is very flattering and comfortable to wear, but I forgot that the hemline of each panel is curved, this wouldn't work with this straight border. (see link, Simplicity 5914, the long slim version)

The fabric is a pale teal/dark duck egg blue colour.

So now what?

I have 2 separate panels. The border is 8" high and 50" wide. I have 1.5" below for a hem and there is space either side so total fabric width is 58". Above each panel there is 46" of plain corduroy.

Although the repeat is 6" it's staggered over the various parts of the design so any cut or seam isn't going to match up perfectly.

I was wondering about inserting a plain fabric godet in the back for extra walking room. Also about sewing huge darts (with the excess cut away) to mimic the appearance of the gored skirt, but... that might make the bottom stick out rather than drape.

All suggestions welcome.

To me, the best pattern to use with a border print is something very simple - just 2 side seams. I'd use a different pattern for the border fabric and make the cute Simplicity skirt out of something else.

4236 has a view designed for border prints. Any one of these should allow you to take advantage of your lovely border. I think 4233 would work well with your corduroy.

As specialized as the GardenWeb forums are, there is another place on the Web that has an even more narrowly focused forum just for toilets, and it is an invaluable resource. Under a different moniker there than the monicker that I use here, a couple of weeks ago I posted a description -- including a photo -- of our set-up where, yes, the Inax Clessence advanced toilet seat is mounted on our Toto Vespin II. See the link below. In the same post I linked to a separate posting that I had made in the Terry Love forum in which I had reviewed the early (1979-1982) rivalry between Inax and Toto when advanced toilet seats first were introduced to the Japanese market, and the humorous competing television campaigns. Terry Love edited that earlier post by embedding the videos that I had only linked to, and you may get a kick out of watching them. (I also explained there how the Toto and Inax design philosophies diverge.) We have not installed any Inax toilets here yet, but the toilet in the bathroom adjacent to our bedroom dates from the very early days of the 1.6 gpf era, and the flushing mechanics were still not fully sorted out in those days. (That is, it very often requires more than a single flush to finish the job.) We expect to replace the toilet soon with a dual flush ADA height toilet and -- if we were doing it today -- the Inax Rio Grande would be our top choice. Bisteces Rancheros Flank or Shoulder Steaks Braised with Tomatoes, Potatoes & Poblano Peppers From "All About Braising" by Molly Stevens serves 4 to 6 2 mdm poblanos (about 8 oz) 2 lbs Flank steaks Or thin-cut chuck or shoulder Coarse salt and pepper 4 tbsp olive oil 2 mdm white onions 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tbsp cumin seeds, toasted/ground 1 tbsp coriander seeds, toasted/grounds 28 oz can whole peeled tomatoes, with juice 1 lb small red or white potatoes 2 tbsp red wine vinegar Heat oven to 325 degrees Roast peppers - directly on gas burner until charred, about 8 minutes) Transfer to a mdm bowl, cover. Peel peppers - When peppers are cool enough, slip off the charred skin with your fingers. Slice the peeled peppers open, cut away stems, remove seeds. Cut into 1/4" strips. Set aside. Prep steaks - Lay steak flat on a large cutting surface. With a large knife, cut the steak crosswise into 8 to 10 thin slices, holding the knife at a very steep angle so you are cutting more horizontally than downward. The steaks should be about 1/4" thick, 3" wide, and a long as the flank steak was wide (about 6 inches). Brown steaks - Season the steaks with salt and pepper. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large skillet over mdm high heat until it shimmers. Add 1/2 the steaks and cook, turning once with tongs, until they develop a ruddy brown exterior, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer the steaks to a large cazuela or shallow, 3 quart, baking dish. Brown the second batch. Add another tablespoon of oil to the pan before adding the steaks. Remove browned steaks to the shallow baking dish Aromatics and braising liquid - When the steaks are browned, pour oil out of the pan. If the skillet is blackened, clean before continuing, but if there is just a chocolate-brown crust of drippings, continue with the skillet as is. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil and heat over mdm-high heat. Add onions, season with salt and pepper, stir and saute until limp and beginning to brown in spots, about 6 minutes. Add the garlic, cumin, and coriander and cook for another minute. Pour juice from tomato can into the skillet. Then break up whole tomatoes with your hands and drop them into the skillet. Season with salt and pepper, stir and simmer the juices to thicken them a bit, about 4 minutes. Taste for salt and pepper and remove from the heat. Braise - Slice the potatoes into 1/8" thick rounds, and layer them over the steaks. Stir the vinegar into the tomato sauce and spoon it over the potatoes. Top with the strips of peppers. Cover the dish tightly with heavy-duty foil and slice it onto the middle oven rack. Braise until steaks and potatoes are fork-tender, but not falling apart, about 1 hour. The finish - Remove the foil, increase oven temp to 375 degrees, and braise until tomato sauce is brown and crusty around the edges, another 20 to 25 minutes. In order to install mobile home skirting, you need to use the top moldings and the bottom track, which needs a base on which to be installed. Without those the skirting will look unfinished and the bottom will flap and move in wind. Something like the following railings adapted to below the porch would look much better. railings

@SJ McCarthy I appreciate your response however... Stringers are actually on the outside of a stairwell that is open on one end. My stairs are sandwiched - that is not open on either end - between walls so the sides are called skirt boards. It isn’t a matter of semantics given location matters. I would encourage you to re-read my original post as you have made some very inaccurate assumptions, heavily deviated from the intent of my original post, exaggerated the work required, and have also not directly addressed my questions. Namely: 1. This project was cosmetic meaning there were no structural alterations. It seems you may be unfamiliar with how the lip of existing stair treads that remain in-place are adjusted to receive hardwood treads and risers right atop to preserve the minimal costmetic nature of the “renovation“. Regardless, references to code are therefore entirely irrelevant. This is a quality/ craftsmanship issue from an aesthetic perspective! 2. I get that the average homeowner may not be the most informed, although NOT everyone is so “green” to pay upfront giving a contractor no incentive to do the job in which they were hired to complete. 3. Similarly, one shouldn’t assume that the ‘big boys’ always perform as they are contracted. Unfortunately, in my case, Class A contractors who are insured and bonded with decades of experience aren’t immune to performing subpar work nor subcontracting out to those who perform subpar work. Thankfully, I had hours of video footage to substantiate what was/was not done! With all of this said, I am seeking insight into how this - filling shallow holes/depressions should be flushed out with skirt boards - NOT who should be hired to do the work. If you cannot answer, that is fine although I would appreciate responses to my actual questions. Note: 1. It is NOT necessary to replace skirt boards therefore all of the extra mentioned is beyond overkill, and, quite frankly, off topic. 2. This inquiry is limited to flushing out depressions and filling in boundaries between wood plugs and skirt boards.

I agree, you ABOLUTELY MUST have a straight line for the hem to take advantage. have you considered a wrap skirt with darts? or a skirt that has a yoke to fit along the hips and waist but soft gathers to give you more fabric at the hem. these can be lovely if the fabric is soft.

Did you look at Simplicity 7015? It has the same line as your skirt without the flare, shows a view with a border print fabric, and does recommend using corduroy. I think the front is a fake flap.

I love your fabric. If you have enough left over, you might want to think of a straight vest with the border for the bottom hem or swing the border vertical and add as a panel.

Joanns is having their Simplicity $1.99 pattern sale again next week (check site for store sales flyer, believe it begins this coming Sunday).

Hee, hee - no Joann's in Scotland. We've just finished a half price McCalls sale and a New Look all Â£3.50 sale. I'm waiting for the half price Vogue sale, which is usually the month of July.

I didn't like the shorter gathered skrts somebody recommended, they look pretty on the model, but she is tall and skinny and I'm not. I'm not particulary overweight, just a bit dumpy and I've got wee short legs, so yoked gathered styles are not me.

I quite like the wrap skirt, would be something of an experiment, I'm not sure I could walk in it, but I suppose it's worth a try.

The pattern doesn't mention corduroy - mainly because all the skirts are cut Crosswise, on the assumption that border fabrics are usually down the selvedge. The trouble I'm having and the fact that the shop still has this fabric left, proves that having it vertically in panels isn't such a hot idea.

I think I've got a wrap pattern somewhere in my collections, I'll dig it out and have a look.

So, does the border go parallel to the wale of the corduroy, instead of perpendicular? No wonder they couldn't sell it! If that's the case, maybe you could make the wrap skirt (or mock wrap) and use the border along the opening. Then you could make a vest or jacket and use the border on the openings there, too.

I'm explaining myself badly - sorry!

The border is perpendicular to the wales of the cord. If it was the other way it would go against the smooth nap of the cord.

Usually border fabrics are along the selvedge, so you can buy the length you need to lay your pattern pieces on crosswise. I've never seen panels with a single border on the lower edge before.

Still thinking about the idea of a wrap skirt.

Sew much sewing, sew little time ;-)
