how do you decorate a lamp shade?

This is probably a dumb question, but I'd like to decorate a lamp shade for my girls' room and want to make sure I do it right. I was thinking of spray mounting some fabric on the shade and then also glueing on some pom-pom fringe or something. Is this feasible? Do I need to use special adhesive (non-flamable?). I see cool lamp shades all the time that people have made, I'm just unsure how to do it (and be safe at the same time!)

Any pics or advice would be great - thank you! :)

I buy the "tacky" lamp shades from Joann Fabrics (use the 40%off coupon :^) It comes with a pattern to cut your fabric and then just stick it on leaving a little top and bottom to turn under and glue. I use Elmer's glue and clothespins to put trim on top and bottom of the shade...propping it on a 2 ltr. soda bottle to work and dry. If you want to use an existing shade and spray glue to adhere fabric, email me at "my page" and I will tell you how to make the pattern. HTH

Here's how to read the truth behind the seed package labels and nursery descriptions: Full sun -- Don't bother unless you have unobstructed southern exposure from horizon to horizon or you have enough HID lights to illuminate a small city. Sun to part shade -- these really like full sun, but you just may see a couple of blooms if you don't put it in full sun conditions (see above), if it's a good year, El Nino conditions are favorable, and you get lucky. Real lucky. Part shade: this is what everybody north of the Mason-Dixon line actually has, even when it's sunny, compared to all those sun-drenched industrial nurseries in Homestead, Fl, where the plants actually come from. Expect plants to look a lot less vibrant than they do in the pictures. Full shade: this means under a light tree canopy, not your linen closet. And now for the real advice: your best bets are probably the nicotiana, peruvian daylilly, and pansies, I think -- many of the rest really need a lot of sun to look and smell their best. Jim

How do you decorate your dormers?

Do you need storage? I can see a chest with drawers sitting in your dormer with a green plant in front of the window. If your dormer is wider, would it accommodate a small easy chair with floor lamp as a reading area. The dormers I have seen either have a window seat or built in chests with drawers. I guess you could put book shelves across the space also. Not sure I would put shelves on the side walls.

They are all Murano, or Barsovier e Toso (if I am spelling that correctly),--Italian, in other words, probably 1950s or 60s. If you look on eBay, you will sometimes find a single, a base with no lamp parts, an American glass like Blenko or a Blenko knock off at reasonable prices. 1st dibs is for the high budget buyer. I have a pair of lamps that I found one at a time that are regularly listed on 1stDibs at $3500-5000 a pair. (I paid under $200)

One of the tricky things about shades is that often the shade is the high ticket item of the lamp and shade pair. This is true even when they are new, but if bought together, the assumption is the base cost a lot more than the shade. It becomes particularly painful when trying to replace an old shade. I just replaced shades for a client that the cheapest I could find that was appropriate was $150 x 2 (delivered, they are also expensive to ship). The lamp bases were dirty and needed to be rewired so they were a relative bargain but the "total lamp" still ended up to be $200+ each, most of the money in the shade.

I've used the spray adhesive and put fabric over an existing plain white lamp shade. then I trimmed it in bias tape. It was left over toile from a yard sample I bought. I also made apillow out of it.

Another project I did was to hand-bead a fringe along the bottom of some cheap lampshades I bought at GoodWill for a $1.

Which eventually turned into this for a client...

Thanks so much everyone! Gorgeous shades, miles! I was actually at Joann's today and stumbled upon a pamphlet on how to decorate lampshades, so I'm going to give it a try as soon as I can decide on some fabric. Thanks again for sharing :)
