Anyone know what this is called?

A few years back a friend received this really neat baby blanket and I have wanted to try and make something using this technique ever since. Yesterday I experimented and figured out how it was done (or at least it looks the same! LOL) and made a pillow cover but I was wondering if it had a name?

You take several layers of fabric and then sew in lines through all the layers evenly spaced apart. Once you're done, you take scissors and cut up the center in between the stitches, wash the piece and let fray.

chenille, that is what it is called, when you wash it make sure it is not with other things, the loose threads will make a mess, some folks tie the fabric in a pillowcase to wash, if you have a stiff brush you can brush to loosen the strings, lots of fun, not real good for baby things as the bits of threads can come off and get in the throat. I found out somewhere else that it's faux chenille.

I washed mine with other clothes and it honestly didn't leave threads all over. I don't see it leaving thread everywhere any time soon, either. The biggest time will probably be when I wash it. I mean my friend's didn't make a mess at all. Could it depend on which direction you sew in?

Cat or snail, sorry, but that really made me chuckle! Cats have sharp pointy teeth, snails and slugs have a rasping radula, snails/slugsleave a slime trail, cats don't, usually! Snails/slugs often leave thin curlywurly poop piles on or near the plant they've just devoured, cats......... Did the culprit leave any definite clues? Hope you get an ID and that the cat is OK......if that was who it was :-) Gill

This one is easy to ID. The seeds will become like velcroix and stick on all your clothes. It becomes the unpleasant plant when you find it stuck on all your clothes and in t=your pets hair. It a bane. In mass, there is a short period where it makes a nice white spelled effect but then you start to swear at it.

15-20 years ago i was in a mom and pop close-out store...they buy lots from auctions...and they had heavy duty ones and also potato mashers each were 99cents. I purchased a dozen off each and gave as Christmas gifts that year. I had not a clue what they were for until much later seeing them in cooking stores eventually. If you 'google image' fish spatula it will come up as well as the more standard long slender fish spatula for pan searing turning. I've not found many uses for it but I do make ravioli with fresh pasta that are a quick cook and large so it is better than my round spider for lifting out then into a buttered pan for searing. (fresh sage and garlic, yum).

Sweets, I've sewn it in all directions, I'm so glad you didn't get a mess, the commercial kind doesn't seem to "shed"if you sew on an bias, I don't think it will work, as you are cross grain. you can buy this by the yard, but it is pricy I find.

The amount of shedding also depends on the fabric you use. Osnaburg is commonly used and will shed (be sure to pre-wash it, too, as it shrinks a lot). Nancy's Notions sells Osnaburg and a special slash cutter (similar to a rotary cutter) with a channel guide for doing your own chenille. Check out nancynotions.com.

Your rows are supposed to be sewn on the bias. That eliminates raveling & just plumps the raw edges as it's washed.
