Alphabet questions from a newbie!

Questions from a Newbie:

Does anyone ever print out alphabet fonts and cut them out? Or do you all use the stick-ons or rub-ons? Do you use scissors or a craft knife? I have heard of the sticker paper you can print on which sounds like a great idea, but I am confused as to which is the better method of cutting. If not using the sticker paper, how do you glue them down? Appreciate any thoughts!

I have used a lot of the wonderful fonts and alphabets from a Software program called "Lettering Delights". The fonts and alphabets are VERY graphic and can be individually downloaded. Normal price is about $3.99 but often they have sales for $1 each.

They supply the software that you use to create your titles, journaling boxes, etc. I usually print them out on photo paper or colored paper stock and don't have to cut each individual letter out separately.

Recently they introduced "Transparent" alphabets so you can actually print them on top of papered paper, photographs or whatever and there is no box or border around the characters.

I guess I am confused about the "not having to cut them out" part! I have already printed them out on photo paper (wasn't sure if that was the correct thing to do at the time) and they look great, but I DID have to cut them out separately! Sorry to be so dense....am I not understanding it correctly?? Thanks for the link also!!

crsliz, I think there are as many ways people store their Cannas as there are Cannas. I grow most of mine in pots and I bring the pots and all in to the basement after the frost takes the leaves down. I give the soil a good washing with the hose. The Temp in the basement is between 50 -60 degrees. There is very little light. I water my pots about a 8 oz glass of water once a month, Just enough so they do not dry out. They start to sprout in March and I usually can put a good size growing plant outside at the end of May. You have to experiment and see what works for you. I just do not have time to dig up plants so any tender plants I grow are grown in pots and are used on the Patio, and Deck.

Gomphrena question from newbie

I LOVE Gomphrena, the strawberry field variety does super here and I live in West Texas and my Gomphrena thrives in full, no shade HOT HOT sun even when it's 105 for 10 days in a row. I do water it some though about every other day in that kind of heat. What I can't figure out is how to get it to grow from seed. I am having a terrible time trying to get it to seed outdoors. I have tried putting it 1/8 in and covering it with dirt and I have tried sewing on top of the ground and it has just refused to come up. What could I be doing wrong? I wait till April to put it in and there is no freezes here in April. What in the world am I doing wrong that I can't get it to come up?

enjoy the bloom, proceed as usual in September. one year of two blooms wont hurt it. that's what I like about hippeastrums- they'll throw you a random flower every so often. a lot of people on here just have a bloom or two all year and then a big bloom at some point. don't worry about it. if anything, you've been taking really good care of it if its throwing up an extra scape :)

I am in zone 7b in Georgia, and the "last frost date" for me is less than four weeks away. If your last frost date is also coming up soon, then you might want the head start that your plants would get from being sown indoors. They will germinate faster in the warmer temp of the house. What you choose to do may depend on the kinds of plants you are planning to grow. Winter Sowing can give you sturdier plants than starting them indoors, but if the seeds are for warm-season plants, that do best in summer heat, and if they take a long time to get to the flowering stage, you might prefer to start them indoors. Otherwise, you could have a longer wait for your flowers and/or veggies. The official WinterSown website shows/describes starting seeds in containers outdoors, but when I can, I prefer to put seeds right into the ground. In my yard, dill, beets, and 'German Giant' radish seeds were sowed into the garden several weeks ago, in cold soil and cold weather. The dill isn't up yet, but the beets and radishes are looking good. I don't use the baggie method, but I often pre-sprout cool-season crops like peas, back in February, before planting them. I start them in a flat/tray, in a seed starting mix, and transplant them to the garden on a less-cold day (we usually have a week or so of warm-ish weather near the end of Feb.). This pre-sprouting saves the seeds from rotting in the cold, wet ground. I would guess that the baggie method gives a similar result. This probably isn't enough to answer your questions, but it may be a start. Best wishes for great gardening! -Amy

I think what sewhappy means is that she scraps her titles the way they come out of the printer - black letters on a fancy paper, for example. So she'll have letters of some kind on a background and only needs to cut out a rectangle rather than individual letters. I hope that makes sense.

So you print the title you plan to use rather than the entire font?

When I want to cut out individual letters, I've always done it on cardstock or paper-type paper rather than sticker paper.

I do most of my cutting with scissors and pull out the exacto blade for particularly intricate stuff.

Then I affix them with a glue stick/tape runner/dots or whatever adhesive is handy.

craftfetish, Thanks! You answered all my questions!! I think I understand better what sewhappy was saying. I understand her to say she prints out the entire title, thus not having to cut out the individual letters. I was wondering about the alphabets because I have found a lot of neat alphabet fonts I like on different sites, on which the entire alphabet has to be downloaded. I like to sometimes mix them up, so was wondering what types of glue you use. I have been using a glue stick with pretty good success. I wasn't sure if I could use the tape runner/dots, but will try them as well. Thanks again!!
