Cellular shades with cordless feature
Comments (15)We have a patio door w/cordless, cellular shades (Graber brand). The look is similar to a French door but the panel on the left side is stationary. Consequently, the door part (on the right) opens toward the stationary panel on the left. The problem w/the cordless cell shades is that they stuck out too far from the stationary panel and from the door. This meant they would hit each other whenever the door was opened too far (it couldn't open all the way due to the shades). This happened a lot, unfortunately, because it was the door to the backyard and we go outside frequently. We've had the shades about four years; in the last six months or so, one of the cords snapped on the shade on the door so the blind would no longer stay up. We opened and closed these shade a lot b/c I liked them open but DH wanted privacy. Another thing about these shades is that they clanked against the door whenever it was opened or closed. I found that very annoying. I'm looking to replace these shades with panels on flush mount rods. Incidentally, we have a window with a corded cellular shade purchased at the same time and it's working great....See Morecellular shade question
Comments (3)auntsis, it sounds like you have a layout like mine. I also am considering the cellular shades that can be opened from the top or bottom. My thought was I could keep the top open all the time for light and keep the bottom down. As for as durability, I found one at JCPenney online that is called a metalized one or something like that. It is recommended for use with kids and pets. I suppose it's stronger than the other and easier to clean. Right now the standard 35-36 x 64 or 72 are $39.99, if I remember correctly....See MoreCordless cellular shades
Comments (2)Dedtired...thanks for your reply. I tossed my directions and it's impossible to get through to customer service at selectblinds so I thought I'd come here! I'm not sure what the purpose of them is/was?...See MoreLevolor, Graber, Bali cellular shades
Comments (3)For our current house I did the same research 2 years ago and ended up staying with Hunter Douglas. You need to shop the different HD vendors in your area. You used to be able to shop fro HD online, but they stopped that to protect the HD distributors. My parents used to live in NJ and we had always bought from an HD vendor there. When I moved to CA I priced it out with a local vendor and his prices were much higher that the NJ ones. Luckily since we had a history with the NJ vendor we can still order from them and the blinds get drop shipped straight from HD. Their customer service is very good. I had one blind get a knot and I was able to drop off at a local HD vendor and he shipped to HD. It was back in 2 weeks and I wasn't charged anything. I liked the quality, feel and mechanisms on the HD blinds much better, and felt it was worth a bit more, but when I compared the pricing at JC Penney, it wasn't that much cheaper than the pricing I got from my HD vendor in NJ...See Morejoaniepoanie
