Shaker Boxes - Anyone tried this Tech yet??

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this technique yet? I've seen a few lo's using it and I think they are just adorable! I only wish I knew how to make them? Suggestions are welcome!!

Ok, I don't know too much about it but I have seen it and it's so cute!! Apparently in the Unique Technique II Book it shows you how to do it. I don't have that book :( .

Anyways, it's a small square that is cut out in the middle and then you cut out a page protector to cover the middle (a see through window). Inside the square you can fill it with whatever, punches, buttons, bits of paper, ribbon bows..... etc.

There is going to be no way you will be able to make a more sturdy tower using PVC as you can with 1/2" electrical conduit. You can make your own for about $12 each. Its very easy, and you can custom make yours to fit the size you would like to have. The SFGF sells theirs which are 6' tall. But, by the time you end up pounding them into the ground, they are about 5' tall. I prefer to have them 7' in the air. You also need to consider this-at the end of the growing season, you might have as much as 60 pounds of fruit/squash 6' in the air. With the foliage on the tower, it almost becomes a parachute. But, with the rebar in the ground and the conduit, it will not be going anywhere. Its the only way to do it. You will do nothing but frustrate yourself if you try it with PVC, or even worse, with wood.

I can see how this could be fun to do with little kids ....easy quick and a fun morning. Never as a regular way of making pancakes. The things that bothers me are the packaging, the nutritional value and the cost. I've become "born again" on waste management and try very hard to reduce the amount of waste our home generates. There has got to be zero nutritional value in these. Fresh fruit, granola and milk in a bowl would be way quicker and a whole bunch better for your kids if the issue is a fast breakfast. The cost per pancake has to be much more than scratch and the way food prices are going up this seems frivolous. Mind you the cynic in me says those that can least afford it will buy it. So for a treat and a fun thing for little kids , once in a blue moon, sure. As a breakfast staple , no way. As a pantry item for an "all growed up" household, no way.

Anyone ever tried chalks??

Patti, I use chalks alot but I use the acid free ones that you can buy at a scrapbook store, it comes in the shape of a painters palatte and has I think 20 different colors. I use them mostly with rubber stamping or stencils and use Qtips to color in the stamps. I don't have a problem with the color coming off they seem to set pretty good. Im not sure about the regular basic chalks, I'll have to go back and read that article. I do like the effect of the chalks very soft a subtle. Happy chalking!

Don’t buy the product. I had this floor installed after looking for over a year at other floors, tile included. I’m extremely sorry I used this product. The Hill Country phone number is not in service and the floor feels cheap when you walk on it. It keeps coming up all over the place. You can’t see this, you can only FEEL it when you walk on it. The guy DOES come back to inject more glue but how long will he keep doing this, while more and more places pop up, even places where they already injected more glue. I have some area rugs to use, because I’m tired of walking on the spots that keep coming unglued, but I cannot keep buying bigger and bigger rugs as the glue keeps drying or disintegrating underneath. Honestly when I walk on this floor, I feel like I’m walking on an unfolded cardboard box. I’m embarrassed for myself that I bought this. I wish I could cover it with tile or something but I don’t have the money to start over. Other wood companies want you to leave your house for three days. I didn’t want to give someone access to my house for three days so I chose Hill Country contractors. Now I wish I had taken the risk and just taken my valuables with me. I’ve been taken by too many contractors. I agree with the review above. They make you lose faith in the human race. I was talking with someone the other day about predators and we said lions aren’t the biggest predators in the “jungle” (world). Humans are.

I haven't actually seen a scrap page done this way but it does sound like a shaker card. I'll try to adapt it for you. 2 pieces of card stock (however big you want), one piece from a page protector (the same size as the card stock), double stick foam tape (like the pop dots or you can put double sided tape on fun foam). Cut the shape of your window on one piece of card stock and the fun foam if using that and attach the page protector on the back side using double sided tape. Tape the foam tape strips (you want to make a frame) or fun foam on the back side of the page protector. Place your confetti on the page protector and tape your other piece of card stock on that (using the double sided tape). You now have a sandwich 1st layer is the card stock that is cut out in the middle, 2nd the page protector, 3rd the foam strips (this gives the piece some lift so that the confetti can move freely inside)4th the second piece of card stock to seal up the unit.
