Leaky Shower, How to Determine Cause

One of our upstairs baths is over the kitchen fridge. There is an obious repair from a prior owner as the ceiling has been repaired in that spot. In the last few months we are noticing a leak from that shower. The house is from the 40s and the baths have not been updated. The bottom of the shower is tile, in relatively good shape. We have no plans to remodel this bathroom but do need to repair. When we noticed the leak we stopped using the shower (no problems with toilet or sink. recently we ran the shower again and it started pouring water into the kitchen through a spot light near the fridge. It also got this sort of fishy smell which took a few days to go away.

How do we determine the cause, we do not know a plumber and we are in an expensive area. Some people might tell us its the lead pan just to replace it! Could it be a bad pipe? How could we tell before calling in a plumber. Its definitely not the spout or faucet as we checked that Thanks
