Prep Sink Placement in Island

If you have a prep sink in your island, where is it located? I can't decide if I should place it on the end, or shift it down 2 ft. so there is decent counterspace on either side. The island is about 8 1/2 ft. long. KD believes there should be counterspace on each side, but i know many of you have it on the corner so people can work on the long and short side of the island.

I was just this second thinking that I wished that I had work space on both sides of my prep sink, and that I would probably use it more if I did.

For me, it wouldn't make sense to move it down to give more room, because they it would be too close to the main sink, and would be in a higher traffic area.

But if you have the space, and it makes sense, I think it is nice to have space on both sides of a sink.

We have some counterspace between the prep sink and the end, but not much (~14"). This has worked out to be the best of both worlds for us. It makes it so that I can set things down on either side of the sink, which often comes in handy. It also makes it so that someone standing at the end can easily use the sink, while leaving that person a bit more space to work. I have often stood at the end and reached over to wash my hands, so it's a very easy reach. I'm really glad we put it where we did.

Mrs. Smith, Thank you. This stone was just right for our tastes - simple lines enhanced by the patterns in natural materials. It is Azul do Mar, an accurate name because it looks very similar to a photo we took of the ocean off Point Lobos. Blues and greens mixed with the white of the wave tops and some little reddish brown spots like the bits of seaweed or an otter popping its head up. It is a quartzite and very similar in properties to Azul Macaubas. Both come from Brazil. Azul Macaubas usually has more white with streaks of aqua blue - more like the sky than the ocean. They are often sold as "granite" as are any other hard stones. It is very very hard - harder than granite because it is composed mainly of quartz, but the impurities give it its color. It is very low porosity - our fabricator insisted on sealing it because he seals everything, but in the tests we did on our sample before sealing, nothing stained it. We have been using it for 5 years and have not resealed. Our fabricator said it took longer on his machines because it is so hard. Nothing short of a diamond is going to scratch it. I've never had anything that is as easy to clean. A wipe with a damp towel usually does the job even if my family has allowed a spot of wine or tomato sauce to dry on. The downsides: Like most blue stones, it is more expensive - we paid about $54 a square foot for the slabs. It isn't very common - only two yards around us had it. Supposedly, it usually comes in smaller slabs but either that isn't accurate or we were extremely lucky. The first slabs we saw were 67 by 54 inches, then at Bedrosians we found ones large enough to do our island with one slab but our L would have needed 2 seams. Bedrosians checked their other stores and found 124 x 64 inch slabs which allowed us to do our L with one seam.

For me, the 24" pantry location would be a terrible place for the fridge. Way too much trouble to get to while cooking. I would much rather leave it as is, since, as I said, I know that's not a terrible situation to live with. Exactly how much room is there between stove and fridge? I had only 12". For the prep sink, I meant the corner of the island so it can be accessed from both the stove and the table sides...So the corner pointing toward the fridge and family room. (Table side, right end) Corner cooktops aren't the best choice for everyone, but with the short stove side and long sink run, it could be just the answer you need to keep the fridge handy to the stove, and still not ruin anything else that works about your layout. Good call, Bmore. How about putting the pantry and maybe the broom closet where you now have the ovens and make a baking ctr and oven area beside the butler's pantry? You could then use the table side of the island for bigger baking projects and it'd be handy to the prep sink in the location I suggested. Here is a visual, including Bmore's corner cooktop:

Thanks. I spent hours pouring through posts and finished kitchens and I've come to the conclusion that the sink would get more use across from the range top than it would at the other end of the island. Being able to sit around the corner of the island will be good too - even though this late-breaking change is stressing me out.

Our island is 7x5 and we placed the prep sink 12" from the end. This makes gives a bit of landing space on the edge side, but not so much that you can't use the sink from that side as well.

My island is approx. 7.5 ft. long (3 30" cabs) x 48" wide, and I have a 21" x 16" (interior dimension) prep sink at one end. This set up has been great for me. I have only 6" to the end of the island on one side of the sink, but the narrow landing space has been fine for me-- don't use it as a landing space that much, and when I do, no spills yet. I love having more than 5 1/2 ft. of uninterrupted work space on the other side of the prep sink. Besides its placement, two things I love about my prep sink are it's size-- it's big enough to rinse a turkey in, or do just about anything I would like, and my trash/composting/recycling pullouts beneath.

Mine is on one end too (6.5ftx 38in), and I'm really glad it ended up this way. We put it there mainly because the island is opposite my stove and I wanted to be able to lift pots off and put them right behind me onto the island. At first I thought I wanted it in the middle but for me I like having the big long space to do all of my prep work, and to use as a serving area. If you only had one sink in the kitchen I would say you'd want space on both sides, but as a prep sink having space on only one side really isn't a problem.

morton5 - I love your kitchen especially the espresso cabinets. Would you share details, please? I think I even recognize the famous Jeffrey Court Fire and Ice backsplash.

Mine is also at one end -- to support baking and to prevent butt bumping at the cooktop. We have a slightly bullet shaped end, so the room on the end to the side of the sink varies from about 11-12". I'm glad we have some landing space there.

Our prep sink in a 9' island has approx. 30" of space to the right and a long open stretch to the left. I think the sink is about 15" wide so that is about 5' of space to the left. We are empty nesters so we have a d/w drawer in the cabinet to the right of the sink and this will be our everyday sink and dishwasher unless we have company. When I do hand wash at my prep/auxiliary main sink I'll be working from left to right and placing clean pots, pans and utensils on a dish towel to the right of the sink above the d/w drawer. Thus, for me, space on both sides of the prep sink was mandatory for the dual purpose of this sink.

Thanks Debbie_123, the cabinets are Ikea Tidaholm in black/brown, and the backsplash is indeed Jeffrey Court's Fire and Ice. The kitchen has been done for almost 7 months but I still haven't posted a "finished kitchen." I have my new kitchen table now, and have finished a string of entertaining, so I'm hoping to have the time do the comprehensive post next week.

Malhgold, our island is approx. 4x7 1/2ft. We placed our sink in from the corner because I wanted more surface to place items from oven/stove. The other end will have more room for prep and has seating area. Our prep sink is 16"x8. I still have plenty of space. By placing sink in 2ft, it breaks up the slab a bit. My sister calls it my "autopsy table". Lovely thought, isn't it? I need to get that image out of my head.
