Baby gift ideas

My nephew is getting married next month - it was originally planned, then postponed, now rescheduled due to the arrival of a baby in September. So we're in the position of buying a wedding gift for May and baby gifts this summer or early fall.

I thought about sewing some things for the baby nursery this summer. The only thing I came up with so far, was one of those cloth balls made from scrap fabrics. (I found a pattern for same, online.)

Does anyone have any other ideas? It's been 20+ years since my kids were babies. (One is 22, the other is 21, and neither are married yet, thankfully!)

You could do receiving blankets,hooded towels,burp pads,bibs,baby blankets.For later months when it's cold you could make this wrap thing,can't remember what it's called,but has a hood,(i think) and the sides are shaped and fold across the baby and the bottom folds up .Supposedly stays put better than a blanket tha always slides off.Just take a trip to the fabric store and look thru the pattern books,you'll see what i'm talking about and more.

Kathi has given you a ton of good ideas. Playtex makes a sippy cup you can put a monogrammed fabric insert into. Paci holders are also popular. They're made of ribbon, snaps and a mitten clip.

I colored the Mapei premixed grout/adhesive with just basic red acrylic paint. Just a couple of drops. I grouted the heart for big sis first, and then added more grout to my dark pink mix to make a lighter pink for the baby frame. I have used other colors for different grout, and the paint seems to work well, except for black or shades of gray. To get a decent gray, you need too much paint, and then the grout is too watery. For that, I use Rit dye. For the pearls, I popped them in the grout, waited a bit for the grout to harden, pulled them out, and then E6000'd them after the grout was dry. Otherwise, I've had the experience of pearls falling out, which is not good. Also, it is darn hard to grout around pearls.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions! Colleen, from what I've read on the web, per your suggestion, red is happiness and good fortune and gold is prosperity. The bank sounded like a nice idea, symbolic of prosperity and all. Tiffany has some darling ones but sterling is too extravagant, and I don't like the symbolism of plate. OTOH, Alphadorables have all those beautiful piggy banks, so I've put in a custom request to ask if she can do a ram. Apparently, this is specifically the year of the goat on the stamps and all, but it's interpreted as a sheep by the people because, like, what's the difference anyway, and sheep are cuddlier, calm and gentle (um...okay, but I've been around sheep...maybe that's supposed to be in comparison to goats, which I can get behind), and useful for warmth and good things. Or something like that. And finding a goat bank would just be too hard! There's one on Amazon Marketplace (outside seller/shipper) that would be perfect, but they have a disclaimer about flaws. I have big issues with third rate merchandise being sold under the heading of "handmade has flaws". There's a difference between a thin spot in the paint where the brush pulled too much (acceptable and proves it wasn't done by a robot), and the paint slapped on any old way, chipped, exposed undercoat where it rested, and thumbprints for the love of Mike! I figure if they're warning about it, it's a problem. I thought that a bank with some "golden dollars" would be both a very American thing and fit with the Chinese traditions. The gift doesn't have to be Chinese in nature, however, just not offensive. If the bank doesn't work out, I'll still need some backup ideas. One, of course, is the step that Ellendi originally suggested, and the scooter or rocker animal I originally thought of (inspired by one I saw that looks like a cuddly bug, but would a bug upset the grandmother? There are plenty of sheep, but do they want a houseful of sheep?).

One thing for sure- if you are near them, I am fairly certain that a dinner or meal or anything like that would be greatly appreciated. I know some people set up meal trains and it's wonderful. That is aside from a gift, but I think it's such a great idea. Someone sets up a calendar with the new parents' circle of friends/family and people can pick a date and bring dinner. It can be home cooked of course, or even just letting someone know that you are bringing over pizza and whatever. THey did this for my daughter when she had her 2nd, and it was really a wonderful thing to know that a few nights a week, dinner was going to be taken care of.

Make flannel receiving blankets 45" x 45". DS just had a baby and his MIL made them some and they love them! They are great for swaddling. Knit blankets leave too much wiggle room.

I love the I Spy quilts that others have made over on the quilt forum (check them out), even a smaller version would be nice for when baby is older and going in the car or out visiting.....I agree that receiving blankets are nice but making something for when baby is a bit older wouldn't hurt either IMHO. You could make one of those pillows designed to go around a nursing mothers waist to support baby on, then it can double as a support for baby to sit up in, or lean across. DGD is nearly 2 and still uses hers to lay on while having a story read to her. You could also make the covers for them.

Covers to put in the cart at the store (keeps baby safe from everything from germs to rough edges).

When my kids were small I was given a "cover" to hold baby up in the high chair, it was shaped like a big T with long ties on the bottom end, they came up between the legs and tied at the back of the chair. (when kids got older I used it to "tie them in" big people chairs when we'd go some place with no high chair available.

Hobby Lobby is having a sale on Simplicity Patterns this week, 99 cents each, got several ideas in the book at WM, off to Hobby Lobby today, apparently WM no longer matches prices.
