Making first scrapbook page...HELP!

I used to be a regular poster on the Crafts & Dec. forum but have been away for quite awhile. I'm hoping everyone is still willing to help.

I'm working on my first scrapbook page and I have a question. Do you use BOTH sides of your page or just one? I've done one side but don't know whether to turn it over and do that side or move on to a new page. I don't have a clue. Thanks!

I guess it depends on what you used for the background of your page. If you stuck your bits and pieces onto the 'cardstock' that comes with the album, then certainly use the back of it. I tend to use other paper for the background, nearly always a sheet of coloured cardstock. Then I slip in between the album page and the page protector. Then I do the same for the other side. I wouldn't use both sides of the coloured cardstock though, because I don't think it is sturdy enough.

Looking at the finished product, it is usual to open the album and see a left hand side and a right hand side. How you get to that is entirely up to you. You may choose whatever look you want to. A matter of individual choice with what works for you.

Thank you, Jocelyn. I did use another paper for the background and I just assumed you glue that paper to the album page...had no idea you're supposed to use page protectors either! Thanks for that information. I suppose I can find the page protectors wherever I find my scrapbooking supplies??? I'm SO new to this and I imagine I'll learn a lot as I go. Thanks again. Sue

Dear Lori, The best advice I can give you is to buy a good scrapbook idea book. It can give you the basics, and be there later in the middle of the night (yeah, after the addiction takes hold you will do it at all hours.LOL) when everyone else is gone to bed, to help answer your questions and give you good ideas on what to do with your pages. There are plenty available at Walmart. I think there is one there for about $12.00 (good money spent) that has a brownish cover that is great for beginners. Penny

Barbra, I am hoping that I helped answer some of your questions. I too have gathered scrapbook pages (with the help of a great many of you on here) for a little girl who had lukemia. Unfortunatly she passed away but her mother loves the books and pages that were made by the many people who tried to make her life special. I know your friend and her daugther will especially treasure these books and I hope for a good out come for her daughter. Love Penny

I did not want this post to just have one or two messages because I really think what you are doing is wonderful and we should offer whatever help we can. Your daughter is very lucky to have you do this for her. The way I did my books fast but with great detail was to not get all wrapped up in making it too fancy. Keep it simple. You can choose several primary colors for your papers. One idea I do is to have each page have one of the colors. So the first pages will be red, second pages blue, then green then yellow. Then start the colors all over again. You can lay out the pages first then assign the colors. But stick with just a few colors so the book will have a nice flow. And just remember, too much, can be too much. The reason I redid my daughter's baby book was because it was too buzy, too many different colors that did not flow when going page to page. If you are spending too much time trying to make it perfect, you won't have any fun. Keep asking for advise. You can also go to craft stores and they offer classes or days that you can go in with others. You will have folks to give you advise right then and there.

I am probably posting this too late to help you, but there will probably be women there cutting photos, that is called cropping. A sales rep of some sort selling her supplies and teaching a simple idea for your pages or demostrating the use of a scrapbook tool. Etc. Penny

I would NOT use the same sheet for both sides! It is TOO HARD to try and rearrange your pages later, when you find photos that should have went with the others, if you do this. I would only mat one set of photos, or photo layout to one page, and leave the other side blank. Good luck. Love Penny

Thanks a lot! I TOTALLY get what you're saying. I know most likely I'll find other pictures later on...in fact that happened to me just today. I made a memory quilt for my mother's Christmas gift last year and I searched and searched for some pictures I wanted to use but never found them...not until today that is! I thought they were lost forever. If I do it like you suggest, then I'll have a place for the other "lost" pictures too. Thanks again. Sue
