What part of scrapbook making do you dislike the most?

What part of scrapbook making do you dislike the most? I hate journaling just because my handwriting looks so bad, and next would have to be cleaning up after I have trashed my scrapbook room. LOL Penny

I'm not crazy about journaling either. Even when I have written notes, I can NEVER think of enough to say or it just doesnt sound right, lol.

Penny, you hit it right on the head! Journaling can be a chore! I just got my new CK mag and they have a very good article on journaling and how to plan for it. I might try a couple of ideas. Now if only they could teach me write in a straight line. LOL!

Whatever room my husband has just been in. he's like Pigpen in the Peanuts cartoons, sometimes. Always got a trail forming behind him to which he's oblivious and when I call him on it, offended that I am so picky. Whatever. I've got used to cleaning toilets every time I go in the bathroom, picking up his clutter and putting it away (usually not more than 2 feet from where he left things, is the place they belong.)

Well, we did a mini "refresh" on our kitchen in 1999 to add a dishwasher and standard-sized range, as we had one of those apartment-sized ranges that DH detested. When we did the mini refresh, we also changed countertops, sink & faucet, and we had put in peel and stick vinyl over the hideous gold linoleum when we first moved in. That being said, we still had issues with layout, with the only really useable countertop being the 15" to left of the range and 5" to the right of it. There was a small swath of countertop across from the stove, next to the sink, but because it was right by the back door, it became a catchall. When I took anything out of the oven, it pretty much had to go on the stovetop. Baking cookies just wasn't very fun after a while. I sorta stopped doing it. :^( Then there was the wall between the kitchen and livingroom that made the kitchen seem so dark and cramped. The lack of storage was the biggest issue we had. I still get the heebs when I think of that cabinet where the plastic storage containers lived. I don't know how many times I sat on the floor and cleaned out that blasted cabinet, just to have it heave out plasticware all over me the next time I opened that door. I'm pretty sure that DH would open the door *just enough* to throw an item in there. We had no venting over the range, instead we had a cabinet directly over the range, and it was lower than standard. When we did the remodel, we could see big black burn marks underneath. Lovely. Our garbage was located across the kitchen on the stairwell landing. If I had gunk in my hands, I had the pleasure of carrying it across the floor, leaving a nice little dribble trail. Fun times! The giant fluorescent light box, with that hideous tube light. I tried to "tart it up" at one point, but in the end, it was just a big rectangle with an ugly light, so it had to go. My peel and stick vinyl tiles, so wonderful and bright when we installed them, were pitted and cracking in places. No matter how long I scrubbed on my hands and knees, there were areas where the tile was worn, and the dirt was embedded. Yuck. The kitchen wasn't awful; it just was not a joy to work in. Now I enjoy baking and cooking in there, and putting away the tupperware is not an exercise in frustration! Hooray! Oh, happy day! :^)

Dusting. All the gyrations up and down to clean every.little.thing drives me crazy. Fortunately my housekeepers do a decent job every 2 weeks but I have to do baseboards on occasion and check the DR chairs before company. Cleaning the outside of windows and the tracks, and the patio and porch furniture after yellow pollen season here. We have to put away the cushions or else those would be impossibly dirty too. I’m in Lars’ camp re checkbook resolution. I keep track of my transactions in a register and resolve those via online banking about every couple of days or so to ensure transactions are correct. Almost everything is auto-pay or I can pay electronically. I don’t balance to the penny just as long as it’s close.

Do most designers dislike hex floor tile?

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I clarified with my designer friend that while she prefers straight lines, she does like the size and neutral color of these larger hex tiles. We will not be living in this house long term and that's why I am keeping the tiles a neutral cream color. Plus, the warm color goes well with our newly refinished oak hardwood floors. The smaller bathroom has a tub/shower combo. While the original budget doesn't include replacing the tub and tiling the walls, I may have to think that decision. The master bathroom and the laundry room will be done in either Lost River 24"x 24" in Cascade or Arizona Tile Borgo 24" x 48" in Caldo. The kitchen cabinets are a dark cherry and the doors have traditional raised fronts. So, I don't want the other cabinetry to even try to compete with the kitchen. The cabinetry in those three other rooms will have doors with flat fronts. The bathrooms will have floating vanities in a soft white and the laundry room will have off white cabinetry. Below is the kitchen. I am replacing all of the pulls. The countertop is black granite tiles and will also be replaced with a single level countertop in light color quartz. Let me know if I am making any grievous errors with the cabinetry for the three other rooms. Here's one of the drawer fronts on a piece of Lost River Cascade tile.

i must be the only one who doesnt mind the journaling part. i hate the cleaning up part. But come November after the wedding our new place will have room for me to have a scrapbooking room so i dont have to keep dragging it out to do something in em. PS dont journal in straight lines make em wavy or spiral or wrap around the photos. i cant draw a straight line either even with a ruler haha

The part I dislike is sitting there debating if the page looks good or...(before mounting everything I spend too long trying to decide the "best place" for everything) I have started journaling more, I figure what a great thing for my daughter to read later on and also to see her mom's original handwriting (or clever lettering!) hopefully giving more sentimental value to the book instead of just the photos. I don't like my hand writting either. When I first started I wouldn't write on the pages at all. Except to date it. Now I've realized I need to write, and not worry about my hand writting. My kids will appreciate this later on. I also found a solution to the clean up. I found a very small trash can at the Dollar Tree. When I have freinds over to scrap book with me. I put it in the center of the table, so everyone can use it. Then there's not a mess for me to clean up when they leave.

I think the part that I find the hardest (not necessarily what I dislike the most) is deciding on layouts for simple pages (not holidays and special occasions - those seem to come very easily to me). For instance, i had several sets of pictures of my daughter from last fall, between pumpkin patches, jumping in leaves, and just basic fall pictures. I got tired of putting leaf stickers spiraling down the page and using cranberry/hunter/brown/orange colors. I felt like I was being so boring and ordinary. By the time I got to Thanksgiving, I couldn't come up with any layout ideas. That bugs me.

I find that journaling comes and goes for me. For some pages I can go on and on and others, well, I just can't think of anything worthwhile to say so on those days I really hate it. :)

And clean up always stinks, whether it's for scrapbooking or weekly house cleaning!!! :)

Journaling for me too. I do use the pencil/ruler, journal genie but my problem is coming up with the words to write. My handwritting isn't too bad but its not beautiful like some I have seen. But it's mine and that's all I got to give. Sometimes I will think of cool things to write down when I'm not scrapbookking, all I have to do is remember to write them down! LOL Time to carry around a tape recorder.

Well I haven't done much scrapbooking but the things I dislike the most is cleaning up. (I don't have a desk or space of my own so I am going to clean up everytime I finish, which I think will keep me doing as much as I would like to)

The only other real downer for me is the price. I am just starting and have spent almost $50 already on just templates and paper, haven't even got myself an album yet arghhhhhh.... At this rate I will have no money to develop my film :o)

I hate the cleaning up, too! I wish I had a place where I could leave the stuff out. I'd do it a lot more if I didn't have to clean up all the time.
I can't figure out how to use the templates right, either. Do you use an Exacto knife or draw the shape on the picture with a marker. I can always see the marker line. Help!

to Deb re: templates. I draw on my photo with a blue pencil from CM--it is called All Stabilo, and CM has now come out with one that is blue on one end and white on the other. When you're done cutting out your picture, rub the photo with a cotton ball and the blue comes right off!

The part I dislike is journalling also, but not for the reasons you gals mentioned. I just don't like that it is so time consuming. You see, I do it 2 or 3 times. First, a rough draft on scrap paper, then in pencil on my page (to make sure it fits, if not I can erase and edit) then finally in ink on the page. After doing all that, I'm pretty much sick of my words.

The thing I hate most is not having all the time I want to do this! Sometimes it seems I just get started and I have to stop for some reason or the other--like meals, sleep,etc.

Seriously, it seems that no matter how long I take to plan a layout, arrange stuff over and over, decide on lettering, etc., the minute I'm finished with it, I have a better idea! I've used lots of UN-DO because of this problem. I guess decision making is not my strong suit!!!

Hi! After 3&1/2 years of collecting materials and reading 'Memory Makers' magazine, I've finally succeeded in completing several pages. In fact, I've started "memory photo albums" for both sets of grandparents! They will each receive a "starter" scrapbook with six pages of photo memory pages of their grandson and a promise of additional memory photo pages to be sent every few months. Now I just need to complete the pages for our book! I had planned on starting a scrapebook when our son was born 3&1/2 years ago, but I felt so overwhelmed about "how to" that I only succeeded in making one page. What finally got me stated was a set of really great photos from a family trip to Florida with my parents and my brother's family, and the need for some really great Mother's Day gifts. So, I found this great little package of beach scrapebook making pharaphernalia and now, there's no stopping me. I've made twevele page (six for each book) in two weeks! I think what keeps me motivated is that I know that both my mom and my mom-in-law will get a real kick (not to mention both dads) out of the albums. I can just see my mom now---she's going to feel so pround showing-off her grandson's memory album to all her co-workers (all of whom are teachers and will just love the concept!). Anyway, I just found this site and think it's great. Can't wait to read all the postings! Now I have a question: What does "cm" stand for? Is it a mail-order catologue? Thanks for all the great info.

CM stands for Creative Memories which is a compnay that sells scrapbooking supplies, they are a bit expensive and are sold through consultants (Alot like tuperware).

I hate when I get glue on the front of photos and have to try to wipe it off.

I hate the way, despite my efforts, my work surface becomes cluttered with tools and scraps and really starts getting on my nerves!

I hate it when I know exactly what I want to do, but I just can't seem to do it fast enough!
