Hi, my Mom always glues a cotton batting to the front cover first, then lays the fabric over it and glues the fabric down on the inside of the binder. Hope this helps.

Way too far gone for fabric. The ceiling does not appear to be 'cracked'. There is some kind of wood paneling up there and it has delaminated. Possibly nailed up over old plaster or drywall to cover up other damage. The cabinets & AC need to be removed and the paneling needs to come off. Probably more demo of whatever is behind the paneling. Drywall is cheap, if you can DIY.

Remove skirt and replace legs (if existing legs aren't worthy of visibility). The skirt really informs the look.Totally different look without. Then live with the sofa like that for a couple months. Then get an estimate for cost to reupholster. Price could be less than you think. The good thing is the currect fabric reads as a neutral so a new look (skirt no skirt) and throw pillows could really make a difference.
