Hutch - scrapbook paper, 'paint', fabric?

I ran across a blog the other day where they used scrapbook paper on the back of their hutch. However their hutch was black and they used pretty black and white paper, white dishes, silver... I really liked it as well as when people paint the back of their hutches.

My hutch isn't what I would've picked style wise but it was my Grammy's and works in the kitchen area. Although not worth much by way of money it's sentimental to me and I can't bring myself to paint it at all. Not at this point anyhow.

Soooo... what do you think of the scrapbook paper idea? I'm not sure even what pattern or color I'd go with as I have a lot going on in the hutch already.

maybe I could paint that large poster board stuff (you know the kind all of us paint goofies buy to sample on), cut to fit and paint that instead of the wood. If don't right I don't know that it would look bad.

One more though, I have left over fabric from when I redid my chairs. It's the gold with red specs. Think I also have some left over of the red stool cushion/valance fabric but that pattern is busy and I'm also not sure how wide my hutch is.

I also really like burlap.

Open to suggestions. I could also leave it alone. :)

Hey Shee -

I love that look too and have seen it on several blogs. However, I can't remember a hutch that was not painted, so I'm not sure how it would look with the stained wood. If I were you, I'd go and pick up some pieces of scrap book paper and try it out. See how it looks and what you think.

Your hutch is pretty as is, but I understand wanting that extra little *something*. I actually plan on doing this on a bookcase in my hubby's office.

I know burlap is the big trend right now, but honestly, I do see it with your furnishings.

There is a stiffing for material, I have sprayed bows and lace with it and it stays pretty stiff if you use more then one coat, dont know the name as I had to change the bottle and threw it away. I used varnish to seal some saltdough ornaments that had small bows on them, they got real hard but didnt look very nice, you might try liquid starch on the material parts,try the varnish on a scrap piece and see how it looks, maybe someone will have another idea for you oddie

inspiredisabel - beautiful home! Can you tell me about the shelf/cabinet that is below that fabulous mirror behind the slipcovered chairs? Is it a shelf attched to the wall, or is it a cabinet/piece of furniture? I would like to add something behind the couch, between it and the wall in my living room, but it needs to be something skinny (and cheap!). Trying to decide if I should just put skinny shelf at couch height, or try to find a very skinny console table. You won't be able to see anything but the top surface. Just want something so I can add some interest/items with height behind the couch. Hope that made sense. Can you tell me what your is? Thanks!

If I use this hutch, I plan on adding a middle section to give it more balance with the room. It would be sort of like this. To answer a few questions - the upstairs sideboard is too wide for this spot. It's much wider than the one that I'm going to use in the alcove. I'm not worried about having a place to put food with this hutch, the sideboard could be used for that when needed. Though I've never entertained since we moved here 9 years ago, and not sure if I ever will. Don't have any family close enough to stop in for a visit (nearest is over 400 miles away). I use the dining room table way more for large projects than for eating on, so I really like having the space. Our main dishes are multi colored fiestaware that lives in the glass front cabinets in the kitchen, and I love how they look there. Does not bother me to own china I'm only going to look at, I own lots of stuff that serves no purpose other than it makes me smile when I look at it. I won't use it for everyday because my husband is a klutz when it comes to hand washing, or insists on putting everything in the dishwasher. He's gotten near death threats for taking the scrub pad to my china. It's been a long standing joke about faucets with dents in them, every place he has lived, that has been the result, until we got the high arch faucet and enamel sink. He's too afraid to "shake" the water out of a pan in case he let go and broke the sink. His Dad use to say that he was coming to our house to dent the faucet as DH had dented everyone they had while he was growing up. I would respond that he didn't need to, as mine ended up with dents shortly after installing them anyway. But back to the hutch - I've given up on any plants in the house - since I have a 6,000 sq foot garden, that's enough growing stuff, and the cats mess with the plants any. This is Oliver( the mask faced Siamese) and his sister when they were little - in our previous house. I had my last indoor plant die about three years after moving here, and I've not had one since. Could not do any windows there - here is the door from the other side - there is a stairway behind the hutch. We have moved and replace every window and door in the house, so I'd have to really sweet talk DH if I wanted to change one now. Or wait until he's gone for a week and do it without him! We moved the door to the side and ran the roof across the two story section so we could create a small front porch. I think all farmhouses should have a porch. Actually the whole dining room use to be the front porch at one time, then it got enclosed, but that was long before we bought it. I won't be rushing into anything with this, I would love to be able to use it instead of sending it to the goodwill or dump. Thanks so much for all the great ideas and opinions. Here is a little more info. It's actually all one piece and not a top and bottom and there were never doors on it. There is a label somewhere that says "True Grand Rapids-Cabinet Making Certified" although they advertised it as being in excellent condition it's definitely not. I like the examples that were posted and my family room has a side table and coffee table that are distressed off white (Broyhill Attic Heirloom series) but the wall behind it will be a tan color when the drywall is finished in a week or two, the floor it will sit on will be honey oak and the chairs around the table are black. My table actually matches the color of the piece now but I always have a table cloth on it these days (I've got 4 kids). I've kicked around the idea of going barn red but either black, off white, or red, I'm just not sure the formal piece will look right going rustic although some of the examples above have that same formal look and they painted up very nice. I'll try to post pictures of the surroundings tomorrow. Thanks again for the ideas and opinions.

Shee I wouldnt do anything permanent to your hutch and you know how much I like painted furniture.
You could get some very thin luan plywood cut to fit and glue fabric or paper to that. You would need to play with the size so that when the edges overlap the edge, the plywood fits snugly.

It was nice in the blog, but I don't know if I see it for your hutch. It seems a bit too cutesy for your space.

Well maybe I'll pick up some scrapbook paper or hold some paint samples behind to see.

Paintchips - It was The Nester. I have the Lettered Cottage saved in my blog favs. too.
I love, love, love Nester's hutch but that hutch wouldn't work in place of mine with how things are.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I see these awesome ideas on blogs and want to try stuff in my house. I'll have to try it out on a bookcase.

If your hutch was your grammy's, I wouldn't do anything permanent to change it; it is worth something as is, not if altered.

IMO, if you wanted to change something about it, cut a piece of wood to fit in under the top, along the back and make your changes to that piece of wood. If you ever change your mind, you remove it or change it to something different.

If you want to change the look of your hutch, add some more colorful accesories to it and arrange those sitting where the urn and candlesticks are to groups of 3s.

Cottage! Thank you. It was going to bug me. LOL

It seems to work in The Nester because the shelves are open. If you took the doors off of the top half, would it look like that or are there vertical bars?

Sandra - Good point. I haven't messed with the bottom part of the hutch really. All three of those pieces are too tall to fit in the hutch so that's where they went. I could change it up now and then.

Paint chips - Vertical bars. I think it kind of looks like it's missing something. ?

I had a pine hutch with mirrors on the back. When I got tired of them, I cut/put together poster board to fill in the three sections and covered the poster board with fabric. The fabric was aged looking and had script in a foreign language. I used double stick tape to hold it to the mirror. It was easily removed later on, when I got tired of the fabric.

Yeah, you are right. I was hoping those weren't there. It would have been cute with open shelves.

I think your hutch looks great as it is! I'm not sure you would even notice the background if it were different since it is so nicely filled in. I know it is trendy, but I don't see the burlap fitting your style or adding anything to your hutch. However, no harm in playing with some sheets of paper, lol! Something in a damask pattern perhaps?
