Fitted sheets

Hi All,

I was at a warehouse sale.Saw some king size flat sheets for less than $20.They didn't have fitted bottom sheets.Is it possible to convert a flat sheet into a fitted sheet.If so how would I do this.I paid $99 for a cheapo set.

Got a brother NX-600 for Easter.Now I need to learn to sew.

Maybe yes, maybe no. It all depends on the thickness of your mattress and the size of the flat sheet you are working with. See link below. It has good instructions on how to make a fitted sheet and gives detailed information on sizing.

Your mattress should be 80x80 & those flat king sheets should be 108x114. That would give you 28 inches one way & 34" the other. The general rule is the depth of the mattress plus 5-6 inches to tuck under on each size. You would have 14" for this on each side past you 80" on the shortest side. If that is enough, make the other side 108" also. Whater ever you come up with for the sides & tuck under....say 14", go inch below that to 13 & cut a 13" square from each corner. Fold those cut edges together & it makes your boxed corner when you stitch them. I sew elastic from 12" or so past that seam into the side area, all way around the end & past the seam on the other.Then do the same to the other end.

I love dealing with flat sheets for other things too. You gets lots of fabric & have to make few seams. We got a good buy, $6, on industrial perma press king Martex sheets & made curtains for my daughter's whole house over 10 years ago & they are still in use & the nice part is wash & rehang.

You can have all sorts of fun with sheets & your new machine.

Part of the problem is that people assume that their mattress is the standard, advertised size. Like an standard King is supposed to be 76x80 but MANY manufacturers cut their mattresses short, believe it or not. Tempurpedic is notorious for cutting their mattresses short (Saves them money? Who knows.) The point is - the pocket depth being wrong is not the only problem you will have with getting a tight fit and avoiding swimming in bunched-up sheets on your bed. We have a Tempurpedic King mattress that is actually 74.5 inches wide by 79 inches long and 11.5 inches high. The thing to do is to order from custom sheet companies. These sheets are not that much more expensive than many premade sheets and often are higher quality. We ordered fitted sheets to match our existing sheet sets (similar colors) and the prices were quite reasonable. Good companies we found include CozyTown (https://cozytownlinens.com/ Call or read instructions on how to order custom sheets - they want you to choose the general size in the dropdown list then in the comments section tell them the actual mattress measurements). They use only long staple cotton. Their Italian and 300 thread count sheets are really nice and ship fast, while their 500 TC takes a bit longer to order. CustomMattressFactory.com is another company with 600 TC organic cotton that is even less expensive than the former company. But there are a lot of companies doing this sort of customization. We gave up searching for premade sheets to fit the beds and have finally gotten sheets that fit.

Thanks to all for suggestions. I'm not thrilled with straps and hooks especially when the mattress is very heavy. Tucking in excess won't keep the sheets tight because the mattress is supported by smooth cedar wood slats. No gripping power there. While discussing this with my daughter down the street she chimes in, "I have a 10" fitted sheet from college days, it's an Ikea queen with elastic banded perimeter. Perfect fit! I can bounce a quarter 3" off the surface. That's how tight I want it. :) The quality isn't so great but it will do for now. My wife may duplicate this sheet in a higher thread count cotton. At least I won't be entangled until then.

The last three sets I bought did have elastic all the way around. That might not be a bad thing, but what I didn't like is that the elastic is inside a casing, meaning that it is not stitched TO the fabric of the sheet, so I have to adjust the gathers sometimes. I don't like that aspect. I didn't know it was the new thing, thought it was just this brand. The best fitted sheets I had actually had no elastic. They were really "fitted" by seaming in strategic areas at each corner. Of course, that was before we had several different heights of mattresses. A full size was just that, LOL. And yes, the new sheets are a despicable mess when I fold them. I used to be proud of my sheet folding, but not any more.

I have a west window that has sun and I mean Texas Sun.
I was just looking at King size flat sheets in a basket marked down the other day at Walmart. Not the color I needed (my luck) but great thread count and would make great curtains.
