Trying to post a picture of this old lady,. The ship's photographer took it and added the P. Canal around it.

Jodi - I grew up in Panama, on the Atlantic side. We came back when I was 18 and to this day I still miss the place. As you are exiting the Gatun Locks, up on the hill is a lighthouse. We lived in the house sitting in front of that lighthouse... if either are still there, I would love it if you could take a picture.

I feel like I am re-living the original poster's nightmare. Very glad that people have continued to post and lots of great info here. In my case, my tooth was tender to the touch, seemed to have shifted or was a little loose, and the dentist just said, "you want to try to save it right?" He did not offer his opinion on whether the chances were good to save it or not. ASK QUESTIONS - THESE DENTISTS DO KNOW. He had done a root canal for me the year before without problems but this time was so different with the above symptoms. He did not try to get a large area of my mouth numb, did it in stages, caused me panic attacks, aggravated the nerve with the last shot and when I thought he was going to give more pain killer, he started drilling, which for the first minute or two, maybe, was tolerable, then the severe pain started. I am not a screamer, but wish I had let it loose - maybe he would have stopped - I swear it was torture with comments that it would be over after just a little more and a little more and finally just after the filling because he could not even begin a crown prep and had to see if the tooth would rebound. I cried off and on all day! and suffered most of the weekend every time the pain killers wore off alternating between ibuprofen and Tylenol with and without Vicodin. Swelling started on Sunday, got him to call me in an antibiotic but going to travel back to my home town 60 miles away hopefully tomorrow to get my old dentist to pull it. I can't live like this. I did call my old dentist at home in desperation - just needed her to say she would try to work me in. She said a tooth sensitive to the touch like this is considered a "hot tooth" and it is not recommended to try to save it. Hope this helps someone in the future to avoid this type of pain. If I don't stay on top of it with pain medications (now taking Alleve at prescription doses in hopes of a little more time to sleep) I am in severe pain from tooth root through my jaw, TMJ and ear. I hope this saves someone else some suffering!

A view of one of our 'mules' that will pull and guide us through. Two on each side, keeping their cables taut in an attempt to keep the ship from banging the sides. In the other set of locks is a ship carrying autos. You can see (sorta) that there are only inches on either side of the ship. Ours, carrying less than 700 passengers has several feet on each side. Also, we were only have as long at the other ship.A better view of that other ship.Ouch! Try as they might, ships still bump into the sides. On the other end, we hit and bounced and bounced again.

Although the passage through the Panama Canal is a 24 hour operation, there were lots of lights along where the mule worked and several lights. This is the neatest looking one.It can take awhile for the water levels to get to where they should be and workers cannot just stand around. This goes down under the locks and comes up on the other side. That has to be a lot of steps. Oops! Wow, several ships banged into this enough that some work was necessary and it still looked distressed!The gate behind us is closing and our mule has some slack lines. There must have been a bit of a communication problem for we banged into this side shortly after the gate closed.

Kay I used to be a water rat, but don't have anyone to play in the water with. Most women my age wouldn't put on a bathing suit and be seen in public. I wouldn't until I had a chance to swim in the Amazon River, had to do that.

Carol, enjoy your Carnival cruise. I was told by one of the tour companies I travel with that Carnival owns Princess ships. Can you post the URL of your itinerary? Here is the one for my canal cruise.

Jonesy - your pushing Spring for me!! Great shot!

I usually start watching the seconds of more daylight at 5:00 sometime in December. This year I was preoccupied with the kitchen redo and really didn't start paying attention until Friday. I truly get Spring Fever and your pic is ramping it up! It's time to start planning for VAC time!!

Leave Ft. Lauderdale- Thursday
At Sea- Friday
At Sea- Saturday
Panama- Sunday
Limon, Costa R- Monday
At Sea- Tuesday
Belize- Wednesday
At Sea- Thursday
Ft. Lauderdale- Friday
We will dock in Colon, Panama and take tours of the canal, take a train ride across Panama or visit other sites in the area. Carol

Good Morning everyone., thanks for replying. gneegirl, it wasn't spring where I was, the temps were 85 to 96 and the highest humidity I remember was 91. I doubt I would have gone if I had known the temps there. I'm glad I didn't know, it was a wonderful trip. I will post more pictures when I get them edited. I hang my favorite travel photos so I can see them everyday and remember where I've been. I put the pins on my world map yesterday, I thought I had gone to 6 new countries, but it was 8.

Carol, that looks like a very good trip. We didn't stop at Panama, just went through the locks and kept going. You will enjoy the cruise. thanks for sharing your information.

Jonesy, You are very welcome. I am looking forward to the trip. It has been planned for a year and I can't believe it is less than 5 weeks away. A friend of mine, another widow, organizes day trips, and cruises. I went with the group last March, to St. Maarten, St.Lucia and St. Kitts. We had a great time. Hence, another trip this year! Carol
