Jennifer, So good to find there are other "w/o" children scrappers out there. I have a difficult time finding die-cuts, stickers etc that pertain to things I have pictures of. Nothing against child related items, but the majority of kits, books, ideas and supplies are child related and since I don't have any to make scrap books of or for, I'm always searching for help in page layouts for my particular interests. I took an intro class to scrapping last summer and I was the only one who who wasn't doing children's themes pages. Sometimes you feel a little left out of things. Please add me to your list. And I'm also still very new to this so any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for thinking of us still single scrappers. Helen

Ditto. Most of the stickers out there are waaaaaay too cutesey-wootsey childish for me. They're like Precious Moments on acid.

I have had good luck with Susan Branch's stickers, however. The sets often come with frames that are generally floral or a nice pattern.

I'm trying to make my own frames, but since I have a hard time drawing - and cutting - in a straight line, they're often lopsided. Grrrrrrr.

drkona, Your house looks great! I would look for a small chest or console to go on the wall directly in front of you when you come in the front door. Maybe with a mirror hung above it and a lamp and a picture of your kids on the chest. That would make a welcoming entrance. Ballard Designs has a lot of little chests/consoles. re: the closet - definitley use it. Install lower hooks or maybe consider having California Closets or someone come out to put some organizing stuff in there to maximize the space. I like what mclarke posted for that corner by the closet. You could also have someone (handyman, finish carpenter) come and build you a little bench and hooks for that space too. If you can train everyone to use that area, that would be great! Have fun!

Daughter married a person of her choice, they bought a house ... and later broke up (no kids). She has been in several occupations ... and locations. Later introduced to someone by a high schoool pal: they were together for four years or so, but broke up. Now, unbelievably in mid-40s, she has bought a condo in a far-away location. I never had any part in match-making ... never even had anyone in mind that I thought might be a candidate. Son didn't seem much interested in females for years, I never considered attempting to initiate a contact (probably wasn't familiar with relevant potential suitors, anyway). Recently he has found someone with mainly grown offspring ... via internet, it appears. They have been spending time together. During a recent discussion here of raising children, I said that I'd felt that one of my chief tasks as a parent is to help my child prepare him/herself to work toward independence ... and someone referred to it, saying that she too felt it to be an important part of our parental responsibility. That said, if I'd met someone whom I thought that he might find interesting, I might mention to him that I'd met someone that might be of interest - we've developed a fairly informal, straightforward, easy-going relationship. First of all carolyn...welcome to the gardenweb. Your situation is not that uncommon. Happens lots in fact. Can I ask you a question? Why haven't you two married? Twelve years is a long time. You are lucky that most people at the family functions seem to like you. The indirect hostility hasn't gone too far yet, but if ignored it will have far reaching and extremely damaging effects. If you want to read a great book on indirect aggression, read Phyllis Chesler's book, "Womans inhumanity to woman". The fact that you two have not married leaves the ex with the hope that they will reconcile. A marriage is a definitive move. Most times;) I have always been ambivalent about a mother's relationship to her children in so-called being forced to share their affections with another woman, particularly the one living with her ex. I respect parenthood a great deal, and I have never understood the zero sum stance "most" exwives have. I also am an exwife who learned to share my children with a stepmom. Damn, if it wasn't the single hardest thing I had to learn about myself. I had all the normal instincts of wanting my children to love me most. Or, not even that, to love ONLY me as a mother. I could and did think of a bazillion reasons why she was no good. She did the same for me. Then, when their marriage ended in divorce, my ex wanted to drive her out of the lives of our children. Give me a break! They are adults now. They should have the freedom to make their own choices without my interference that may source from envy or vengeance. Who the heck was it, m. scott peck who said life is difficult. "This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult--once we truly understand and accept it--then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters."

That sounds a bit like part of my husband's family. Hubby's father disappeared when Hubby was 12, and left a long and messy trail behind him. Kids #1-4 (including my husband) were with wife #1, my dear MIL. Those four now-adult kids and Mom are very close. Wife #2 left him pretty quickly, but thanks to a good lawyer (her father, the mayor), took pretty much everything he had. Wife #3 stayed around long enough to have three more children, half-sibs #1 - 3. During that same time, a girlfriend gave birth to half-sibling #4, leading eventually to the end of marriage #3. Wives #4 and #5 were past child-bearing age, or there probably would have been more... So in a nutshell - five wives, eight children, three different mothers. He'd always told MIL and Hubby's siblings that he couldn't help them with college because of his alimony and child support obligations to his other wives and children -- which caused resentment. But as we found out later (at his funeral, when we first met three of the four half's), he'd always told them he couldn't help them financially because of his support obligations to wife #1 and kids #1-4! Bottom line -- he didn't support *anyone*. 'Dear Old Grandpa' met our son once, when he was just a few weeks old. To my way of thinking, that was about right. 'Grandpa' was a selfish, bull-headed, arrogant and self-righteous man who'd alienated five different wives and left fatherless kids all over the state. Enough de-railing. But I thought it was important to show you where I'm coming from with my advice, because I know it will sound harsh. In short, BOTH of your parents sound pretty dysfunctional, and a years-long pattern of poor choices does not just magically stop when they became grandparents. Sure, your children have been deprived of loving and devoted grandparents who would offer unconditional love and wise counsel. But that happened MANY years ago (40+) -- not recently. If your parents had truly wised up, they wouldn't be so lop-sided with their time and attention. They'd have contacted you and your sister years ago with sincere apologies, and made much more of an effort to be involved in your lives. But instead, they've allowed themselves to continue to take the easy way out, avoiding those 'messy' situations facing the children they disappointed and walked out on, instead focusing their attention on the kids that are as screwed up as they are... They can count on the 'pot' not to call the kettle black. Bottom line -- even if you could get those two to pay attention to your lovely children, those kids STILL wouldn't have good grandparents! The sad fact is that your parents are STILL very messed up people. My advice? Tell your kids that your parents are messed up people, and that they don't know what they are missing by having so little contact with such wonderful kids. Tell them that in your honest opinion, having them spend more time with either your mother or father is NOT really a good idea. Then if you can, 'adopt' an older couple who would love to have young folks in their lives. Find someone who is sane and stable and loving to do the honors --

I'm married w/o children. I'm tired of all that "kid stuff" also. Sign me up! I stick to flowery, landscape type stuff, stickers, etc. If you like country themes Debbie Mumm has really pretty stuff. Also, I'm taking every single family picture I could get my hands on and am creating heritage albums which start with 1915. I've found some heritage material, but does anybody know of any heritage sites?

Jennifer, what a great idea! My girlfriends and I make an annual trip to the Outer Banks of NC every year. We have so many photos and wanted to start a scrapbook of our experiences. I said we'd have to lock it in a vault to keep others from witnessing the things we get into!

I'm married and I do have a child (two, if you count my husband) but would like to be added to the list. Not all of us parents go for the kid's (or the cutesy) stuff all of the time. At the moment, I'm focused on my card-making and on finishing a (much belated) b-day present (scrapbook) for our two friends we traveled to France with before our son was born. I think this forum would be most helpful. Thanks
