Where Can I Find Sewing Patterns For Lounge Pants & Sweat Pants?

I do not know the first thing about sewing but I thought the people on this forum might be able to help me.

My sister and I both have long legs. We are tired of buying sweat pants, yoga pants, and lounge pants that are too short (or become too short after a couple of washings). So I had an idea that maybe we could find someone who sews and commission them to make us several extra long pair of pants. I was thinking we could buy some fabric and wash and dry it several times BEFORE the pattern is cut from the fabric.

So I guess the first thing my sister and I would have to do is to find some patterns for very casual lounge pants, sweat pants, or yoga pants.

Does anyone know where I can browse some patterns online?

go to your local fabric store (joanne etc.) and look at the pattern books. all the pattern companies have sweat pant patterns (vouge, butterick etc.)

washing your fabric twice should be lots. Also if you have long legs you might want to buy a little extra fabric 1/4 to 1/2 yard should do it.

I have invented my own for kids. and have made myself a skirt with shaping at the hip line and a zipper. You need to choose your yarn, figure out your gauge...decide what style and have at it. You can make them just like sweats with an elastic waist....in which case you just cast on enough for a relazed fit at the hips and knit a ribbing band which will be turned down for elastic, work until you come to the crotch part....as long as you wish....use another pair of pants for a guide....then divite in half and knit the legs....tapering or not as you choose.....when the legs are long enough....make a "turning row"...a row of purl from the knit side...knit another inch....bind off and hem the bottoms. Possibilities for things like a cable down the sides or very tapered cullf or widening cuffs or a rear pocket are all there. Linda C

Thanks to all who offered suggestions. Cynic, is that duct-tape????? That might work in a pinch. I'll have to try it. For some reason, those pocket replacements are really difficult to find in this area. I've ordered four packs, which should keep me supplied for a little while.... Jann

I looked at your link. This is not what I consider a beginner project. The instructions are pretty good, however, and certainly it's a very doable project. A method that I think is easier and less complicated: Threads magazine (#120, September, 2005) had an excellent article about how to use masking tape to copy any garment without taking the garment apart. You can buy that issue, if you want, or you may be able to find the issue at a library. See the link below for a sort of preview of how this works. If you can take the pants apart, that would be even better. Use a seam ripper to disassemble them gently (preserving the seam allowances) and use the pieces as the pattern or to make a pattern. Take note of how these have been sewn together as you take them apart. If these existing pants fit you well, you can also use the pieces as a guide to alter a purchased pants pattern. Adjusting the crotch seam always trips me up, but using a pattern you *know* fits correctly (your existing pants) as a guide would make that easier. A book about constructing pants would probably be helpful, just to give you an idea of the order of construction. I assume that you have sewn before, just not sewn clothing? I don't know that I would choose pants as my first garment project, but that's just me! Depends on how detailed these pants are - darts? waistband? belt loops? pockets? pleats? Aprons spring to mind.....find some themed fabric and a pattern for the old fashioned bib style ones..or go without a pattern and make a fancy ruffled half one. Make a simple square shape one and trim the pocket with a little glitz if you are on a super tight budget. You could also make a couple of potholders (attached with a button to the apron)...hit the dollar store for a couple of things to include - woodenspoon, nylon scrubbers, (just think kitchen)...go to the clearance section of a bookstore and see what inexpensive cookbooks you can pick up - there are some under $5.00 that are very good. Or make the apron and add a homebaked loaf with the recipe card attached. Table runners, placemats, sleep pants......something quick easy and inexpensive is what you want. There are draft catchers for below the doors...patterns available.....snowman themed or cat, dog whatever to fit the lifestyle of the person who will receive them. Slippers? Go check out a pattern book and see what inspires you. That is what I'd do.

You have long legs, I have short legs!
Pre-washing fabric is the first rule in sewing. The second rule is measure 3 times and cut once! Also, try buying some muslin or other cheap fabric to find out how the pattern will fit your body type. Then make modifications from there. (this way you don't spend an arm and a leg on fabric just to find that after you spent all that time making it, it still doesn't fit well.
I like http://www.denverfabrics.com They have great customer service to help you narrow your search. That's "if" you can't get to a fabric store in person to look through all the books. It will save you time to shop on-line though. Once you find a great pattern, make a re-usable template with some stronger pattern paper found in most fabric stores,(not sure if you can get that from the website I gave you or not) it will last longer than the flimsy pattern paper in the package. That way you can use and re-use that template. I have patterns dating back to the 80's that fit great. I just use more current fabrics, and make the odd modification from the original pattern to keep the fashion current. You will have to probably add a few inches to the original pattern. Look for the inseam info on the package and add the extra inches that your inseam measurements require. Hope that helps.

If you happen to have a pair of sweat pants (lounge pants) that fit well it might be worthwhile to take those apart (yes lots of work snippin an rippin out the seams) use them for your pattern.

Pants it the one thing that is very hard to find a pattern that fits correctly I prolly have more trouble than most since I'm so short waisted and most pants patterns have an extra long crotch.

If you feel the need to go buy a pattern Walmart discounts their patterns 50% off every day I think. Buy a pattern that is marked easy or simple less than one hour etc something like that is for beginners just getting started.

To get the stretchy sweat fabric you might have to go some place like JoAnn's or Hancocks that specializes in all types of fabric. Or buy the fabric online like others has suggested.

Preshrinking is VERY important not just the fabric I preshrink all zippers and trims every thing that is goin on a garmet before sewing. Believe me it's worth that step nothing like sewing a beautiful dress only to have the trim shrink 1st time it's washed because you didn't preshrink the trim.
