My budget ~$40K:
Cabs = $16K
Granite = $3.3K
Appliances (Range, Vent, DW, Disposal)= $6.5
Tile = $1k (labor & tile)
Contractor = $14K

We painted ourselves, and did the demo ourselves (contractor supplied dumpster). It was a complet gut-reno down to the studs. Total gutting of the electrical system, but we did not change plumbing.

It totally depends on the scope of the project you're envisioning. Plan for anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of your budget to be labor.

Why don't you be your own GC? You've already engaged the services of some subcontractors, and many GC's that you interview will not like this or want to work with you in this manner with you providing part of the service and them sourcing the rest. Part of the reason of having a GC is for their connections for the products and labor and you just cut $$ from their pocket. Also, there will be a problem with supervision of these trades since the GC did not engage them and cannot realistically be asked to be responsible for quality control or timing of your supplied subs. Given that, it may be just easier for you to plan and supervise the whole job.

your project scope will drive your costs. details below from my project still in planning phase. 11x13 original 1942 kitchen, full gut, no changes to footprint, full rewire and new plumbing to bring up to code, new inset cabinets, honed granite countertops, shaw farmhouse sink, rohl faucet, new stainless steel appliances except fridge, hardwood floors, subway tile backsplash. i was aiming for a 40K budget, am currently ~30% over budget - low to mid 50's depending on final scope (partially my fault, bought a pro range and am picking higher end stuff than originally planned). trying to find ways to reduce. key takeaways:

-plan for the unexpected. i have not even begun construction yet, permits not yet filed and i already have $6000 in unplanned costs (ie 15% over budget just in unplanned costs). $4000 because i need to install a new tankless hot water heater to enable me to remove a venting flue going up the back of a cabinet in the kitchen. Another $1800 to pay a lead abatement company during demo as there is a new lead law that went into effect. make sure to set some money aside for the unplanned... prices below reflect SF Bay area with a good GC firm who is not cheap (still negotiating):

electrical $5,000 (still defining lighting scope, this number under review): full rewire of kitchen with knob and tube to include new panel in garage, 4 20amp dedicated circuits, rough in for all lighting to include pendant lighting, recessed lighting and under cabinet lighting. this number will reduce slightly depending on how many recessed lights i get, install GFCI receptacles and wall plates, install pendant lights, under cabinet lighting, install recessed lights, includes all supplies except pendant lights.

HVAC: $1350 cost to update duct work for vent hood and install boot for heater vent kickplate

insulation: $973 subcontracted so there is a markup on this. negotiating this line item

drywall supplies and labor $730 subcontracted

interior millwork and trim: supplies and labor: $700, need to match original trim which is not standard

tile: 0 am doing myself (he quoted $1000)

painting: 0 am doing myself (he quoted $2000)

granite counterop fabrication including honing, install cabinets and countertops: $7600 i am paying for slab separately. this rate seems high, working to negotiate

hardwood flooring: random plank to match dining room including materials and labor $2813 subcontracted

install appliances: $800

protection: (porta potty, dust and floor protection) $650

cleanup: GC quoted $1382, we are negotiating based on reduced scope.

supervision of subcontractors and job site, inspections: was originally at $4000, currently at $3500, aiming to negotiate to $3000 based on reduced scope.

This GC came in ~10% higher than the other one i talked to but is much better. leaning towards going with him but still checking references and want to get 1 more quote.

kmsparty, do you already have a good idea on what you want to do and what materials you want to use? What is the size of your kitchen? Are you reusing appliances? If no, that's a 5k bite right there for all new stainless appliances. How about plumbing, electrical and structural changes?

If you give specifics, it will be easier for the members here to give advice on what reasonable costs are.

Thanks for the info already given. I thought about being my own GC but getting more workers and coordinating some of the aspects I think would be too much for me on this job. Plus, the kitchen place is doing the schedule for most everyone. They have been referring people that they subcontract and sending them to me for interviewing. I believe if we use one of their referrals, they plan to work together with everyone so they are kind of acting as GC's too.
At this point we plan to reuse the appliances. We are taking down a wall (not load bearing) that divides the kitchen and dining room. Other than running a line for the refridgerator ice maker, there is no major plumbing involved. Some additional electrical mostly for extra plugs and lighting. Putting in a new window and drywall work also.

My budget for my kitchen reno was also $30k. Right now I'm about 90% done, and the total is coming out to $33k -- not too bad --I'm going slightly over budget because I decided to splurge on glass tiles. I served as GC, and hired a bunch of subs for the work. We did an entire gut reno, which included demo-ing the lathe and plaster, bringing down a structural wall, doing quite a bit of re-framing and laying totally new floors, so we had quite a bit of labor costs. Depending on how extensive your renovation is, your labor costs may be more or less. My budget breakdown was:

Floors: $1,900 (including installation)
Cabs: $10,000
Counters: $1,400
Appliances: $5,800
Lighting Fixtures $400
New window: $1,800 (including labor for installation)
Electrical: $2,600
Demo, Framing, drywall, cab installation, painting, patching and repairing ceiling: $3,100
Paint and other supplies: $600
HVAC: $1,500
Plumbing: $800
I think that totals right around $30k... I'm waiting on a couple more invoices that should be a few thousand dollars, bringing my total budget to around $33k.

We did some of the demo ourselves, and some done by one of our subs. We also helped with the floor installation and the cab installation.
