I like the layout. I'd need to know what they'd refect before deciding if mirrors are the way to go or if I'd choose black and white prints or similar art.

I should have included the rest of the room. My husband and his ex-wife bought thousands of oil painting (I would think) and I'm burned out with the art except for family/friends pictures. Here is a living/piano room, I'm still working on it - window treatment, exchange the dresser to a unit where my husband can keep his music sheets and repaint the wall... a long list to do that just never ends!

I think it will be too busy - there's just too much stuff all over the place. Pair down a little and work with bigger pieces.

I agree with yvette. There is already alot going on in the room and the mirrors will magnify that effect.

10 of anything is too much. Whatever you do, make it larger with a fewer number.

I know you said that you were burned out by the art, but you are very fortunate to have larger pieces to work with. Perhaps the overload you are feeling isn't from the art, but from the many tiny collectables and small wall decorations.

If it were me, I would cull 90% of what I had before I committed to mirrors that would magnify the problem. Anything under the size of a sheet of paper would go into a box while I got the bones worked out. After that, you can add back in what you fancy.

I LOVE the idea of mirrors above the piano. However, I also agree that 10 mirrors will reflect what is a very busy room to begin with. For me the rooms pink color, the busy table tops plus the one wall next to your kitchen are creating a visual overload. Adding reflection might bring the room to the brink rather than add the charm I think you're looking for.

One thought if you really want mirrors would be to do less (no more than 5) with each having a different shape and size frame. One might be a larger diamond the next a small circle.

I think you have gotten some great perspective on the space. Here is mine.

I would first turn the piano 180*, so that you aren't running into the butt end when you come into the room from the entryway. It will help that end of the room feel less crowded, and show off the wonderful curve and open top of the piano to those sitting in the room, instead of that part facing the wall.

I would put the couch and chair on square with the room, rather than at the sort of angle. Move the couch down toward the fireplace, and put the chair angled at the end closer to the kitchen, with the round table between them. Square up the rug with those pieces, of course. Put the floor lamp down at the fireplace end of the couch.

Take the kid's terrific pix and your anniversary collection and put those on the wall above the piano. Put the two graduation pix on one end of the wall, down by the bench end of the piano, offset one about half the height of the frame higher than the other. Create another vignette with the anniversary pix down at the other end of the wall near the french doors, with the two scrolled candleholders on either side.

Use the too small mirror over the fireplace to hang above the chest on the little wall. Add a lamp on that chest to bring some light to that side of the room.

Clear off almost all of the items on the top of that partial wall. Pick one subject or collection, perhaps the sailing ships, and limit it to that.

Now use your mirror idea on the wall behind the couch. Put them much closer together, so that they create a grouping. I might be inclined to do three rows of three, rather than two rows of 5. The mirrors will reflect the piano, rather than simply the opposite wall. The black of the frames will balance the visual weight of the black piano, too.

Use the painting on the wall by the staircase (the larger one in the gold frame) over the fireplace.

Group your plants rather than having so many scattered around the room. Move the tree to the corner opposite where it is now on that same wall, so that it snuggles in to the corner, and will sit behind where the couch and chair intersect, at the round table.

Add some color to the couch and chair with some pillows and a throw.

And yes, get rid of the pink walls as you plan to do.

I agree with Les about turning the piano around.

It will look more inviting to anyone entering the room who might want to tickle the ivories, plus, the acoustics will be better by having the lid facing out toward the room, rather than toward the wall. If it's too loud, you can always close the lid.

I think Les gave you some wonderful ideas how to make the most of your space, keep what means the most and showcase it in a fresh and meaningful way. I hope you will consider her suggestions and post some pics of the changes she has suggested.

Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone. Sadly, les917, not all is going to work especially the furniture arrangement! :( The room is 13Â 6" by 18 4". The French doors arenÂt the front entry, its going toward the sunroom, the entrance/entry is the opposite side with the halltree! ha Let me give you the dimensions and see if you can make the arrangement but I can promise you it wonÂt work. I have been struggling and move them around for 10 years and this is far the best I can get.

The graduation pictures wall is 13Â 6"
The tiny oval pictures wall is 2Â 4"
The entrance towards the kitchen is 3Â 6"
The anniversary wall is 4Â 7"
The banister is 4Â 6"
The entrance between banister and the wall is 3' 6"

There are three entrances to this room (what a pain).
The grand piano is 55" wide by 67" deep. It has to stay open for the better sound for he plays it everyday and teaches privately with his students 2 times a week.
The sofa is 90" and the chair is 42" wide.
The round end table is 29" diameter.
The purpose of the dresser is where I keep candles and vases, etc. which I really donÂt have to have it. IÂm looking for a console for the right size to fit on that wall and IÂm having a hard time where now IÂd like to store music sheets/books. I did have it by the piano/stairway wall, it doesnÂt look right and made the entrance too narrow.
The coffee table is 36" square (cannot get rid of if because we display our daughter whom died of SIDS pictures/items in there.
I can get rid of the floor lamp if husband doesnÂt get upset (it was given to him from his favorite aunt) and there is no overhead lighting but those two lamps for the room plus the tiny lamp for the piano which does get pretty dimmed (I just bought the lamp for the round table from Goodwill and going to change the lampshade verily soon)!
WeÂve been talking about putting windows on the graduation wall but have to save $$ first!

I have to agree that there is waaaaay to much going on in this room. Too many small items. It makes me tired just thinking about dusting in that room!

But my biggest question is why are the graduation pictures and candles placed on the wall the way they are? Are they centered on the wall? If you want to keep them there (and I like Les' ideas better), then you should at least center them over the sofa.

Couple of things. First, I think you have received a lot of excellent advice regarding removing the majority of clutter. There is way too much going on.

Second, if you've just celebrated your 25th anniversary, why do you still have the ex-wife's art collection displayed? Did your husband have children with the ex-wife? Perhaps it's time to pass her art collection on to them?

Before you make any decisions about furniture and art placement, you need to edit. Remove all the stuff you have stashed throughout the room. Paint over the pink and purple walls. Then SLOWLY pick a few treasured items to return to the room. The rest needs to find a new location(beer steins in a glass cab in the dining or kitchen?).

There have been several people here who have very artfully brought out their collections in their living rooms. Valinsv and tinker both have wonderful living rooms. Do a search for their names and you'll likely pull up threads with some very inspiring pictures. Good luck!

I know that the french doors aren't the entry - that is why I want you to turn the piano around, so that when you come in the door you see the keyboard, not the butt end of the piano, and so that you can have the piano open and the curve of the soundboard and open side facing into the room, where it belongs.

I will try drawing out your room tonight if I can and see what I can come up with, since you say the suggested arrangement won't work.

But in the meantime, outside of the furniture arrangment, I think you can start removing lots of the small stuff (like up on the top of the wall). I would get to making your framed mirrors, because they can work in the space, whether or not the furniture arrangement can change.
