You can buy asphalt for patching at Home Depot or Lowes so you don't have to buy a large quantity. I used it to patch several holes in my driveway. I agree with Randy427 as to how to do it. I added one other thing; I used a blow torch to melt the patch in so it was smooth with the existing asphalt. Otherwise it will look like a patch. You probably could just let it melt a little in the summer sun and blend it in. It really wasn't hard to do.

"IF" you feel comfortable and are very aware of the consequences of "ONE" misstep, then you could probably do the patch adequately. I would remove all damaged shingles and nails and since it is not that big of an area patching the old nail holes certainly would not hurt. Be very careful when you lift the existing good shingles to nail in the new ones. Be sure to weave the new ones in properly. ONE VERY IMPORTANT detail is to either inspect the whole roof yourself or have a knowledgable professional do it. Look for hidden damage, there is a very high probablity that a lot of the remaining good shingles were lifted up by the wind and the seal was broken, you need to put a spot of tar under each corner of any tab that has been lifted and is loose, or the next time you get just a moderate wind you could loose more shingles. They may or may not reseal themselves

OK, fair enough. Is there reason to believe that the cold patch will bond any less to the old (asphalt) material than it would to stones mixed in as aggregate (which I believe is an excepted practice)? Your point does make a good argument to finish off the top mostly (or all) with new material; to help seal out water and create fewer seams. Thanks

The original post for this thread is almost two months old now... I wonder what the OP chose to do...? It’s an interesting question relevant to a house on our street. They are nearing the end of spending what must be a small fortune to do a very large paver driveway for the house - which was a tear down-and-rebuilt-big-new-house in an older area. It’s a very common situation in our neighbourhood. Two things affect paver driveways here in our climate - freeze-thaw causing unevenness, and weed and tree seeds blowing in and germinating between the paving stones. There is informal betting about how long it’s going to take before the driveway at this house looks a weedy mess! Concrete lasts a bit longer but usually eventually succumbs to cracking from freeze-thaw and is a big job to tear up and replace. Asphalt has the flexibility to cope better with freeze-thaw and so resists weeds a bit better too. When it does need replacing, it is easier, faster, less expensive to replace. Many ‘high end’ new builds in the neighbourhood compromise by using a paver ‘ribbon’ on the sides with asphalt as the main surface. The ‘ribbon’ does get weeds germinating but at least is a smaller square footage to weed! So I think climate and regional tastes make a difference from practical, cost, and resale implications points of view. So, I don’t think there’s a clear ‘winner’ that applies everywhere.
