Question again about mounting hose reel on Dutch Lap siding

I posted before about this- I just got Dutch Lap siding installed on my home. I love it but the contractor did not mount my hose reels where they had been and I didn't know how to mount them on the non-flat surface of the siding. Based on your responses, it sounded like my contractor should have installed mounting blocks for me. Since he didn't, I contacted him and asked why. He said he never does that for hose reels and thinks most contractors don't. He referred me to this product (see link) which he says is designed to be mounted on the surface of the siding after it's installed. Just wondering if anyone has installed something like this and can comment on how easy this is to put on?

If it involves cutting away any of the existing siding I am not comfortable with that. Drilling into it yes, but I am not going to cut it. If this solution won't work I'm curious to hear what others do to store their hoses. I have had terrible luck with the retractable carts that just sit on the ground. In my experience they never work right, are tippy, and also they just don't look good. I really prefer to loop the hose myself around a solid surface mounted to the house. I did try to install the kind that go into the ground and had a LOT of trouble digging down. I think there is maybe concrete or something right below the surface of the area where I'd need it to go. So those won't work.

Just feeling frustrated and a bit lost on how I mount my hoses again. A solution "for dummies" is kind of what I need. Thanks for help and gentle suggestions!

It looks like you mount it on top of the siding with a couple of screws and then attach whatever you want to mount onto it. If you had to cut away siding to install it, there would be no point to the product.

That's my hope too, but I was worried when I found what looked like the identical product on the Home Depot website, where they include a link to installation instructions. I opened the instructions and it says stuff about cutting away the siding. See link to those.

Nice looking mower. Appears to be in good shape, particularly the reel. Appears to have been sharpened with a relief grind in the past. Only the leading edge of the blade is bright, rather than the entire edge. Looks like it could use a back-lapping, however. That being said, let me focus on the engine. First, the Honda GX is a great engine. Your mower is 24 years old, and a new Honda GX would last at least as long. However, the Honda is a serious piece of change. The Briggs 9 CID "Classic" is also a competent engine, and unless abused should have plenty of life left. Here's what I would do: 1) Remove the carburetor, and then separate the tank and carburetor. The long plastic tube is the main pickup, which lifts gasoline from the tank via diaphragm pump and spills it into a small well directly underneath the carb, The second pickup is a casting projecting into the small well in the tank. The long tube has a screen on the bottom, and it must be free and clear. You should be able to blow gently on the tube, On the other hand, if you suck lightly on the tube there will be no flow as one of the flapper valves has closed. The cast tube has a metering jet pressed into ot and it must flow gasoline. I normally use a set of welding tip cleaners to gently ream out the metering jet. 2) While yo have things disassembled, you should replace the diaphragm in the carburetor. You can only do this when the carburetor off of the engine as the muffler is in the way. The diaphragm is inexpensive ($2 to $4) and widely available. 3) Lastly, while the carb and tank are off, I would check intake and exhaust valve clearances. The valve chamber is directly below the intake and exhaust ports and has a cover held by two screws. Proper clearance is .008 intake and .015 exhaust with the piston is 1/4" beyond TDC with both valves closed. Use a feeler gauge to measure. Usually exhaust clearance is OK because Briggs used relatively high quality steel. The intake, however, is little better than a nail and will stretch causing the valve to lose clearance. If clearance is OK, close up the tappet chamber and proceed to reassemble the engine. 4) If you have insufficient clearance in either valve, you will have to remove the cylinder head, and pull the valves out. Additional clearance is obtained by grinding the end of the valve stem. Remember, you can take metal off but not replace it. Grind slowly and measure often. Reinstall the valves, springs, and retainers, and remeasure with a feeler gauge to insure clearance is correct. Now you can reinstall the cylinder head, put the carb back on the tank, and reinstall on the engine. You should now be good to go.

Hi everyone! Don't know what happened to my last version of this posting. I had it all written turned around and it was gone :(. Well my brugs are here at home. The very sweet woman who gave this to me and her equally nice husband who dug up and put into my truck each one of these trees made me feel warm and welcomed. Kristi, the woman who gave this to me even brought out toys for my kids so they wouldn't get bored. Not hand me downs - which are prefectly good in my book too - but new, in the box toys she keeps around for just this kind of event. When greeting with this kind of generosity, a simple thanks does not seem enough but she didn't want anything in return. What I brought home were trees taller than me, taller than the inside of my greenhouse. Well they've been well trimmed now and I have cuttings ready to go. Here's what I have to share: Rosamond Versi Peach - limited amount Mayan Magic Maya Arlene's pink Beauty Golden Lady - nice double - but be warned it has a virus. The virus does not spread easily but you have to clean your pruners before you go near another brug. It's lived side by side with the other brugs with no ill effects and grows nicely anyways. I just want you to be warned. Unnamed seedlings of her own crosses. I didn't get butterfly or the big Creamsickle :(. Someone else beat me to it. You are all so dynamic with your ideas and generosity in assisting me. Thanks to everyone. I am feeling much better than in my original post. In all of my other projects there have been hiccups which turn out to be brilliant in the end. I don't doubt that this will be one. I cherish your outside opinions to shed light on the ideal solution. There are definitely challenges. The kitchen is small, basically 2 parallel walls (10 linear ft/per) with a 3ft. "jog" at the far end for the gas range and built in conv./ micro. **igloochic- great insight in an almost identical scenario. The funny thing ( ) the corner can has been my only "good" cabinet, until of course we has this "minor" misunderstanding. **kitchenredo- I am forbade to use either a chain or table saw after my "accident"- believe me it truly did cross my mind. For mounting exterior fixtures on existing siding. Integrated cut-offs to adapt to all types of siding (including Dutch lap). If you follow my link and click on the first picture you can see the cutouts for siding and this is the description. Good advice to go to a building supply house if you can find one. You also have to know what to ask for because not much is on display. In our area Menards, Lowes and Home Depot are the building supply houses, the others have either retired or changed their setup.

I looked at the instructions. They say nothing about cutting away siding. They do talk about cutting into the product itself as part of mounting a wired electrical fixture, but none of that relates to what you want to do. If you purchase this item and don't feel capable of mounting your hose reel onto this and screwing it to the wall, I suggest you hire a handyman.

Sorry you got a bozo for a contractor.

I have no experience with the type of siding block you want to use. However, I see a couple of potential problems.

First, siding is supposed to _hang_ from their mechanical supports (nails). It is not supposed to be nailed tight. Nailing tight can cause the siding _not_ to contract & expand. Screwing a mounting block to the siding and hanging a hose from the siding could, and probably would cause a problem with contraction/expansion.

Second, you would have to hit solid support with the screws. In other words, putting screws wouldn't cut it just into the siding.

Just get a siding zipper as I mentioned in your other thread, Google it. It's under $10. You will find all sorts of information on YouTube on removing/installing siding.

Install a correct mounting block, or you probably will regret it.

Argh, I am not comfortable cutting the siding away and using a siding zipper. If I wanted to YouTube about installing siding I wouldn't have hired a contractor to do it in the first place. So frustrated.

I see how I read the instructions wrong on that block.... however if you are correct that they installed the siding by nailing it tight it sounds like it still might NOT work. That said, I don't know where you are getting the assumption they installed it incorrectly. I hate to assume that but maybe you can enlighten me???

Just so busy with other parts of life I do not have time to become a pro on this! Stupid contractors. I hate them. All of them I've ever worked with. Now it will be another whole rigamarole with a handyman. Houses are gigantic money and stress pits.

I don't know where you got, that I said they installed it incorrectly.

I said siding is supposed to hang. If you mount a block to the siding, and you mount the block tight, it won't be hanging.

The bozo part of the contractor comes from, leaving it to you to do it yourself.

Roof35 is correct about the siding hanging on the nails, however, I don't see a problem with the hose reel holding the siding tight at one point, it can still move to the right and the left of the reel.

I guess I assumed I'd be drilling the mounting block with long enough screws that it would affix to the sub-surface behind the vinyl siding. Which in my case behind it is T-111 wooden siding.

Really then the stress/weight of the hose reel is on the house structure, not the siding. And as long as it's not pinning the vinyl siding down, all should be well? Right?
