Backsplash Question-Painless I promise, but I need your help
Comments (17)But let me ask you this--which way would the cut size face? Or do we "buff" it to look like it wasn't cut? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Would the corners be mitered? Being that the field tile will be cut into the design, and the rhomboids would be full tiles, I'd think you want to keep the cut edge out toward the field. I know about the bullnose pieces for the sides, but do people use those along the top, where the backsplash hits the cabinet? Does it look more finished? You SHOULD just about have full tile under your cabinets. There should be just about 18" between countertop and bottom of the upper cabinets. In fact, I'd measure and lay some tiles out dry jut to make sure you wouldn't end up with a gap at the top. Either way, though, Just use field tile at the top. Where it goes up by the hood, you ca just continue the field. If you have other places where it'll be open on top, you can simply add a piece of bullnose to the top of the field tile, so that the bullnose extends up past the bottom of the upper cabinets, as shown in the following picture:...See More90 something & finished, need backsplash advice-PICS
Comments (59)Teppy, In my gut I know that I will not do as good a job as you did if I try to paint on my own. You have excellent taste and are very meticulous. Me....not so much. I do have a laundry room I can experiment with if I need to. I am definitely going to get a quote from a painting company, think I found one, that paints woodwork, cabinet and such. They do a lot of work for builders and had excellent pictures online. I have to get an exterior quote as well. When I get closer to actually beginning I'll post before pictures. I tried previously but couldn't figure it out. Maybe I'll take a look again this weekend. Yes, there is enough room for walking if the seating is added. It would be so nice for entertaining, cooking with the kids, kids doing homework etc. We have an eating nook that accomodates only a 48" round table comfortablly so the extra space would be nice plus it's just more social. I want to compare the painting cost vs. refacing. I'm actually hoping it's not that different because then the KD w/the refacing company could be the GC for the whole job whereas if we go the painting route I'll have find a GC on my own. Will defenitely try to figure out the picture deal so I can post. Thanks for the responses. Z....See MoreVertical Backsplash? A Backsplash Regret?
Comments (28)I can see why it might be advisable to remove the left/rt portions of tile, but I would be inclined to wait until ithe kitchen is completed before deciding. If, as your gut tells you, it "needs" to come down, nothing is really lost except a little more time with it up. Perhaps knowing you are not "locked-in" or committed to it, will help give the perspective to view it more objectively while deciding for sure. This way you will not only have the chance to see it with everything else in place, but you will also have the opportunity to get used to it, before deciding if you truly dislike it, or just haven't gotten used to it being there. As subtle (in color) as our tile is, after months of looking at white painted Sheetrock, it still looked "different" and stood out when we looked at our kitchen. Once we became accustomed to it, we couldn't imagine our walls without it. That's how I am with many things--after living with a blank wall or empty space for any period of time, even a long awaited piece of furniture or decor item jumps out at me, and almost seems like too much, until I get used to the vacant space being filled. Thanks for the compliments on our backsplash Laura and andreak100! It's the Opera Glass tile from Artistic Tile (Stilatto pattern) in Wolfgang White. It does read greenish-blue(-grey) in certain lights or times of day. We had to think about that one while deciding if we wanted to use it, and obviously decided to go for it! Good luck Laura! Honestly, whatever you decide will look terrific!...See MoreNo backsplash on window wall? Rhome410? Anyone else?
Comments (15)Thanks Ellendi, for the suggestion. I'd thought about a pencil liner or something like that. Wow, Gigi! Your kitchen is gorgeous! You are giving me some serious window envy, and the windows aren't even the most impressive part of that kitchen. Nice job! Abbycat, I can see why that is your favorite. It looks like a magazine shot. Thanks Rhome410, for showing me the options you considered - that's very helpful! I tried to search old backsplash threads but didn't come up with yours. I'll have a 4.5" space and thought of doing a backsplash that high there, but that's not my favorite look. I also thought about the granite under the window like Provolone's (thanks for the link because I missed that kitchen) but I don't really love that for my kitchen. I thought range wall backsplash height would look odd. I also thought about a 4.5" high piece of granite all the way around, but that reminds me too much of the cheesy formica backsplashes I've been ripping out of kitchens for the last two decades. I also have to watch it because anything too thick might keep my little drawer in the corner from opening. I like the option you chose, by the way. I was looking at mine thinking that about 14" high might look right - but I have no idea why! The granite is going in Thursday, and I'm planning to wait until it and the upper cabinets are installed before making a decision. If I want my builder to put in the backsplash (and his tile guy is excellent) I have to make a pretty quick decision after that. I'm hoping it will be obvious to me that I need a backsplash on that wall or that it's nicer without it. Then there's the decision of exactly which tile I want......See Morejulieste
