Sewing Machine Covers: BEST Fabric?

Just found a 1911 Singer treadle and do not want to drop the machine into the cabinet and flip the lid after each use. Have always relied on a yard of 'joyful' fabric to cover my assorted machines. Came across a medium weight piece of linen and thought it might be a great fabric that I could use for all the machines and decorate with some crazy quilted patches.

Is there a "best" fabric for machine covers? No problem with moisture in my two sewing areas. For me, it is convenient to leave all my machines uncovered and ready for work. Is a natural fiber better than a synthetic? Recall someone saying plastic is the worst. Could probably round up enough homemade 'boiled wool' if you advise.

Thanks. cj
