Does anyone sew their own bras?

Okay first of all I am a guy. But I am pretty crafty, and I am a quick study. My mom used to be a pattern designer/seamstress so I grew up around the sewing machine and have done simple projects in my youth.

I have been married about 9 months and watched how difficult it is for my wife to find a bra that fits, is comfortable and is somewhat stylish. She is quite chesty (42DDD) and I believe right now there is only one store, and one brand that will even work for her.

So I have decided to try and take up sewing to make them for her. If I can do it, I will probably make her some clothing, blouses, slacks etc for work.

Is what I am talking about undertaking something that should only be attempted by an expert... or if I get a decent pattern could I pull it off? Is there anyone out there who has actually done it, and can rate the difficulty for me?

I think more important than whether or not you can make her bras,is the fact that you will have a hard time finding patterns and the supplies to make them.It's not something a lot of people make,and therefore the pickings,so to speak are almost non existant.Do a google search for bra patterns and supplies to make them.That will be a good start for you.Good luck

Hi There is some people that makes bras..you would be surprised go to patternreview.com and join and post your question..there are a lot of bra makers there and they can direct you as to where to find fabrics patterns etc..

I buy some of the tablecloths(one for the table and an extra for napkins) at the dollar store that are a loose weave. I cut a piece the size that I want for napkins plus an inch in all directions. I run a line of fine stitches an inch in from the edge and then pull the threads to make a fringed edge all the way around. It is a mindless task that can be done while talking on phone or playing with GK's....in fact, the oldest GD likes to help!!! If I am making napkins out of a nice linen, I cut them an inch and 1/4 larger than I want the finished product. Fold in the 1 1/4inch to make about a one inch hem with a mitered corner. I then stitch the hem with a line of straight stitches...after it is pressed, I often go back and stitch over the line with a fancy stitch, a satin stitch or couch in a colored embroidery floss to add a touch of color.

I haven't made any for a long time so don't remember what I used except orrisroot. I have a couple of articles that give ideas tho.(I'm trying to organize my craft patterns & ideas into large notebooks )Victoria magazine Dec. 1991 page 116 has Christmas potpourri-2 cups dried cedar tips, 1 1/2 c. bay leaves, 3/4 c.dried orange rind, 1/2 c.cinnamon pieces or chips, 1/4 c. rose hips,2 dried orange slices, 2 pomegranates, 2 pomegranate stars, 2 doz. assorted pinecones of all sizes, 2 Tbs. orrisroot chips or cellulose chips,10 drops cinnamon oil,5 drops bergamot oil,1 drop pine oil. Gild some pinecones, bay leaves & 1 pomegranate with a good gold color paint, let dry, Mix orrisroot & oils in small container. Place remaining ingredients in another container with a tight fitting lid. Add the orrisroot/oil mixture to it cover & put in dark cool place, shake occasionally for 2 or 3 weeks. Place in pretty bowl. To make the dried orange slices Cut juice oranges thinly & place on rack in a single layer put in oven at 200degrees with door ajar. Bake until they are thoroughly dry to the touch. About 12 hrs.or dry slices in a dehydrator. Victoria 1987/88 winter magazine suggests making nosegays(sachets) of dried flowers, I dry roses & buds from mini roses, fragrant herbs & cinnamon sticks. I think huggybear made sachets of lavender, don't know if she had anything else in them or not. Look at Dec. 2008 stuff down at bottom here & you should come across her beautiful ones. Another article I have suggests tea leaves, garden herbs like cinnamon, whole allspice, whole cloves, rosemary, thyme,vanilla bean ,lemon balm, adding fragrance oils,such as rose, lavender,orange, better pharmacies & health food stores are places to get the oils, not same as extracts-much stronger & keep away from kids-could be very dangerous(bro. was saved by having had ice cream before he climbed in stove & got mom's peppermint oil. He reeked for quite awhile. ice cream coated his throat & stomach. Dried apples have been popular in recent yrs also but some of this stuff is strictly for a fancy bowl of potpourri & some could be used as sachets, I had article on making your own lotions & sachets & bath salts etc, but I can't find it . update on the plan! Shannon- thanks- I love Candice too! If I weren't using a solid color sheer in the center of the door I would definetly consider doing a solid vertical stripe up edges. The fabric on these panels will never be closed completely. Tam184- The seamstress asked me to describe the pattern and I spoke with her about "matching the repeat" (all new terms for me!) so I am assuming she knows how to do this. She said she would come out to the house and measure the door herself because I was a novice with giving her concrete measurements for sewing. Ajsmama- This is a local women here in Florida that the fabric store recommended. They gave me 2 names and warned me that one was a little bit more expensive, but that both were very good. As I said before, I live in a pretty small town. I have a feeling prices vary depending on where you live. Have you checked locally? I bought the fabric yesterday. After all of this information ( thank you all a million times over) I have decided to have them sewn professionally. The fabric was pretty expensive for my budget, and I don't want to risk ruining it. It will mean waiting a bit longer, but I have been in the house for 6 years without curtains for the door, so what's another month or two! I would rather wait to save up to have it done properly. When we were kids my mom always blamed "Yehudi" for weird things that happened. The only gremlin in my sewing room is me...LOL...great timing for the question! Here's my story: I volunteered to quilt two group baby/toddler quilts. Lots of ladies made the blocks and sent them to the piecer. Someone volunteered to make the bindings and mailed them to me, another gal volunteered to make the backings and send them to me, then the piecer sent the tops when they were done. Now, I distinctly remember the bindings...there were 2 neat rolls of binding together in one baggie. Last weekend I got ready to quilt the first one, since I had received the tops a few days before (the binding and backings had come a few weeks previously). I opened the baggie with the backings, and only one was there! So I emailed the lady who sent them - asked if she only sent one - were they in 2 packages and maybe the PO lost one? She thought she sent both; made 2 trips to fabric stores to buy more fabric, and express mailed it to me. Yesterday I was sewing the binding on the first quilt. I thought there was no way it was long enough for 2 quilts, but I couldn't find any more in my closet. Thought I remembered 2 rolls of binding...I started searching in the sewing closet when out of the corner of my eye, on the top shelf, behind some other tops, I spot bright blue fabric! ARRRGH! It was the original second backing, and inside that baggie was the second binding! I was so embarrassed to have to confess that! I guess I could try to blame it on a gremlin, but maybe I'll just use the blonde excuse (again). DUH. Donna

I tried it & was unhappy with the fit. I wear a 38DD & wear underwires. In the end, I spent a lot of money for something I didn't use. It was not a cheap project to undertake. It was very time consuming. Besides using a pattern, I tried taking one that fit apart to use as a pattern & to use the supplies I purchased. When I go buy, unless I buy a known style, I can try on a dozen & come up with a couple the fit proper. There is no way of knowing that what you make from a 42DDD pattern will work for her after you spend your money & time making it.

I have thought about doing it and found that is just easier buying them. I have made panties,slip and console. You can get some pieces in Walmart in the sewing section. hooks etc. check this out. these will give you some idea. Patterns are diff than store bought items. copy and paste in your top address bar.

Check your library for the book "Sewing lingerie that fits: stylish underwear, sleepwear, and loungewear for everyday living" by Karen Morris. Seems like it had quite a bit of detail on fitting bras.

Thanks for everyones input. My local Joann's sells a complete line of "hardware" for bras which is sort of what gave me the idea that it could be done. I have found a source online for patterns in her size as well.

I will definitely check out that book. And cost really isn't an issue. With only one store, and one style that she finds suitable, not that there aren't other stores who carry lines in her size, she doesn't really have allot of options. So even if it cost me 2-3 times retail to make one, as long as it fit better, and she liked it better then what she could get commercially I would be happy to spend it.

Let me look through my books later on.I at one time took a course on making your own lingerie.I used to make my own slips(almost impossible to buy a decent one of those these days without spending a fortune,from what i hear)made my own panties etc also. Anyway if i still have the book,i'd be happy to pass it on to you as i know i'll never use it again.I'm just not positive i still have it,but i promise to look.If it's still here i'll post to this thread and let you know.

Check out the Bramakers manual. I've heard a lot of good things about this book. (Not affiliated). Sold by bramakerssupply.com. Beverly also has a blog in which she writes about bra making. I think it is bramakers.blogspot.com

There's also another book by Lee Ann Burgess. Making beautiful bras - she also has a video to accompany it. You can buy it from her directly from Australia. She has a website too, but I dont remember it right now.

Bras are time consuming to make mom and I tried it years ago after making a few decided it was easier to buy bras BUT we not that hard to fit for us it's easier to adjust the store bought bras. I usually have to take up the shoulder straps many bras won't tighten as tight as I need them love the bra hate the strap type of thing.

Quick Sew patterns are easy to follow come with many sizes on the pattern to be traced off before using they do have at least 1 bra pattern.

I'm sure my DD would be greatful if I'd make her some bras for while she is preggers hell of a time buying bras when you grow to about a 38M when preggers and change bra size about every 2 to 3 weeks.

I have made them but the supplies are so expensive that it isn't practical unless it is impossible to buy one. I would check out the bra section of Just My Size. They have a web site and a free catalog. Prices are fair.
