New School problems for 11 year old

I have 3 children ages 7,9, and 11. We transferred our children to a new smaller school this year. We thought that the smaller school size would be beneficial for our children. The 7 year old boy and 9 year old girl are adjusting well. Our 11 year old girl isn't doing as well. She has just 8 girls in her class and unfortunately many of them have strong personalities and have bullying tendencies. My daughter has made one friend, but other than that she feels left out allot. She cries at night and wants to go back to her old school. She is shy and sensitive and very sweet. I hate to see her so unhappy. I am ready to just transfer her back to her old school. Her father wants to wait and try and work through this. Her teacher and counselor at school have been supportive also. I have tended to coddle her in the past and try to help (maybe too much) because she has low self esteem. I just don't know what the right thing to do is. I love my girl so much and hate to see her unhappy.

I'm not going to even try to give you advice on what to do. That is something you will need to figure out on your own. One can't know all of the details you didn't mention. But, I feel from your quest for help that you love your daughter so much and you may feel you do too much for her...(I, too have been guilty of that). I think, perhaps, the real problem may be her low self esteem. I know that I would want to transfer my daughter back....just like you....but, would that solve the underlying problem of lack of self esteem? Think about it and good luck with you difficult decision.

11 is a really tough age to change schools. Why did you move them (other than the new school is smaller?) I imagine you had a really good reason to do it.

Are there any after school activities at this school? My daughter had to change schools after kindergarten because her school closed -- she joined Brownies at her new school in the first grade. It was the best thing -- she met tons of first grade girls including ones not in her class. It really helped with going into second grade this year.

I have repeatedly in the past pointed out that "hot topics" be discussed in the *Hot topics Forum* only to be blindsided with mockery from all sides. Since it seems that 'consensus rules' here, I guess I can learn to 'go with the flow' and join in with the postings. Why fight it right? "And this link solicited no negative comments about the information being too horrible to be posted here. Why is that?" I think people realized that I had made my point. ------ All the links the OP posted, went to stories about how a mob beat a guy rather than just calling the police with a suspicion that he was in the neighborhood walking down the street. They could have called 911 and if they "wanted to help" then followed him and kept a good eye on him until the police arrived in a few minutes to apprehend him. Another innocent man was savagely beaten the same day by those who thought they had the right guy. Today is another day and thousands of children will be raped today. None of them will get a party and a parade, or be awarded a "princess plaque". None of them have a "Little Angel Fund" set up by Bank of America. Those kids need solace just as much as this girl does and there is no one to give it to them.

I think Haley is right, a 6 year old shouldn't be unsupervised when getting ready for school. I don't think she meant he should be dressed by his mother, only she should be there and awake waiting with him, making his breakfast and making sure he gets on the bus. If not for the prior problems I would give the mother the benefit of the doubt on not waking up, once. I still get my kids up and when I am home I stay awake till they get on the bus. They're older now but when they were younger they went to the neighbor's house on days I had to work or go to school so an adult supervised them. I still call most days when I'm at work to make sure they are doing ok and made it home from school. It's just not normal to leave a 6 year old to fend for himself.

Old school phone jack problem

Hey everyone: it's a miracle! ;-) Yesterday I had tried several times to get the base and phone cord to plug in behind our television in this outlet and jack: I just now took the old slimline phone and plugged it into that jack--and got a dial tone! So I got the V-tech and tried again. Again got a "No power at base" message as I had yesterday. I unplugged the phone, thinking to try plugging it in elsewhere--but first I plugged it in again because I KNOW that outlet works. This time the phone lit up as it should and I got a dial tone. So the old slimline phone is back on the kitchen wall where it had been and I'm just going to leave it there. I don't particularly like the V-tech next to the TV, but I don't much like phones anywhere. (You notice in those HGTV shows, they almost never have a TV or phone in a redesigned room.) All I can think is that the cable guy gave us a bonus by keeping that jack free while he connected the modem. Thanks for all the help!

I'd get the bedding first, then select a pink that works with the bedding. When doing children's rooms, give them the illusion that they are choosing the color. YOU select three or four pinks that you like, then present them to her to pick from. This way you are happy with any of them, and she thinks that she picked it out herself. ;) Paint all the walls in pink, get new wall-to-wall carpeting (it works great in kids' rooms). Then add any and all Barbie accessories that she likes. When she tires of Barbie, just replace the accessories. I did this with my daughter when she was about 5 years old. She wanted purple, and her furniture was white, like your daughter's. My husband said oh no, not purple. My answer was it's her room, let her have what she wants. I think she had Rainbow Brite bedding (!) or some Laura Ashley, but whatever, we did the room in Ben Moore's Lily Lavender and she LOVED it. As she grew, we changed out the bedding but kept the lavender walls. It was only a few years ago, after she moved out that we redid the room completely.

Recently heard this question asked on the Dr. Laura radio program. She said to invite all the girls over to your home and let them get to know your daughter. You can plan a craft that girls their age would enjoy and some refreshments. Also something to get them laughing like telling jokes from a book (or any other ideas you have). This will make everyone more comfortable and your daughter will feel better and start new friendships. Like to know how it turns out.
