Help pull it all together!

My husband and I have spent the last 7 months working on our house and in his opinion, it's finally done. However, I am struggling to pull everything together. I want my "grown up" house and just can't seem to get there. I think we need new lighting, curtains and maybe a new table. Art would be nice but I have no idea where to start. Is hiring a designer what I need to do to accomplish that look of a finished room? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think I would replace the chandy over the table. The one you have over the sink is really nice and more contemporary. Maybe replace the table chandy with matching, but obviously larger, chandy as the sink's, or at least a different style but more contemporary.

If affordable, I'd 86 the overhead light and replace with recessed lighting throughout the ceiling.

Maybe put a little bookcase up against the end of the island, to hold cookbooks, knickknacks,etc.

Hate to say this, because my guess is it's new, but the rug under the table is too small. If you can, I'd put a larger rug under there, and have four chairs on the sides, and one on each end.

Some kind of colorful window treatment to bring some color into the room?

Add hardware to the cabs?

Oh, well, I totally understand that. In that case, I would definitely get a ready made and not take on project of making something now. You can always do that later and not waste much $$ if you stay in the same color family. I like the idea someone mentioned above of a toile in a softer gray than the black. Or maybe in the short term just a pretty, fresh new white one and paint the walls a soft gray like mentioned above. Good luck with the bathroom and the baby! Yes, he is licensed and insured and I met with him today to discuss all of these concerns. According to the contractor, the shower has been properly waterproofed. A moisture barrier was installed behind the wonderboard and all joints and corners were filled with polymer-modified bonding mortar over the joints and corners. That being said, I took a trip to the tile store to explore my options. The lady suggested using the basketweave on the bathroom floor, but my husband doesn't like that idea. Option 2 would be to get rid of the basketweave all together and pick out a tile for the floor that has a matching 2x2 that could be used on the shower floor as well. Unfortunately, she didn't have many options aside from a porcelain Carrara looking tile, but the gray was all wrong up against my subway. It didn't go at all. Do you guys think porcelain Carrara looking tile would work up against the real Carrara marble threshold? Or is there another style that would work better? I just had a baby (and I have 2 toddlers) so it's very difficult bouncing around from tile store to tile store. I'm hoping to get an idea of what I'm looking for and then go. Yes Slate is ugly, very uneven and very cold in basement so we will just cover it up with wall to wall carpet. The room is 14x24 so long and skinny. We haven’t bought any furniture yet. Waiting until after contractor takes out the board on wall and retry walls/ paints, puts in 2 six panel doors, puts in recessed lights, new fixtures, and a faux rock wall. faux rock wall used on a lot of tv shoes like extreme home makeover, man cave etc. Will attach photo of sample wall in same material

Our doors arrived with black hinges. Generally you're able to specify the finish for hinges. Was this not an option? As Alison said, pictures would help a lot, of both your kitchen and also the light fixtures and pulls you're considering. Especially since I'm not quite clear on what this -- "My style is traditional with a tidbit of county" -- look like. I had planned on oil rubbed lighting, cabinet pulls, and plumbing fixtures. Some of the better ORB finishes are darker and look almost matte black to the eye. My cabinets are cream colored and the appliances are going to be stainless steal. When I realized our sink would be stainless steal too, I thought the ORB faucet would look funny with all the SS, but then again won't the SS faucet look funny with the ORB pulls? I would choose a stainless steel faucet. No, it wouldn't look funny with ORB pulls because stainless steel or chrome tends to be the default for faucets. People expect the kitchen faucet to be something like stainless steel or chrome. ORB tends to read as trendy, and in your kitchen with all the other ORB elements, it could also look a bit too matchy-matchy.

Oh my gosh, thank you Tibbrix for confirming rug size too small. I kept asking kiddos what they thought. :) Will a bigger rug make the rest of the room look too small? Should I change the color of the table???

I found a picture of a light for above the table. Is this what you were thinking?

A larger rug won't make the room look too small, but the too-small rug makes the table look huge and like it's struggling to stay on the rug. Also, you want a rug under a dining table such that, when chairs are pulled out for seating, they are still on the rug.

That chandy looks too small. I'd spend some time looking at chandeliers and see if you don't find one that you "know" is the right one the second you see it. Personally, I'd try to find one that doesn't require the chain for hanging, but that's just my personal taste. I think they look very 1960s/macrame-ish.
