How do you pick a starting point for an album?

I have just completed a small album, my first. This one had a definate beginning point and ending point. Now I am hooked by the scrapping bug and am wondering how to start on the 18 years of family photos. I like things in chronological order, but have these ideas for pages in my mind that start with more recent photos or combine several years in one theme. In the first album, I did not use mounting paper on the pages, just matted the photos (or not) and attached to the page. I have wondered about creating pages on mounting paper and then later placing the pages in the album. I have been told to do a family album and one for each of the kids. I have enough albums to do this, but am stuck on a starting point. All my photos (except for the past month) are already in pocket albums and my negatives are in archival holders so that monster has been tamed. Any thoughts to share?

I am starting with my wedding. I also like to do things in order. So I put all my photos in order, and started with the wedding which to me is the beginning of my family. I have 16 years to go including 2 children, 11 and 9. This is a very time consuming way of doing it, but I couldn't see starting in the middle somewhere. Hope this helps.

I use the "divide and conquer" method. I also place things in chronological order but in their own albums. I have themed books, one for Christmas, one for weddings, one for SCUBA diving, one for everyday life, etc. This way I don't get overwhelmed by trying to get everything precisely as it happened from the beginning. It also, allows you to share the albums with someone that might want to see the pics from a dive trip but not want to have to look at the wedding I attended the week prior to the trip. PLUS you can change themes when you are tired of working on one. You can start anywhere you like, do some current then drop back and do some older ones. This works for me and I like the results. larry gene is certainly right about picking with two hands. I won't let lazy one-handed pickers near my vines as they'll do too much damage. Best to take a bowl or basket into the garden, to drop the pods into, so you always have both hands free. It can be surprisingly tricky to get the pods at just the right time. Even small shelled peas taste good although you will get more food if you let them get bigger. Better too small than too big in my opinion though, as the bigger ones get starchy and don't taste very good. You'll be really good at spotting the pods at the perfect stage at about the time the peas stop producing... ;-)

I don't know whether this is a real post or a come-on from the photographer, and I didn't go to the web site. But the reference to thank you notes caught my attention. Are you ordering stationery with your picture on it? I would skip that. I assume they are expensive, and frankly, I think I would find it a little odd to receive. Would you put your photo on your stationery any other time? Probably not -- it seems a little narcissistic -- so I wouldn't do it for a wedding, either. Maybe especially not for thank you notes; the focus should be on the giver of the gift, not the recipient. Just use regular, nice stationery (not with "thank you" printed on it, either; you're going to write that inside). Save yourselves some money while making it even nicer than if you'd spent more -- how often can you do that?

I am confused by chijim's comments because all of the pictures that are on the walls now are black and whites and are framed in black. I think that does tie them together. I am not focused on anything on any flat surface at the moment. That is a bunch of stuff from different rooms, or is cat food to be honest, because that is where the sick cats eat. At my DR table. I never actually eat there. :) I have just been working on the wall color, drapes, and wall picture layout. At least that is what my focus was meant to be with this thread, and trying to see if the rug I have will work with it all. I feel like it is coming together in my head. We shall see what the end result is. ;) No worries Punamytsike. I don't mind the comments. It helps to hear other opinions. I can't wait to see what you do with your new spaces which will be so different from your last house. I know it will be fabulous. I think it is interesting that Chijim mentions crown molding. I have to say I was really against it, but DH voted for it, and my parents brought it up yesterday too, so I guess that is a battle I am going to lose. I just think it will bother me to have painted molding when all the other trim in the house is stained. Of course my dad said I should just paint all the trim, but the stained trim has grown on me and I don't really want to do that. If I had my way I would probably do some kind of stained funky trim, but I am sure that would not get many votes either. I think I have convinced DH to do this room next, and he just finished tiling my bathroom, so hopefully we shall see some progress soon. I will keep posting updates in case anyone is interested. It helps me to type out my thoughts too. I know orange/blue is not everyone's cup of tea, and I guess I have a quirky style.

I've been eating apples right off the tree my entire life. For the past thirty years I've been living in a major apple growing area of Southern British Columbia here in Canada. When apples have a nice blush to them (besides fruit falling from the tree) that is the first sign they are ready for picking. Taste your fruit when they appear to be ripe, when you like what you are eating pick your fruit. Fruit on the tree will eventually ripen to the point of being mealy so don't leave the fruit hanging too long. As for those Coddling Moths try hanging sticky yellow cards in your trees. Yellow cards attract flying insects such as aphids and all sorts of other flying insects that can damage fruit and even ruin the tree over time. Here in Canada orchardists have been combating Coddling Moth by releasing sterile moths that help to reduce the overall population. Apple trees are lime lovers. They thrive in sweet soil. Add as much as two kilos of hydrated or dolomite lime as a top dressing around each tree right out to their drip lines. Another given with apples is water. Obviously with water restrictions in much of Australia watering your apple tree may be out of the question however with sufficient watering fruit will be bigger, juicier, with enough sunshine add wonderful sweetness! Oh yes! Don't forget, 'An Apple a Day . . . !'

I don't have 16 or 20 years of photos to so, but my first album was for my first daughter's first two years (because that's when I started.) I couldn't decide how to organize them, either, so I did a variation on the ABC album. I picked pictures I wanted to put in the scrapbook and sorted them into 26 envelopes each having a different letter of the alphabet, writing on the front of each an idea or "theme" for each of the pictures that started with that letter. Clear as mud? :) i.e. for the "A" enveolpe I had pictures of aunts and uncles, alligators (for our trip to an alligator farm), "B" had birthdays, blowing bubbles, bathtime, "C" had Christmas, cousins, and so on. I made sure I included the letter on the page and all the captions or theme for the page centered on that letter.

I didn't stick with just one page for each letter like the traditional ABC albums, rather had as many pages for each letter as I wanted with as many pictures as I wanted. That way I had the best of both worlds. I was able to organize them into a theme for the whole album and I could also organize them into chronological order within the certain letter.

I also put die cuts, stickers, etc. in the envelope if there were particular ones I wanted to use. Some pages had several different pics if I had a single picture of a few things and didn't want to do a whole page for each. For example there was a mixed "S" page because I had several small single pictures that I could title with an "S" word but didn't want to do separate pages. There's "S" is for sandbox, stories with Daddy, "Soooooooo big!" and sliding and swinging in Savannah, GA. all on one page. It's a simple page, but it looks very pretty. All in shades of blue. I was able to experiment with different techniques and styles with this type of album, too. It was a great way to do it. As always, of course, some pages turned out better than others, but I love how it turned out on the whole.

All of these ideas sound great! I recently did a BUNCH of gift albums for Christmas of my brother's lives growing up and started each album with a family tree, and then their earliest baby photos and then went in age from there. In shots where there were more than one family member I decided who in the photo stood out the most and it went in their album ( I had 4 brothers) if the shot was important enough for all of us to want or need a copy I made reprints.
IF I ever get caught up I will probably keep adding to their albums as the years go by, and to my own as we each take photos of each other. The plus side to this is if one house should ever burn down (this happened to my mom), there are still photos of each of us somewhere. A little off topic but an answer. Penny
