How Do I Know When to Start Picking My Peas?

Hi. I planted Oregon Pioneer shelling peas about a month ago, and am wondering how to tell when the pods are ripe enough to pick.

Do they come off easily when pulled, like tomatoes? Or is it by the color, or shape?

Thanks!

I'm in Grants Pass, by the way...if that helps as far as the season and climate.

Shelling peas should have fully developed seeds and look quite plump. If they start to get whiter in color and shrivel they are over the hill, but could still be eaten.

Snap peas have edible (non-fibrous) pods and can be eaten at any stage, and are great raw in salads.

Snow peas like the peas in stir fries are usually picked when the pods are large but before the seeds start to develope, though I like to let the seeds develope anyway like snap peas.

The pods do not come off easily, it requires both hands to pick a pod. If you just grab the pod and yank, you will end up with much of the vine, possibly with roots attached! Hold the top of the pod stem and pinch/tear the pod off with the other hand, or use scissors.

Only experience with opening the pods will teach you the optimum time. Impatience = small peas.

History contradicts your belief in soil testing? How does history contradict a belief in soil testing? That sentence is an example of making up something that sounds intelligent but has no basis in fact. Soil testing is an extremely important part of all the crops growing in this country. If we had a better understanding of soil science earlier in the 20th century then the dust bowl probably wouldn't have happened, or at least it wouldn't have been so bad. Turfgrass, like any crop, has its ideal soil conditions. The closer you can get to the ideal, the healthier the grass. How would you know if you need lime? Let's say you need lime, which one would you use? What about a phosphorus deficiency. Most fertilizers have little P, so are you supposed to guess if you have deficiencies? Andy's plan is the right way to do it. Sure you can do a renovation by omitting steps, but if you want the best results you will do it the right way. Rushing it will usually result in doing it again next fall.

Venture, each one of the flowers are fruits,when the flowers buds fall you'll see tiny rock hard round fruits.They come generally in clusters.And some of the fruits will fall off by themselves at an early and tiny stage...this is nature aborting one to many in a cluster.Don't be alarmed by this just gather the ones that have fallen and throw them away. The ones that stay on your tree will only be stronger and bigger because of this. Meyers are good producers,and will fruit twice a year for you.I just picked around 20 ripe fruit off mine last week,and still theres at least 20 more.This is the same with thing to look for with all your other citris in way of fruiting.You should be enjoying the scent of the flower buds also.Citris are wonderful in many ways to grow.....Good growing to you.***Suzanne

Southern peas are picked when the shells become plimp but well before they dry. You usually do get a few that will become snaps. As recommended previously, cook with either ham, ham hocks, smoked bacon, fatback, or preferably salt pork or country ham. Salt and cook with water until done. They are great with fresh sliced tomatoes, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, pork chops or ham with raw onion cut up in them or with stewed tomatoes and rice along with a piece of cornbread and fresh cream still corn washed down with tons of really sweet tea or leamonade or moonshine with coke. Oh how I miss sitting down with my parents and siblings and eating this. We also sometimes put fresh young okra pods in with the peas near the time they are about done and suck those slick tasty pods down our gullets. Oh the good old days. Linda

You're bragging! MIne are stalled at a very small state...Pick them when they taste good. There's nothing better than munching on a fresh pea when you are working in the garden. Unless it's a just-picked, perfect, red strawberry. Or a sun-warmed raspberry. Oh, and then there's a beautifully ripened tomato....

larry gene is certainly right about picking with two hands. I won't let lazy one-handed pickers near my vines as they'll do too much damage. Best to take a bowl or basket into the garden, to drop the pods into, so you always have both hands free.

It can be surprisingly tricky to get the pods at just the right time. Even small shelled peas taste good although you will get more food if you let them get bigger. Better too small than too big in my opinion though, as the bigger ones get starchy and don't taste very good.

You'll be really good at spotting the pods at the perfect stage at about the time the peas stop producing... ;-)

Larry, thanks for letting me know to use two hands and not break the branch, I suspect I'd have broken more than a few!

None of my pods are ripe yet, they're still kinda flat, but they seem to be long enough.

And Dotty, you're right about fresh picked produce, I just picked my first plant of the season, a delicious ripe red strawberry!
