I have, but probably not in the way you are thinking. This was in a house new enough for asbestos to not be an issue. I held the hose right below the scraper, and that way most of the stuff I scraped off got sucked in instead of letting it fall to clean up after. I've never tried spraying one down first, but always scrap, then just wash off the residue, comes off real easy at that point with a big sponge and warm water - I use the same type I use when putting up wallpaper. Don't be surprised if you find who ever did the taping of the ceiling did a horrible job because they expected the popcorn to hide it. I have one I need to take down soon, it was put up about 5 years ago and now we are considering a mini-split system and need to do some changes to the ceiling. DH does not want to attempt to patch in the popcorn so it is all coming down.

If the bubbling then peeled to bare drywall, you simply did not have a good bond. Such spots are often over the mudded seam areas, where sanding dust was not removed, or a good drywall sealer was not properly applied. Where popcorn is removed dry, often a chauky residue is over the whole area. Use of a good drywall sealer is imperative. Cut out the bubbled areas, patch with a couple coats of drywall compound, sand and prime. Then finish coat with a quality paint suitable for baths with showers. Traditionally, higher sheen paints are used in showers because of their higher resistance to humidity.

Thanks Stax - I may not have explicitly responded to this chain with my plan, but I was actually able to get a small sample of the popcorn ceiling itself and am working on having it tested for asbestos. If it comes back negative I'm all good. If it comes back positive I'll have to see what my options are from there. Hoping the odds are with me since the house was built in 1982 after asbestos was banned - and I actually suspect that it was applied even later than that actually to cover up some defects in the ceiling (but could be wrong).
