I hate ironing. My Mom used to iron everything, sheets, Dad's underwear, just everything. she taught me how to iron when I was about 8. Started with flat stuff, handkerchiefs,etc, finally learned how to iron blouses and shirts. I was darned good at it, but HATED every minute. Now I look at labels and refuse to buy anything that requires ironing. I do use a clothes pole outdoors to dry most of my items. But I always put jeans and towels in the (gas) dryer because I hate the way they get so hard and scratchy. I will try this tip.

There are occasions when nice shirts are the appropriate thing to wear (either with non-jean pants or a skirt). Going to religious services, a funeral, a job interview, or to certain jobs. But I have a feeling that more people are just deciding to go casual (more casual than "Friday casual" at work) for even these things. One place you might check with to see if they're interested in the nice shirts are places that help women get back in the workforce by providing job-interview clothes. Not the traditional consignment shops -- Junior League clubs and the like sometimes have that as their project.

Wertach, keep looking at all thrift stores. Some are better than others. You might also ask on FreeCycle. Cut the collar off above the collar stand. If fraying, you can use zig zag stitch. I second rococogurl. Use the same way of washing if heavy soiling. Pretreat, prewash oxi (vanish in my case), 140 (60c) cotton program with extra water, slower spin (600-800rpm) I use via or ariel powder for whites. The thing is with white shirts is to wash them often, only one wear and always pretreat collor and cuffs even if no soil is wisible, then I use the shirtcycle on miele w1714 as I got and 140 f, I always go shirts in 140f even if they say 104.
