Vulcan Gold Granite...not so easy to replace :o(

I wandered granite yards today...I'm going to end up flying to Seattle to view granite there to replace my Vulcan gold (sold by the granite fabricator after being paid in full). In addition, I'm out of travertine...he used mine (paid for in full) on another job. It's now backordered to mid May. My tub deck arrived, three tiles short (and at $50 a tile that's some expensive tile I'll have to trash and start again). Box of Nordic Black Antique 18x18 was picked up...one has a huge white vein in it, rendering it unusable..the other seems to be on vacation...it wasn't in the box (needed all four tiles to complete hood). Ivory marble, no veins...ya that's not so much coming out of the yards anymore. A few thousand more and you can see the white onyx....

Note to self...and all new remodelers....Use uba tuba and white ceramic...it's easier to replace!

I have enough extra knobs to possibly cover the missing nordic black tile spot...if it won't look funny to have a massing of 20 knobs in the center of the hood...

Igloochic--this is awful!!! I am sorry about all of this. I feel like you could sue your granite guy--and I am not one to suggest suing! He has really done a disservice. I don't understand how one can sell something that was paid in full.

I hope that things will work out and you will find what you need to finish your beautiful kitchen...

Be sure to visit Oregon Tile and Marble. It is an indoor facility and they will bring out the granite slab you pick and place under lights. The customer service is wonderful, however they don't sell to the public. Good luck

Diane, To a certain extent, it comes from trial and error. Some people become pretty good at judging melon ripeness and it seems like others never do. The signs can vary by melon type. My old rancher/farmer friend Fred says he used to cut a plug from a watermelon, check it for ripeness without picking the melon, and then replace the plug and let the melon keep growing if it wasn't ripe yet. He insisted the ants and other critters did not get into the plugged area, which seems odd to me. Nowadays, he just waits for the coyotes to harvest them for him because somehow the coyotes always know when they're ripe and the beat the farmer or gardener to them. First of all, watch the size of the melons. If you're growing a watermelon variety that usually reaches 25-30 lbs., it likely will not be ripe when it is 12-15 lbs. With watermelons, you can usually go by the tendril nearest the melon...it will turn dry and brown. Some people have luck 'knocking' on the melon and not picking until they hear a dull, hollow sound instead of a sharper, higher-pitched pinging or ringing sound. I don't always have a lot of luck with that one myself. You also can keep an eye on the underside portion of the melon that rests on the ground. As the melon ripens, it will turn a dull, creamy off white to yellow color and often the texture of that ground spot will get a little rough. Usually, you use these clues in order: size, browning tendril, yellowish-white ground spot and THEN do the thumping test. If the thumping test is the only clue, your ears are like mine and you're hearing the wrong sound. Wait until all 4 clues are 'right' and you should be harvesting a ripe watermelon. With cantaloupes and muskmelons, there are lots of clues. First of all, the netted melons we commonly call cantaloupes are not actually cantaloupes as the rest of the world knows them. So, for muskmelons, here are the signs of ripeness to watch for: 1) Days To Maturity---even if you've forgotten the variety, most of these types of melons mature in 75-90 days. In our very hot summers, you may find melons ripening more quickly than their DTM indicates, but not weeks and weeks early....just days early. 2) Most muskmelons slip from the vine by themselves when fully ripe. They form an abscission layer where the melon stem attaches to the vine. If you check that area daily, at some point you'll notice a slight crack. As the days go on, the crack on the stem grows larger and completely encircles the stem when the melon is at the peak of perfection. When you tug gently at the melon, it will detach easily at that abscission layer when the muskmelon is fully ripe. Once that melon is fully ripe (known as 'full slip')it only takes a very slight tug for the melon to separate. If you are tugging hard and the melon doesn't separate, it isn't ready yet. 3) Most muskmelons go from a greenish undertint to their rind to an orangey/salmon one, except for the melons that have white or green-flesh. With most muskmelons, the color of the rind becomes almost a golden-salmon color under the netting. This color can be surprising to see because most grocery-store muskmelons are picked before they reach that color so we aren't used to seeing it. 4) Most muskmelons develop a delicious aroma when near ripeness that smell so good, you're looking around for a split-open melon because it is hard to imagine you're getting that luscious smell from an intact melon. 5) On muskmelons, the netting develops more and becomes more prominent as the melon ripens. A melon that has partial netting, or skimpy undeveloped netting is not fully ripe. Muskmelons don't continue to ripen after being picked, so take care to avoid picking too early. They will develop softer texture, but their flavor won't get any better than it was the day you picked it. With true cantaloupes and many other melon types, it is a lot harder to tell because they have a thicker dense rind more like a watermelon, so you don't have netting to help you figure out the ripening, and some of them (like the canary and casaba types) don't form an abscission layer either. The ones from the inodorus group don't emit a 'ripe' aroma either, making it even harder to tell. Some of them, like Collective Farm Woman, have their rind completely change colors as they ripen, which you may not realize if it is your first time to grow that type. For example, with Collective Farm Woman, you'll see it ripen from dark green to mottled green gold to mostly gold. I harvested my first Collective Farm Woman cantaloupe green years ago because I didn't know to wait for it to turn gold. Other melons have their rind change from green to either gray, yellow or brown. Marcy, Crenshaws, like the variety Crane or Sweet Freckles, for example, are in the Cucumis melo var. inodorus group, which I think is the group that gives the fewest clues to ripeness. They don't soften, they don't give off a ripe aroma and they don't form an abscission layer. I just wait for them to get to the right color and degree of freckles that I'd expect from that variety, if they have speckles/freckles. The Crenshaw types are late to ripen, and I usually use DTMs to help me know when they're ready. If in doubt, I leave them on the vine a bit longer because I tend to want to pick them too early. Do you know which Crenshaw variety you planted? If you do, I might have grown it before and might know what its rind looks like when it is fully ripe. Diane, I almost forgot to add that with many melons, you can judge ripeness by pressing gently at the melon's blossom end. When you press on that area, an immature melon will be hard and will not 'give' when you press and a mature one will. The melon is at full ripeness when the skin is fairly easy to depress, and the melon is overripe when there is very little elasticity under finger pressure or if your pressure pushes your fingers right through the rind of the melon. Unfortunately, this pressure test doesn't work with winter melons like Crenshaws or with watermelons. AFTER you pick a melon and cut it open, look at its flesh and learn to recognize how a ripe one looks. The melon flesh should be 'just right' as in not too hard or not too soft (mushy). Ripe melons will have conspicuous but tender fibers in their flesh. If you pick melons too early and they aren't ripe and they aren't very tasty, you can puree them, add the sweetner of your choice and make them into a sorbet, or you can make them into melon soup so the other ingredients make up for the lack of sweet flavor. Jennifer, I LOVE, lovelovelovelovelove Stouffers spinach souffle! I can make a whole meal out of just thatand eat the whole thing. Oh, my, its rich! But its SO good. When theyre on sale I buy a whole bunch of them, and I think the cashiers must think Im nuts sometimes! Something I used to make (invented, like most of the things I make) was kind of like a soufflebut not as collapsible. I beat up a bunch of eggs with a tiny bit of milk, poured some in a glass breadpan (to cover the bottom), put in a layer of cream cheese and cheddar cheese and topped that with spinach (frozen, squeezed dry), put in more egg, another layer of the cheeses and spinach, poured the last of the egg over the top and topped it with a nice layer of the cheddar. Then I baked itdont remember how hot or how longprobably about 300 and just until the cheese was brown and toasty on top. Yum! Hadnt thought about it in a long time. Might need to make it again. Bet it would work with wilted fresh spinach too. BTW, if youre gonna grow chard, you really should put in some spinach too. My friend who lives out there grows Bloomsdale Long Standing and says she has really good luck with it. And consider peas, lettuce, radishes, and kohlrabis, they should all work well for you. And I think maybe you could at least try beets and parsnips and carrots since they can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked and since they can stay in until its getting really cold again (I had freezing temps a few times before I finally got them covered with leaves). And they may not get as big as they would somewhere with a longer growing season, but theres no "lower limit" on size for eating the root crops, so however big they get is the size you eat them! And you should be able to grow other cole crops besides the kohlrabis, too. I dont grown any of them, partly because of space, but also because theyre so inclined to get aphids. Maybe that wouldnt be such a problem at a cooler higher altitude. Check out the last page of the chart Ive linked below for more info on planting times for veggies. Digit, I totally agree with you about radicchio! I dont quite understand why its considered edible! Tried red orach last year, and dont like that eitheror endive! Just dont like bitter! And Ive never even tried some of the less-than-usual veggies youre all talking about above, like salsify, chicory, sorrel, fennel. Actually I have a couple bronze fennels, but Im growing them for the feathery, bronzy ornamental valuenot to eat. (Tho I have one of them growing at the back of the tomato patch, and may be tempted to dig up a root from that one just to check it out!) And none of that was about SOUPso heres my soup connection! Bonnie, I made Ham Bone soup last weekso Id have something easy when Im coming and going over the holidaysyet something with "body!" I call it ham BONE soup, cause back right after I got married we were poor (not that Im rich now!) and when I made it, it was made with a bone with virtually no meat left on it! That was the only way we could afford it! Now when I have a ham I save the bonewith LOTS of meat, to make soup. And this time I made it with Anasazi beans. Much better than the great northern or navy beans I used to use. Thats the only way Ill make it from now on. Oh, and since you were talking about parsnips, when I made it I had just gone out to dig some carrots (for the soup), and while I had the leaves pulled back I dug some beets and parsnips too, so when I was making the soup I decided to put in a few parsnips too to see if it workedand theyre great in ham bone soup. They need to be the very last thing put in, because they cook very quickly. I just cut them up pretty small. Ill add more next time. When it comes to soup, I pretty much stick to the old standbys, chicken noodle, ham bone, and vegetable beef barley. And when I make them, the WAY I make themjust keep adding a "little" bit more of this and that and this and thatI usually wind up with TWO big soup pots full, and freeze most of it in 1-gallon plastic "sherbet" containers so I can get "a gallon" of it out whenever I dont have time for anything else or am just to brain dead to even try to think of something else to make. Its fast, and easy, and always there! And sometimes I make ones that are a little less common for melentil, potato, leek, and a few others. When I was looking up the leek recipes recently I found a parsnip soup recipe that I printed out to try sometimeif sometime ever comes! I have SO many recipes Im gonna have to have them buried with me so I can bring them back next time around! I dont collect cook books anymore! I had a whole bunch I sold at my garage sale before I moved to this house. I still use my 1962 Better Homes & Gardens looseleaf cookbook that I got right after I got out of high school! Its (needless to say) getting REALLY beat up by now, so I bought a new onebut I dont use it! I like the recipes in the old one better! When it comes to eating, I do believe in moderation, but whats the point of eating it/anything if it doesnt taste good! Besides that I still have thealso very beat up3 x 5 cards my mother wrote her recipes on for me that I use over and over and............ And besides that I just stick to the web! Its so easy to look up a whole bunch of recipes for the same thing, and then pick out the best ingredients from eachto create your own version of whatever it is youre making. Thanks again everyone! I was sort of underwhelmed finishing this one; partly because the "thrill" of remodeling isn't as great the 2nd time around, and partly because it didn't feel like a "new" kitchen because the cabinets and floors were basically the same. You all are helping remind me that it is a new space. And don't get me wrong, it's not that I think the kitchen doesn't look fancy, as but that's only b/c I put a few "bling" items in to make it look fancier than it is. The sparkly chandeliers, sink, and wood hood and backsplash (hopefully) draw the eye away from the older cabinets and older floors. Igloo, I think you could still pull off a farm sink. You'd LOVE it! Celticmoon, I thought the same thing about the FKB! What do you do when you have 2 kitchens listed under your name? (Aside from getting a therapist, that is.) Chiefneil, I can see where it looks like the stacked crown is thicker over the sink, but it's the way the carpenter made the hood. It's constructed as sort of a box, then the box indents down to the arched part. The way the crown is sitting on the upper part of the box makes it look like it's really thick crown. And the hutch height was designed solely as the "clutter zone". I learned a good lesson from the last kitchen; the busiest corner in the kitchen will quickly become the "drop zone" for daily mail, keys, cell phones, etc. I raised the height so that there would be no chance of that corner meshing with the cooking part of the kitchen. Socalthreems, I LOVE the actual stone. DH was super nervous about using dark counters, as we had light granite in the last house, and it never looked dirty. He was afraid it would show everything. But there's so much white, gold, etc, that it doesn't show any dirt at all. I don't see fingerprints or smudges either. I really really like the stone. Nellie820, I'd LOVE to see your plans! Now that I'm done here, I need to find something else to channel my energies into! amck, I hope you like the range as much as I do. I LOVE it! muscat, the floors are so weird. I really like them, but a lot of people don't. I wanted the kitchen to be a "refined rustic with a nod to the traditional". I just don't think any other flooring would give me the same look. rmlanza, I found the sink at a local builder's supply warehouse. Since I'd wanted a copper farm sink, and knew their price tag, I was shocked to see the prices they had on their granite farm sinks! I normally hem and haw about such purchases, but I bought it on the spot. It ended up being the star of the kitchen! caminnc, I think all together it was around 2-3 months. We started before we lived here, and were trying to get it all done before we moved out of the old house. That didn't happen, but we at least got the major stuff done. We were simultaneously selling our other house, and had LOADS of projects we were finishing over there as well. For about a 2 month period, we were working non-stop. Ugh. Don't EVER want to do that again. And thanks all, for the kind words about the backsplash. I'm surprised at the responses about it, and I was surprised that I picked such a simple color/design (esp. after my last backsplash!) I only recently realized why I kept gravitating toward plain white. The upper cabinets are *so* close to the countertop. My tile guy said the normal height b/w counters and upper cabs is around 18". My height is only 14.25 inches. My coffee pot barely fits! Somehow I think that I kept wanting white to help visually extend the cabinetry, so that it didn't look choppy. Claybabe, I loved my last house, until my kids started getting bigger. We really outgrew it. And I mean it when I say I *hated* cooking toward the last year we lived there. 'Course I'll probably say the same thing here, when the kids start leaving home in a few years! LOL!

Wow. You guys are great! Thank you all so much for the kind words and encouragement. It helps a lot. And I see I'm not the only one in this boat! I do know that things will get better, and I can always plant new roses, etc. But it's just the loss of the rare roses that pisses me off. Why couldn't it be the more common ones that are easily replaced? Of course that's not the way it goes, altho there were a few of those too! And it's my fault for planting the tiny own-root bands in this crappy soil of ours before they've grown to a decent size. And it's my fault for not keeping on top of the sprinklers to be sure they are covering the entire beds, and my fault for not getting the most invasive weeds and underplantings pulled out when they were smaller. But... that's because I've been so busy, and overly obsessed and buying waaaay too many roses. I'm not growing and cultivating them, I'm collecting them. That's what I do. I collect things. It's sad. It's a sickness I guess. I know that in the coming seasons I will get all the beds done. And Bluegirl, yes I am doing what you said. I plant a rose, or weed part of a bed. In this heat, that's all I can do. It's slow going, but it's nice when I do get something done. Right now tho, I also am now dealing with the death of my 98yr old mom. We've been expecting it for sometime, but it's kind of surreal now that it has finally happened. My brother just flew out from Upstate NY and my sister is coming up from SoCal, so we will be dealing with all the estate and stuff over the next two weeks. I'm not going to get much done in the yard for awhile, except watering. Which is ok, since it's been too darn hot to work out there. By then it will be cooler and easier to do stuff outside. The only drawback now is the days are getting shorter, so I won't have as much daylight to get things done. Oh well, it'll get done when it gets done. LOL My life will be so different now. I'll have more time and less stress. Not that Mom was stressful. It was my niece who is my partner in the shop, and who lived with her. She's got mental issues and was a nightmare to deal with regarding Mom. Our lives revolved around her needs and wants, and my younger son and I had to go stay with Mom whenever she wanted to have time off. Now I have freedom, and so does Mom! She was trapped in her bed in a body that didn't work and a mind that was basically gone. I will miss her, but I will not miss the ordeals we went thru with my niece. And I will think of Mom when I'm out there working in the garden. Being out there will help me get over her passing. Judith, your chickens sound wonderful. We only have room for a few. (In fact we're not supposed to have more than 2... which is totally ludicrous... why bother?) Anyway.... we built a decent little shack for the girls and have a run that's 8'x24', but we're going to add another 10-12' in length and use our old satellite dish to put over part of it. It's going to be a fun and funky set-up for them. And next yr... I want some of those Blue Laced Red Wyandottes and Brahmas. Can't wait! Oh and I also am using weed barrier under some of my potted roses. Saves on weeds that's for sure. Altho they still get in the pots. But now I am sort of cultivating some weeds. Those are the goodies for the chickens! They love it when I bring them their "greens!"

I'm going to have to find out where we're going. We're going to two facilities in Seattle. Neither sell to the public so I'll need my granite guy with me (he's making the arrangements now).

kelleg...this is definately elevating itself to a court issue if we don't see some danged good resolution from the original company (not who I'm going to see granite with). My slab for the kitchen was special (who's isn't LOL) but after having tile made to match it...I'm sort of up a creek without finding a good replacement. In person all of the suggested pieces so far won't work. Too much grey, green, etc.

I was told that I might be able to get a slab with some white, (not as dark as the normal 2008) but it may take more than one slab to get enough to make the counters if I'm going to pick and choose the sections that carefully. DH is to put it mildly...a bit peeved.

Ehh well this too shall pass...hopefully like a bad bout of food poisoning :oP quickly with just a little gas.

I am so sorry to hear about the problems you've been having. I'm sure it will all work out OK in the end but it can't be any fun to be going through this.

(The potfiller arrived today - haven't yet opened the box though as Hubby is sanding the floors.)

I was so upset about your granite and marble, and now the tile! How are you maintaining your sense of humor??? I was so aghast at what has happened to you that I have notified my fabricator that a) I want my granite out of the yard ASAP and b) I want to be there when she goes to pick up my slabs, so I can see both (only one was visible in the stacks) before she trucks them away, even if it is a 2 hour drive each way. I have also let the fabricator know that I have heard stories about this kind of thing, and that it had better not happen to us.

I will think positive thoughts for you to find exactly what you need in Seattle. Good luck!

You could sing for me Buehl LOL (Something about a kitchen coming together since your's is shaping up beautifully!).

We were on our way to Seattle anyhoo so DS can go to the hospital there, so it's just a drop in the bucket to add to the trip I guess. (Mom did you read that...we'll leave on the 7th most likely but have to visit Seattle for a day afterwards so don't take any more time off) Look...there I saved an email heh heh (She never posts but does read my posts LOL)

I found a lovely Sauv blanc to brighten the evening, and DH called and says he's finally coming home (he's been on the slope and pretty much out of touch on a dangerous job...I hate that). DS was dunking his binkie in the wine a few mins ago saying "yum yum" (kid won't eat real food but he likes a good white wine in small drops).

Petlady...there ya go :) Some good has come from my little fun adventure. I've made someone paranoid about their granite LOL

I'd almost want to take delivery to my garage in the future LMAO I'm getting nuts over this stupid job!

Hey don't let the dust stop you from opening the pot filler box....you'll see what I mean when you get to the actual pot filler box (the filler itself is clean but the box...I don't think anyone dusted it, and I certainly didn't when I handed it off to be mailed). There is at least a half inch of glacier dust on the top of the box...and an inch of drywall dust on the bottom (it's nestled in it's pretty container inside so never fear for the guts of the box). :) I hope it works for you...I hate to see such a pretty thing go to waste!

I commiserate. They sold my granite and marble a couple of years ago, too. Gave me a song and dance about how they decided my slabs had flaws that I wouldn't want, etc. Never really admitted that they sold 'em. I never found ones that I liked as well, either, as I wanted heavy burgundy lakes in my Juparana Bordeaux (after three white kitchens in addition to the one that I grew up in, I never wanted to see white again, except on my baking counter. I wanted dark and colorful, and something that obscures stains from port and red wine, heh, heh). Then my Thassos baking slab was not quite as crystal-free as my original one, but that bothered me less. I wish you better luck. The only way to avoid that occurrence is to take delivery and store the slabs yourself, even if they then have to be transported to the fabricator at the appropriate time. Selling them out from under you is a very common occurrence.

Good luck in Seattle-I hope that you find the perfect slabs-maybe ones you fall even more in love with! I can't believe this is happening with your tile now too! I know when it is all done it will be amazing-and then you can really have at them for all this!

I'll find my happy side soon and get through this. Sorry if I sounded grumpy. I'm always beyond tired when DH is out of town and I'm 100% with the little guy. A bad time to find out about the added problems.

I've thought of it all night...I don't think I like the thassos marble for the bath :( Dang it this was one decision made! You know what would look great???? Lava stone!

I'll look for your post Carla...I haven't seen it yet. I just got back from the granite yard way way way out in the "Valley"

It turns out that we may have issues with finding the travertine and they had some that was not the right size, but the right color and quality (I hate bad fill!) so I hauled the baby out to the car, and he napped (thank god) while I wandered the yard for a couple of hours. I picked up an acceptable travertine just in case, (we can always use it in the new house if my idiots end up sending us what they're supposed to this week) and the entire staff took an interest in my sad story LOL and helped me scour the yard for options.

Turns out that about a year and a half ago they did a big commercial job with Vulcan gold. The commercial folks didn't like the "light" portioins of the vulcan and worked around that leaving large chunks, some half the size of a regular slab. The parts they left were the parts I want, with equal levels of gold, white and black. So I'll be back out on Friday with my layout to do some measuring and see if we can make this work. I actually have three small counters, and it's such a crazy granite that it can have variation and still look right.

I also received a fabulous email (thank you!) about a granite called Barberella which I'll see if I can find. It is also close, not as much white, but close enough to work with.

So for DS's bathroom...I found a few options...what do you think of this:

The dotted one is like a counter Fred Flinstone would have- so fun and definitely suitable for a child's BR. Second black marble would be great for a space/astronaut theme.

Wouldn't that be neat if the Vulcan Gold remnants work out? And, if it does,,, could you flick your hands and send some of that Karma on down this way- definitely feeling granite-whipped at the moment!

Who'd think we'd fall in love with a rock (that we can't wear on our hands LOL). If they don't work out, we'll end up searching out of state...and so every lead helps. The only issue is cost. Shipping is by the pound here...so a slab of granite weighs???? Ya A LOT!!!

i-chic--you enjoy every last drop of that sauv blanc--you deserve it!!! (BTW, we had some Ferrari Carano Fume Blanc with dinner tonight--yum!).

I cannot believe the bad luck you are having with your stone(s). And all the salespeople/contractors/etc. wonder why we the consumers are all so paranoid and anxious about every little thing!

I hope it works out for you with those smaller pieces of V.G. Fingers are crossed, hon!

On the bright side, LOVE that stone with all the circles for DS' bathroom!!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!!! And I don't go for circle-y patterned granite either. That one is just too cool for words!

Thanks all for the suggestions. I won't be giving up until the last wine drops (and we have a decent cellar so I've got time) :oP I'll keep my Seattle listing handy if we are going to have to go that route. My hope is we make it work here, but we'll see. And yes this is going to be expensive, and not for me! These people suck frankly. They should be sucking up to me like crazy right now (the original company) so they don't get hit with fraud charges....but instead they're continuing to blow me off and screw up on orders...sheesh

DS is trying to kill me...I should probably go smack him around a bit (ok that means tickle him silly and then feed him pudding). Toodles!

I like them both! I think I want the Fossil Black for my kitchen!!! [DH won't go for it though *sigh*]

I vote for the Fossil Black. I think it will "grow" with him...even as a teen it will be "cool," at least I think it will...but what do I know? I have a preteen DD who's already saying "but mom...you don't understand" or "...you don't get it" (I get it all right!)

Anyway...Fossil Black vote here!

I have a slight preference for the pegmatite granite (the one with the big circles, and to all the geologists on this site, I'm sorry if I'm mangling the name) for two reasons: 1. more color, thus more decorating choices and 2. the fossils might end up being limiting, esp. if a boy decides he hates dinosaurs. (I'm speaking as a mother of boys here. Both of my boys went thru the dino phase, then outgrew them, then rediscovered Jurassic Park and similar. Kids change their minds a lot as they grow. My kid had to have his room painted lime green, then 3 years later he wants to junk everything green and paint it red. Don't ask.) However, FB is so cool that it's only a slight preference the other way.

Vulcan Gold Granite...not so easy to replace :o(
