I think, Doonie, you're right. The key is having ample space in the aisle. I took a second look at Allison's kitchen and I noticed the wide aisle between the cooking area and sink. It is possible for us to push the island out a few inches, I was overly concerned because (like Allison) we have a coffered ceiling (my favorite part of the kitchen!) and I was trying to line up the middle of the island with a beam. We are choosing not to do hanging pendants (again like Allison) as I like a more wide open appearance. But I guess I was over-symmetricalizing (yep, new word!) the arrangement of the island to the ceiling beam. My husband has the plan with him at work so this is a horrible chicken scratch drawing of what we have going on (he is a custom cabinet maker, not a KD, but a cabinetmaker. So we have many, many, many arguments about LOOKS vs. USE & FLOW. I am positive our kitchen will LOOK beautiful, I also want to make sure it works as beautifully.) Part of the reason for the change in design is I would like to have a wall oven microwave combo. If we stuck with the old plan of having the sink on the now existing halfwall looking into the dining room, there is no room in the layout for the walloven micro combo. By knocking down the wall and moving the sink and dw and trash to the island, it opens up space in the once blind corner cabinet area of the wall oven combo. Hmmmmm, hadn't put much thought into doing dw drawers. We are doing an integrated frig and integrated dw (since the kitchen is at the front of the townhouse and the room you walk into upon entry, but drawers could work that way as well...hmmmm.... Used book sales, dusty ol' book shops, library sales, they are my favorite haunts and past times. I end up sitting cross-legged on the floor all dusty, I look like a bum.. a book bum. However...mini rant to follow... while I love to browse and purchase books, I get so fed up with booksellers and antique dealers who are pushy and grabby and seem to have no manners what-so-ever. They are only interested in the bottom line - profit and condition - and I feel like elbowing them straight into the ol' textbooks section. Ah.. thank you for your patience. Rant over. After years and years of searching for a copy of Workers in the Dawn by George Gissing, I do confess to popping onto an old book site, finding the one I wanted and punching in the golden ticket numbers.. that would be my charge card number. Presto. Twenty-four hours and about $100 later, I owned it. Turns out, it is a very hard to find book and finding it for under $100 is nearly unheard of. And if I find another copy for a quarter someplace? I'll buy it and give it to a fellow Gissing fan. I am all for the thrill of the hunt to find that special title, but after a while, I just want my hands on that book. PAM

rgreen, I'm a CPA and I have a degree in Economics. I recognize some of the words you've used but how you've used them isn't quite right. As an example, what you describe as "price point" is called equilibrium or market equilibrium. It's the intersection of supply and demand curves, where the quantity of goods supplied equals the quality of goods demanded. It says nothing about profit or revenue maximization. Profit (and revenue) can be higher at points other than the equilibrium point. Let's make you Emperor for a moment. You own the company that makes the product for which costs have increased and need the profits to pay for the spending of your Empire. You can increase the price, decrease the quantity in the package, or do nothing. Which do you choose to do? Now, you're in charge of the marketing department for the Emperor's company. You've done market research and it tells you that your customers don't want to be informed of price increases or quantity decreases (this is true). The Emperor has told you either price or quantity will change. What do you do about communicating it or not?
