Cooktop opposite the sink.
Comments (19)I think that given the space and traffic flow you have, the layout works. You have larger aisles than I have had with either of my island cooktop/opposing sink kitchens and your island is a little longer than the longer of my two. I would consider moving the cooktop over to the left and just having one of the 12" cabinets there so you have a larger counter space to work with. If you bake a lot, you might want to reverse than and slide to the right, then flip the DW and trash and slide the sink/trash/dw section down enough to offset the cooktop. That would give you the longer counter section on the island end closest to the ovens. I like at least 3-4 feet on one side and I wanted a minimum of 4 feet where I would be baking and working with dough. The island helps by not having walls, but you just need room to move, roll, etc. For me, it would be better to offset the cooktop as long as you have a minimum of 12" on the other end for mis en place or plating. Is that 18" in the corner next to the ovens a pullout or a pantry with rollouts? That is a narrow cabinet not to have something like that. If the 4 drawer is a base with an upper, just don't. That 18" of counter would be a useless clutter catcher. You do have the option of rounding that corner by the pantry. I don't know if I could resist putting floor to ceiling bookshelves or narrow pantry space there (6-9 or 12" can-try) or a combination of the two. I really wanted a full height cookbook space in my kitchen and just couldn't fit it in. You may not need that at all. Oh, and good for you for thinking of a place for your cat dishes. Have you seen them put into low pullouts? Mine were grazers, so that wouldn't have worked for us, but I always liked that option. If you can customize that space, you could have a cabinet with shelves or drawers above for storing food and other kitty supplies -- a true kitty korner....See MoreMain sink across island from cooktop- too far away???
Comments (9)Refrigerator position... This one will have to be a personal preference choice... The refrigerator currently is in an ideal location for DR access...more milk, condiments, etc....as well as close by for putting away leftovers, those condiments, etc. It's also not a bad location for the island or Breakfast Nook seating. Yes, it's a longer walk from the FR for someone who wants a snack. If you switch w/the Ovens, it will mean a long walk from the DR...it will also be a longer walk from the cooktop & sink (for putting away those leftovers, etc.) A switch will also mean eliminating the "baking center" concept...unless you move the cooktop down to compensate. You might consider putting in a Beverage Cooler (undercounter refrigerator) in the upper right corner of the Breakfast Nook...it would solve both problems! If the uncercounter refrigerator doesn't appeal to you or won't work for whatever reason, then ask yourself... When do you use the refrigerator more...at meal & cleanup time or for snacks? Do you want a "baking center"? Your answers to these questions will show you where the refrigerator is best placed for you! Good luck!...See MoreSinks on opposite sides of a wall
Comments (11)Too many is better than not enough! :) In the grand scheme of things, multiple shut offs isn't a big deal and it may have made sense to do it that way as things were added on. Having the outside spigot being able to be shut off separately is a good idea. Where I live, it's required because you need to shut off and drain the outside spigots in the winter so that they don't freeze and break. You wouldn't want anything else shut off in that case. If it was all being done from scratch, then it may have made more sense to move the green handled shut off over to the washer feeds. Then the kitchen sink could be shut off separately from the washer/outside spigot. But on the other hand, I find that those silver handled shut offs get corroded pretty easily and that one time that you actually need to shut off the water quickly, turning the handle is near impossible and when you do, it leaks all over the place. So having the higher quality green handled shut offs could come in handy. :)...See MoreCooktop or sink on island? Wld love to hear from those who've had both
Comments (46)OK... I have been thinking about this for hours and it kept me awake last night. I've been working on it all morning, and here is the latest version. I am pretty excited about this version because I now have a nice landing area/mudroom to come in from the garage area to. I like being able to come into a space other than right into the kitchen. I like the flow a lot better and I like the open airy space in the work portion of the kitchen instead of forcing everything to revolve around windows in front of a dining set that we rarely even use. Some of the measurements are a little off because I completely changed everything. I took a lot of advice from everyone, and I really appreciate your taking the time to look at this and give me feedback. Any other input or advice, please keep it coming! Where should I put that prep sink on the island? Is that OK? More to the right? I think I may need to move the island slightly right to keep 4' off all of the counters. Thank you!...See Moresabjimata
