craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener

I have a problem with a craftsman 1/2 hp garage door. I just bought the house a fwe weeks ago, i reset all the codes and i have reprogrammed al the remotes. I have two car remotes, a wireless one outside the door and a wall (wired) opener. Two times in 3 weeks my garage door opened after i was gone to work, one time closed itself and the second time it didn't. What could be wrong? It's kinda scarry to be away and to know that the door may open itself...i have relatives a mile away and they called me and told me that the garage door is open. It's supposed to have a "rolling code" with bilions of codes....can anyone help?

You didn't reset any codes. There is no way for you to do that. If the previous owner still has an opener he can open your door. The only way you can prevent that is to buy new remotes, erase the memory of the receiver by holding the learn button in for 6 seconds and then program the new remotes. If you program the old remotes you are back to square one.

There are a couple things that can cause the door to open by itself. One is if the installer used uninsulated staples when he ran the wire from the wall button to the opener. They sometimes cut through the insulation due to vibration and cause the opener to open or close. The other reason is the 'down limit' adjustment can be off just enough to allow the door to hit the floor and the safety circuit senses the door has run into something and it will reverse it to the open position. Both possibilities can be intermittent.

Cut your losses and chunk the Craftsman garage door opener. Get a Genie and you will never post a question about openers on this forum again. A little research on this forum will show you hundreds of posts about those badly engineered and cheaply produced monsters. There are probably more questions about them than anything else on this forum. I recommend the Genie "Excelerator". Opens twice as fast, quiet, has two lights, and extremely reliable. Thanks Don, I should've mentioned the up force was at 9. I found and called the cust svc number 800-528-5236, and they made me lower the up force to 5, manually lift the door waist high and drop it. Since it slammed to the ground, their conclusion is that the door is not balanced and thus the GDO is doing all the work. they recommended a couple of repair guys to do what's called a Door Balancing. Does this make sense to you? Thanks again.

If tapping on the unit restores function the first thing I would look for is a loose connection. BTW, Chamberlain makes most, if not all, of Craftsman openers.

Hi everyone, I know i sound like a tape recorder but my craftsman 1/2 hp has been working fine for 3 yrs. Not sure what happened to the remotes, but they stopped working. I first tried replacing the batteries but after that didnt work i went out and brought two brand new up to date chamberlain klik3u universal garage remotes. Retail 40 bucks per. They say in the manual they are compatible to my garage opener which was manufactured in 1997. They wont program as well. My garage opens and closes fine. I guess im here to find out if anyone has any other trouble shooting facts to program because the "press the red button like a door bell, hit the button you want programmed" basics isnt working for me. I called chamberlain about the remotes and they basically told me go jump in a lake, all our remotes program fast and easy!!! I need help ppl. Plzzzzz
