Meghane, I love the idea of re-tiling the floors with white hex/colored accent tiles! (You know, those hexagonal flowers?) Maybe changing the vanities out. One thing you might try instead is making them look old, by replacing the door/drawer panels with radiator cover mesh and changing out the hardware, to get that retro vibe. If you need the storage, it would be insanity to get pedestal sinks. The glass shower door looks good, it's functional, and the tub is reglazed, so..if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I agree that I would try new wall paint/towels/a purely decorative shower curtain to tie in the wall tiles instead. I personally like the yellow tiles. Those weird combos were very fifties, why not embrace them? You could even use brown accent tiles in the master bath. OR you could reglaze the brown tiles to black, if you truly hate them. Maybe you would like yellow and black better? I love the seafoam green! In my grandparent's only bathroom, they had seafoam green tiles with black tiles on top. They had that exact mirror/light, with a square pedestal sink. I think they had some weird asbestos floor tile. You can skip that! :)

just watched the one of the shows on the diy ch and the gal was restoring a claw foot tub...it was lots of hard work but she must have been using a product like bartenders friend as it didn't scratch the surface...that the main problem...not hurting the tile...mammie is that what they used? their steam machine? I have a small one, but don't have grout anymore....

I got the cabinets through Home Depot (20% off) they are not higher end but they have held up extremely well and we’ve been happy with them. I don’t remember the brand, but the color is cognac on maple. They’re standard kitchen cabinets. We got 2 regular drawer banks, 1 extra wide drawer bank, 2 sink cabinets and the closet you can see in the picture for about 1800 w/the discount. We bumped the shower wall 6 inches into the bedroom to make the shower bigger, pulled the cabinets out from the wall a couple of inches to provide more counter top. And curved the edge the counter for interest. Just for fun, this is what we had to start with. The tub was rusted and there were two doors, 1 from the hall & 1 from the master bedroom, we closed up the hall door. I think we got our moneys worth. LOL As for the labor, I found my Contractor through a plumber I had hired to put in a kitchen faucet. I asked if he had someone good he could refer and he referred Matt to me. Matt had his own company but just him and his guys. All of his work was by word of mouth, he didn’t advertise or push for business, he didn’t need to. I think I got fair pricing from him because he didn’t have the overhead a lot of the larger companies might have. He wasn’t the least expensive and he wasn’t the most expensive. Finding someone who was willing to work on our schedule and not having to have it done ASAP is what really helped me to be able to keep our costs at a minium for both labor and materials.

We lived in a fantastic 1931 single bath plus powder room house from the time we married until both kids graduated from university. It was very well built with quality materials and had a double lot in an upscale neighborhood. The couple who bought it from us have 3 kids and it was a move up for them from a 2 bedroom, 1 bath house.  When we went to sell, the house was such a beautiful house that only having one bath wasn't a major issue. It did help that the bathroom was very large with separate tub and shower and a door to the master bedroom.  In an area with higher house values, adding a bathroom might have been a reasonable upgrade but our house values were moderate. Adding a bathroom would probably only add a max of 20% of cost to the market value and we were used to the single bathroom so it wasn't an issue for us.
