I think Faron hit the nail on the head. I was on call when I started painting the door, and got called into work during the process. My brother in law finished the job, and I don't think he let the subsequent coats dry completely. In addition, when I sliced through one of the bubbles to flatten it back out, the layer of paint I had to cut through was really thick. Yes, the door was primed, and I don't think the door was too hot as it was painted in the evening. This is what leads me to believe that not enough time was allowed for the second and third coat of paint to dry since my brother in law ran out of light and tried to hurry according to my wife. I think with the amount of paint on the door at this point, the easiest method will be to strip it. Thanks for the link Annz, I'll check into it. Thanks again guys.

It appears that you have traditional plaster and, for what ever reason, the plaster finish coat is breaking away from the scratch coat. The paint itself is holding fine. I would square off the plaster to where it is still firm , and then patch it. I like to use "hot mud" for such patches. Hot mud is like drywall compound, but it dries chemically. It comes as a dry powder and is mixed with water. It is available in several set times: 5, 20, 45, etc. It sands fairly easily. It is a good practice to dampen the scratch coat of plaster to help assure adhesion to it. After patching, your walls do have a texture which will have to be matched. There are spray cans available for such small patches. Then, prime and paint.
