Admin - Postings re garage door openers

Hi - I wonder if it would be possible to start a new forum for these things on their own? Complaints seem to show up almost daily and it's getting tiresome to wade through them to get to anything else. I'm sure the people involved would appreciate getting help - the junk they've bought is obviously defective, but do the rest of us have to sort through so many of the posts to be able to see what else is new all the time?

Since most seem to be craftsman, has anyone simply contacted sears? Someone ought to notify sears concerning this forum in order for them to tigten up and come up w/ a product that works!

Wow, until now I had not realized that "it's getting tiresome to wade through them to get to anything else." I do have 5 of the Craftsman operators myself, have all the manuals, so I simply do not click on the posts that do not interest me. But some of the problems are not addressed in the manuals.

Cut your losses and chunk the Craftsman garage door opener. Get a Genie and you will never post a question about openers on this forum again. A little research on this forum will show you hundreds of posts about those badly engineered and cheaply produced monsters. There are probably more questions about them than anything else on this forum. I recommend the Genie "Excelerator". Opens twice as fast, quiet, has two lights, and extremely reliable. Three possibilities: 1. Bad receiver. 2. Shielded receiver. Did you move, store, or mount anything between the operator and the remotes? Metallic objects blocking the signal are most likely to be a problem. 3. Interference. The best bet. Almost impossible to track down without highly specialized equipment, and little you can do about it anyway, unless you are the owner of the item generating the interference, in which case, turn it off or fix it. Start by turning stuff off and seeing if it makes a difference. Suspect everything electric or electronic, including your neighbor's stuff.

If the opener was manufactured prior to 1993 it did not come with sensors. It sounds like you may have a combination of problems. I would first check the door springs to make sure one of them isn't broken. Next remove the cover off the motor unit and check the condition of the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It should be obvious if it is going bad. On the rear of the motor unit you will find a couple controls. The up and down force adjustments. Increase both of these about 1/4 turn and see if there is any improvement. The normal life of these units is 10 years so you may have a losing cause here. (There are always exceptions though).

Well, I hope he got in by now, but putting a hole in the door will cost money to repair. If it was me; I would strip a few panels of siding off the garage wall and then cut a hole in the sheeting behind the siding just big enough to crawl thru and open the door. Then the siding could be put back on and there would be no cost involved other than personal labor.... and the prospect of trying to get a panel to match an existing garage door (with fading and such) doesn't sound like any fun.

I only looked when mine was broken, found the answer and was delighted! If I'm one of the posters with a broken malfunctioning garage door opener, I'm hoping someone can help me. and as for calling sears for help, yeah, right. I'd trust the folks on here first anytime.

WHAT? No service after the sale? In America? You gotta be kiddin'! I stand corrected, finding a solution on your own intuition is more likely to get results. That's what these forums are all about. Im just surprisd at all the craftsman opener problems. Always ASSumed they were a decent product.

Yeah, they do kinda weigh this forum down. Seems to me that questions about GDOs belong in appliances or the garage forum (! which looks to consist of 3/4 craftsman opener threads already). I don't consider garage door openers part of the home repair topic (like windows, wall cracks, broken doors, etc), any more than I would post about my sewing machine in here. :)

Chamberlain builds the Craftsman operators. And Chamberlain answers the customer service phone. And they are really good at helping. One of my installations required some advice beyond the manual and the advice was fast and competent. I do not believe that the incidence of problems is unusual considering what a large percentage of the total number of operators is built by Chamberlain. Liftmaster is another Chamberlain brand. I also have two Genie operators, one of which needs replacing. The replacement will be from Sears. Genie sales volume is tiny compared to the Chamberlain.
