Can I put drywall compound on a painted, textured wall?

We've got some irregularities on our walls (of drywall) that would look better if the dents were filled a bit, and seams were feathered out better. However, the wall is already painted and heavily textured. My husband thinks we've got to totally sand the area smooth before we can apply the joint compound to the depressions and seams. He says the compound won't adhere to the painted surface.

I think we should be able to fill in on the existent surface and then retexture, prime, and paint just the affected areas.

Can we do that, or is my husband right in thinking the compound will simply fall off the painted walls?

The compound will stick fine.

You can always use a paint softener (deglosser) if the paint has a high gloss finish, otherwise the compound should stick. Drywall compound is easy to sand but it shrinks a lot. Think about what is really needed and try some sample spots.

That is a case of which fix is the least of the available evils. Skim coating that much area is pretty expensive/time consuming/not guaranteed to be a long term solution. Adding 1/4" thick sheet rock means all the door/window frames have to be widened. And the most permanent and proper fix is to remove all that material and install new 1/2" sheet rock. Which, if hired done by pros, would be the quickest solution, and just maybe the least expensive and best solution.

If you still have the wood lathe to fill the hole and just need plaster, you can use plaster of paris (most like your old plaster), or something like versabond drywall compound to fill the areas. The old plaster is probably fairly thick, so you could also screw or glue in some 1/4" or 1/2" drywall first to fill the void, and then use plaster or drywall compound on top of it to completely fill in the area. Plaster of paris will dry very hard, so gradually layer it in to minimize the need for sanding. This is one case where a little is better than a lot, because you can always add more layers. You can use drywall tape on the edges where it meets the old plaster, but may want to score the old plaster so that you can embed the tape a little. Plaster of paris also has a very short working time (about 10 minutes), so don't mix up too much at a time. Drywall compound will probably match almost as well as plaster of paris, and its available in mixes that are easier to work with (20 minute set time, several hour set time, etc.). Bruce

The choice to texture walls, and the type of texture used, is regional. We live in Northern Virginia now, where most older homes never had texture and it would really look out of place to use it. When we lived in Texas it was hard to find a home without texture. The more expensive houses used an orange-peel texture that was quite flat, while cheaper homes used a much rougher texture. My opinion is that texture was used to cover up the errors of marginally skilled wallboard finishing crews. The rougher the texture was, the more it hid the poor wall finish. The walls in inexpensive spec houses felt like sandpaper, even after they were painted. Bruce

Best practice is to knock the sheen off of the areas that you are hoping mud will adhere to. This wouldn't be needed for a flat paint, another option is to prime the area before putting on joint compound (but no one would choose that over 30 seconds with a sanding sponge.) Having said that, I haven't seen joint compound come off a semi-gloss surface all that easily either. So I would say that I would prefer it sanded but in the interest of picking my battles I wouldn't raise a big stink if it were not sanded, especially over latex paint. Hope this helps.

Agree with the other posters, it will stick. IMHO the bigger issue is being able to texture the patched area to match the surrounding wall texture - if you don't do it well it will really stand out. You should practice getting the texture right on a scrap piece of drywall or plywood until you are confident that you've got a good match. Also be careful not to fill the patch in too much or when you are done the new texture will stick out further than the adjacent wall texture.

If you can fill small dents by dabbing in the compound, then yes you can do this - compound sticks fine to paint. I have taped new walls to existing painted walls many times.

If you want to fix the joints and feather them out, then your husband is correct - you need a smooth level surface. Even a single screw head sticking up 1/64" will mess up a finishing job since the taping knife hits that bump as you are finishing. That is why I always scrape my surface level between coats - any little chunk or bump raises havoc. For tips on finishing drywall, see the site below.

i would much prefer to use lightweight spackling compound, it dries in minutes and doesn't shrink.

I have done it many times - no problem as long as the wall is fairly clean. I typically give the wall a light sanding with a pole sander to open the paint a bit.
