Bands like gallon sized pots just fine. You could put them there if you just have some good dirt to put in the pots with them--a somewhat lighter weight duty for your orthopedic problems. Then after a couple of months and hopefully when the elbow is fully recovered, get them into the ground to give them time to prepare for winter. We've not tried any cardboard here, but Gregg Lowery at Vintage Gardens especially recommends using cardboard and mulch. I can't remember whether or not he promised that it would kill all the grass if the mulch were heavy enough. I was reading an excerpt from an organic gardening book about a grass-killing method to use with heavy clay. It used very thick stacks of newspaper (about one or one and a half inches thick, I think... probably cardboard would be the equivalent) with mulch and lots of layers of peat moss and compost on top of that--in other words, a really, really thick heavy thing that would totally wipe out the sun for the grass and provide good topsoil when you were ready to plant. I think you are supposed to wait for something like six months or so before planting, and then the grass won't come back. According to the author, your soil will be magically enriched with a ton of earthworms and will be much more friable for whatever you want to plant there. If you went that route, I guess you'd plant the rose in its own little hump of good dirt, and then surround it starting at a small distance away with the heavy stuff on cardboard that would end up being level with the dirt level of the rose by the time it decomposed a bit. plant to the point where the stem is white.. that is where it was planted before ... err toward high ... those are tiny .... do you have a spot.. right up against the house... as a temp bed for this fall ....??? .. like within a foot of the foundation??? NEVER FERT A HOSTA IN FALL .... late next spring would be ok ... but you need years.. not fert.. to get them big ... what bruce said on mulch ... we arent mulching to extend the season ... we are piling it on.... NEAR GROUND FREEZE ... so they dont pop out of the ground... in late winter.. early spring ... leaves from the lawn.. have to be cut pretty small.. so they dont suffocate the plants .. i used to suck them up ... very dry ... put then in the street.. and then reduce them to about little finger nail size .... so they stayed fluffy ... snow cover is irellevant ... its good ... ignoring my crack about snow thaw in june.. lol ... dont leave them in the glass of water for too long.. they are not aquatic .... few days is OK ... ken

This is the most peacefilled spa kitchen like I have ever seen. You have done so great with your choice of paint and counters and cabinet colors. It was obviously made for this tone of tile. Requirements for egress differ from place to place. Where I live (Ontario Canada) it's enough to have an egress window somewhere in the basement, in addition to the main staircase exit. The window doesn't need to be in the bedroom. It may be different where you live, or you may want to put in a bedroom egress window even if your code doesn't require it. So be sure you budget for that expense if you don't already have what is required. The requirements for a legal bedroom, size-wise, also differ from place to place. If you want to list it as a bedroom when you sell, be sure you build it to the adequate size for your location.
