Does anyone have problems with their marble backsplash etching?

Hi everyone. Will a marble backsplash have problems with etching, especially behind the sink and range (I love to make chili and spaghetti!) Will polished marble show the etching much more than honed? I am seriously considering using the "Greecian Marble" tiles that Home Depot sells (and yes, they do spell it, oddly, with two "e's"! Although it is probably considered a low end marble by some--it is perfect for me because it is mainly off-white shades with very little veining to clash with my busy, light colored granite (and I can "pick through them" and get just the shades I want--off white, no bright whites--and then return the rest!)

If anyone has photos of their "Greecian white" backsplashes, I'd love to see them! Thanks.

I have finally narrowed down my backsplash choices to either this marble (if I can find enough with the darker off-white shades by going through the boxes) and if polished marble will not be a problem in the kitchen) or the Adex Hamilton crackled subway tile in bone (with probably some sort of strip of glass mosaics for interests. Any thoughts? Thanks.

We have similar granites and I must say, although I really wanted the marble, I do think it would have fought with the granite. I would do the crackle subways myself but that is just an issue of taste and what you like:)

In the picture you posted, the backsplash does not work. Probably a monitor issue but....

We used the same White Thassos mosaic tile over the sink that we used as an accent on our tub surround. I sealed it all with the same sealer; STT's SB sealer. It is a solvent based sealer, yet has very minimal odor. It is extrememly easy to apply and buff off; doesn't leave a film or haze. I don't need to clean it over the sink very often. When I do, I either spray it with my alcohol-water w/ lavender oil mixture and wipe dry, or I use 7th Generation Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner (link below). I called the company to make sure it is safe to use on Marble, Travertine, etc. I spray it on the tile, let sit a bit, and then wipe dry with a microfiber cloth (no need to rinse). I'll also spray some on the cloth and wipe the tile with the dampened cloth. FYI, I use Mrs. Meyers Shower Cleaner (http://www.mrsmeyers.com/Products/Household_Cleaners/Lavender_Shower_Cleaner) as an after-shower spray--it is stone-safe according to the company (but their All-Purpose cleaner is not ?). Thanks very much for that photo, monkeyjac. Wow, that is an amazing job they did with your seam. In my case the sink is centered on the island, with the widest part of the arch across from the sink and facing the family room directly. If I knew for sure that it would look like yours, I would have no concerns! This has actually been my hardest decision. I have come to think something like NVG could work best in my kitchen for a number of reasons. Not only does it complement both of my cabinet colors but I feel that as much as I love the movement granites, too much in a large space could easily overwhelm (there's a desk and bar area I'm covering, too). Thats something that my KD has cautioned me about as well and he loves granite with movement. Also looks like you put in the exact Artisan sink I'm considering. I'm between this or the Ticor. Hi. We installed out kitchen in 2012. We still haven't chosen or decided on a backslpash - it's the painted wall. I have a creamy Egyptian marble, - don't remember the name. I like unstructured European vintage-y kitchens. Many of them don't have backsplashes either. My stainless range has a stainless backsplash directly behind it. I had picked out some mini-clear glass subway tile for the backsplash that coincidentally matches my Prescott Green paint color perfectly but what if I decide to change wall color one day? Just this week I started thinking maybe I made my backsplash tile decision three years ago which was to have none. Our marble installers tried very hard to discourage us from marble in the kitchen but I have not regretted it. All those kitchens in southern Europe can't be wrong. FYI - If you are considering glass backsplash look at a product call 3-Form it comes in an amazing variety of colors,textures and imbedded items, two good friends used it in their kitchens. http://www.3-form.com/ Do what speaks to you in your home. Anyone have a bianco perlino (Biancone) marble backsplash?

Does anyone, by any chance, have a backsplash with a tumbled marble that goes by various names, either: "Bianco Perlino", "Perlino Bianco", or "Biancone" or "Asaigo"? If you do, I would love to see a photo- would you mind sharing? I just saw that unusual marble tile at a local tile supplier, and it appears to be a great match for my granite counter top--it is just very slightly off-white with very subtle veins. I googled it, but can't find any photos of it used in place- only photos of a close-up of a tile or of a slab. I could only find a few places selling the tiles in the U.S., so if anyone has any leads on other places selling it, I would love to know, as my local supplier only carried a few sizes and no trim pieces. I agree it doesn't seem to work when looking at your photo..

To answer your question, etching does happen on backsplashes especially around the cooking area, however most say it's barely noticeable to other people. Honed would probably work better than polished as far as the etches being noticeable.

Hi,

I have honed carrara marble backsplash in my kitchen and cook a TON. I have had it for over a year now and do not notice any etching or staining at all. I did have it sealed 2x after installation. The only thing I notice is the grout behind the sink is a little dirty but I wouldn't say cleaning is my strongest talent:o). HTH!

What I'm seeing on my monitor doesn't work together (marble looks dull and dirty -- more beige while the granite is glossy and grey), but to answer the question, if you put marble on the splash, it will etch. The character and chemical makeup of the stone won't change because you install it on a vertical surface instead of a horizontal one. In fact, your undercounter and hood lighting might make the etching more obvious. On the other hand, splatters on a splash tend to be fewer and smaller than spills on a counter. You have to figure out what bothers you. If you have a low tolerance, look at ceramic or glass. If you think you will be fine with it, look for a better lot of the marble.

Thanks everyone! I think you are correct about that marble not working--I was thinking that I could cull from the in-store boxes and pick out the darkest ones with no veining, but after looking at it some more in various lighting, I have to agree that I was letting my wishes get the better of my objectivity! Thanks for being honest! I will put up another post with my crackle subway tile sample and get your opinons of that one!
CKGM--I would love to see photos of your kitchen backsplash, since you said your granite is similar. Did you do subway tiles?
