First, before I talk about etching I want to say Thank you.
You posted a reply to me on the bathroom forum that made all the difference in the world in the way I felt/feel about my mini-budget bathroom remodel.
I've used your words (and attributed them to you) many times when I've been asked "Why????"
Again, many many thank yous.

Now, on to the etching----Yes, I recently (last month) frosted some glass.
A $10, yard sale, jet black light fixture with very white glass shades.

I didn't like the stark white shades but didn't have the funds to buy all new globe fixtures so I looked in my stash and found this PolyVine Etching Cream I had left over from the bathroom re-do.

Since the light bulb source showed while we are seated in the area I wanted to tone down those shades as much as possible and still have soft light coming through the glass shades, thus, etching working purfectly.
I added a teensy drop of burnt umber UT to the etching cream, mixed well and brushed it on the Insides of the glass shades.

I am using 25 watt bulbs and the bulbs are on at least 4 hours a night----so far, so good.
I like that the shades have been toned down and not so stark as I didn't like the contrast of the shades with the fixture I had repainted/darkened.

Wish I would have thought of spray-on frost as I'm sure it would have been much quicker!

WEEELLL, anyway, thank *you* for your kind words! I'm so glad you took to heart the reaction to your great work. And there's more of it on display here--I *love* making things work especially for one's own context rather than just buying them, don't you? :) Those shades look perfect against that hardware in that setting. So you did the inside with the acrylic frosting...I wonder how weatherproof it would be if I did it on the outside. I took some pics but DH hasn't been able to upload/shrink them for me to post yet...

I will have to take the fixtures to Michael's tomorrow and ask what they think about how to make them merely translucent -- if I should spray the frosting inside them or etch the outside of them...I'll mention your product and see what they think for this application.

But even this evening, I'm so psyched because I used my dear Target Tilemaster 10" saw (I really should name it, but TileMaster seems like a good name in itself, yes? :)) to grind off the edges so the glass canisters would fit into the fixtures. They now look like they were meant to be there, much nicer than the smoked cubes that they lights came with, and if I were using a cool-looking light bulb, I'd be *done*. But noooo. I have to go and use the CFLs. So there's another step.

But they'll be there soon! Then I just have to go to a light supply place to get them to help me figure out how to mount them onto the wall and I'll be done! Maybe by then DH will have uploaded the others, too, and I can show you what I'm talking about!
