Scanner glass foggy on the inside

We have an HP ScanJet 6300C scanner that's a few years old. I've been scanning pictures all morning and noticed they seem a little on the hazy side. I thought that was photographer-error, but I just noticed that the scanner glass is foggy on the inside! I can't find the manual for the scanner (it's around here somewhere, we've been remodeling...). Does anyone know how to clean it? And why does it get foggy on the inside?

All the time I've spent scanning photos this morningn is wasted!!!

Gosh Jen,
I am sorry I can not help you as my manual says nothing about cleaning the underside of the glass and I never had to.
I have an Epson I bought 6 years ago.

Funny you should ask - I have a scanner at home with the same problem and was wondering how it would be possible to clean the other side of the glass.

If you happen to find the answer, please post back here - we can't be the only two people with this problem. No smokers in my house or I might suspect that.

The year I drove thru there in my move to Mass., was early October. The grass was still green and beautiful. I don't think the highways are too bad, but I've been to Colorado, where they are much worse. I don't think however, that I've seen as many semi-trucks as I did on the highway there! ROTFL - I know what you mean by their opinion of "hot"! If it hits 80 degrees, it is insufferable heat to them! Most houses in the northern states don't even come with air conditioning. People just put in a window a/c if needed. Boston roads were literally built on cattle trails. The roads go each and every way, and you never know if you're going east, west, north, or south, or points in between! People would tell me to go north on Route (yes, it's always a "route") 20 north, when you actually were going east! I was so confused. Lots of roundabouts there, too. I used to spend a lot of time just going around and around and around trying to figure out which road I was supposed to take. Colorado is the same with bears, though. We went camping there one time, and a bear raided a trash can located by our camp site. Scared us to death. My husband got up in the tent and grabbed a wooden stake from one of our cots and was prepared to fight off the bear with it! Oh, yeah, like a bear is going to be intimidated by a piece of wood! Yes, the sky is not really open there. But, driving on highways, whenever the sun would shine thru, everybody virtually stopped their cars because they could not see the road with the sun shining thru the trees! LOL! They just weren't used to seeing the sun there. In summer, it didn't get dark until 10 p.m. I winter it got dark at 4 p.m. They are, however, much better at cleaning the snow covered roads there than we are here. Never had to worry about anything preventing me from getting to work. They also used the breakdown lanes to travel on! Scared me to death when I thought I was in the far right lane, to see someone speeding 70 mph on MY right! The laws allowed it during certain times of day because of the congestion. No ice tea in winter, and no ice tea without sugar added. You had to specifically order your tea WITHOUT sugar. In winter, you had to order hot tea and a glass of ice cubes if you wanted ice tea. Coffee was also served with sugar (when you ask for "regular" coffee, it comes with sugar) so you also had to request no sugar. No Mexican food or Bar-b-Que. But, lots of seafood and ethnic food. Which I loved! I remember one restaurant we used to frequent. We went there when it was close to Christmas, and people would just break out a Christmas song that all the patrons would sing along. It was fun! Yes, they have very different culture up there. I felt like I was in a foreign country! But, it is beautiful, the history is wonderful (we visited lots of historical sights), and the people were much nicer than we had been given to believe. Public transportation is WONDERFUL. I hope they do build that rail system in OKC that they are talking about due to gas prices. I believe there used to be a trolley system on Classen Blvd (I live just off of Classen), and the tracks were covered eventually with the median that now exists. Very different customs up there, but I loved my stay there (a year and a half). I got to see things I never would have otherwise and I don't regret it one bit. All glass doors on uppers or mix it up a bit?

We also have a mixture of glass and no glass upper cabinets. I won't post pictures because I post them too much. But here's how we decided on which to glass and which not too: First, it was a complete compromise between my husband and me. He thought we wouldn't be neat enough to keep all-glass cabinets pretty, and I wanted desperately to display my nice glassware. The solution was to make some doors with glass, and others not, even in one bank of cabinets. When you first walk into our kitchen, the first thing you see is the wall with the main sink. I thought those upper cabinets should be the prettiest, so we put glass doors on the double cabinets directly on either side of the sink, and no glass on the outside of those same cabinets. It works, I think, if you keep symmetry and do keep those cabinets neat. He agrees that the display spaces are nice, and I agree that it's a relief to have some place to hide our miscellaneous stuff, like kids plastic cups from various restaurants, the vitamin collection, measuring cups, etc.

Foggy Panes - Old Bay Window

The home was built in 1972. My window/door guy (who is ordering and installing my large Patio Door) indicated that it "looks" like someone re-installed the panes at least once. Probably the previous owners to me as they were pretty handy but frugal (they were residents for 15 years). All the windows in the house seem high-quality wood windows and were nicely taken care of. The two problems left for me are this huge Bay window and an original aluminum 12 Foot Door Wall (that you folks have helped me out with). It is just a shame that the two openings to view the backyard were yucky. I'm remodeling the rooms with these openings and I sure would like to finish them nicely. The doorwall is key as I CAN NOT do my floors until that is in. This Bay is a focal point in the dining room but as I said, it has shutters and I can put them back up. LOL. Money & Time -- those are always the hangups with remodeling, right?

Well, here we go.. Today I went with my two oldest sons to IKEA, and found out they had citrus in stock. Grafted calamondins and limequats. The only good looking(others were badly mishaped, bad grafting and so on..) were a calamondin. And I must admit I bought it. Well, I did also buy a bag of IKEAs growing media(pumice stones, I guess, some sort of lava rock) which I added in my 5-1-1 mix. I ripped off the unripe fruits(I counted 19 of them), did some root pruning due to it was badly rootbound. I also raked the roots to get rid of old soil and washed the whole plant under warm water. Let's see how it recovers. It has a few buds, and three of them looks like they are to open any day soon. Beautiful plant, and kids loved the juice of the unripe fruits. They just got a bit of it, I dont know what chemichals they use in the nursery..

Thank you both for commiserating. :-) We don't smoke here either and the scanner hasn't gotten a ton of use. There has to be something somewhere. Maybe I'll check the HP site and write to them.

That was fast... I went to the HP site, clicked on the link for support, searched on my scanner model, and found the FAQ which includes instructions about cleaning the glass. Unfortunately, this particular model series doesn't allow for cleaning under the glass.... :-(

Well thanks jenn - you were quick. I'm in Myrtle Beach for the winter......home is in Canada. My scanner is at home and at the moment, I'm not sure of the brand, my dh says he doesn't think it is an hp. At any rate, when I get home in the spring I'll be going to the website of the brand and see if I can clean the underside of the glass. You showed me where to start looking - thank you. I'm sorry yours cannot be cleaned - seems a complete waste doesn't it?

Yes Elaine, it does! My dad gave it to us for Christmas one year, a complete surprise since I didn't ask for one. I had only mentioned that I'd like to get one to work on projects. I don't want to tell him about the glass because it will make him feel bad about it. :-(

I'm scanning photos of my nephew to insert into a slide show I'm making. If it was a professional project or a wedding gift, I wouldn't continue or I'd get another scanner. But, fortunately, my family won't care about the haze on these pictures and might not even notice it. There are many others in the slide show that aren't scanned and look much better.

I have seen this for years, not sure what causes the haze, but it could be from the oil on the motor, or the slide rails. Anyway, usually after the cover is removed, if you remove the screws from the lower cover, CAREFULLY remove the glass and clean it with windex or the like, if it is oil on the haze, you may need a grease cutter of such. I would then treat the glass with something like rain-X to keep it from building up again.

My mechanically-inclined hubby fixed it! He removed the screws and the part with the glass came right off. It was an oily film that we removed with glass cleaner and Miracle cloth, followed by a clean dry cloth. It looks MUCH better now.

I'm guessing the reason why HP doesn't provide instructions to clean this one is because it does require some mechanical sense and a special screw driver for torx screws to remove the part with the glass. Just guessing though....

Urlee, no doubt about that. But also, if it is difficult to clean and someone not so mechanically inclined doesn't get it put back together, that person may do whatever it takes to make HP pay for their own mistake.

Our scanner was a gift from our father and is only a few years old... I'm not about to replace it now just because the glass is foggy!

I have a Scanjet 5470c, and the glass was foggy inside as well. I simply unscrewed two screws on the underside nearest the "top edge" of the scanning surface, which enabled me to open the case a bit. The underside of the glass was right there in front of me.

I just wiped it down with a clean cotton rag moistened with some Windex, followed by another soft dry cotton rag. I popped the case closed, resecured the two screws, and my glass was clean. Nothin' to it.

Thank you !!! I just cleaned my HP 4470 glass. just lift off the top cover and remove the 2 phillips screws,and you can carefully get your hand underneath to clean it !
