planningnut, I do not have pix to post -- however, given that you already have windows, you may not need uppers with glass.

However, if you wish to display special objects then you might want to choose some uppers with glass.

IMO, glass does a nice job of breaking the monotony of wood doors all over the kitchen, at the same time offering a place to display your fine glassware, china etc. Yet, I know people who love the all-wood look so they went with all wood uppers.

My current kitchen only has a corner upper, and two big windows (equal size, 4') on the long wall. The windows bring in sufficient openness. This kitchen was inherited from previous owners, but I have never felt overwhelmed by the expanse of wood due to the windows.

Hi Lsandler - I love your cabinets - makes me wish desperately that I had higher ceilings! That was definitely my first choice.

homeybird - I think that's a great idea about too much glass etc. - I really don't have anything to display - I was just trying to keep it airy and open (I'd rather hide stuff!)

Any suggestions or pictures on how to mix them up ie/ where to put the glass doors and where to put the wood doors?

First, glass is expensive, so if cost is an issue then maybe just one cabinet for dramatic impact -- in your kitchen, maybe the angled upper. Also, My KD does not like to put glass uppers right next to a range because of the cleaning issue. Finally, glass cabinets are used to set off display-worthy items, so weigh whether you have that much nice stuff and have room elsewhere for all the plastic everyday stuff. FWIW, I solved that problem by ordering opaque frosted glass -- you can see the glass but, I hope, won't be able to see the melamine spiderman plates behind it.

I have three upper cabinets with glass doors. Everything else is wood. Martha Stewart I am not. I enjoy my dishes, they're functional and a little bit fun -- but not worthy of display in the kitchen. I put curtains in the glass cabinets for a while -- then I etched the glass to obscure the contents of the cabinets. Not a fan of glass cabinets in the kitchen unless you have the space to properly display and highlight your treasures.

Mix it up!

We have a combination... Love it! We display the pretty stuff, hide the other (ie spices, etc).

Here's our combo:

On the other side of the L-island, is the DW, plus two large storage drawers for dishes, mixing bowls, measuring cups, colanders, etc.

a mix is better because you really don't want to have to keep all your cabinets so neat and tidy.

in the kitchen we're working on now, we're doing 42" cabinets with all wood, and topping them with 12" boxes that will have leaded seedy glass and be lit from the inside. kind of similar to lsandler's kitchen above.

I used to have all glass doors. I never noticed it in real life, but when I look at pics of my old kitchen, it looked really sloppy to have EVERYTHING visible.

Now we have NO glass doors, and we are greatly enjoying the "visual calm." I'm glad even not to have them ANYWHERE.

We also have a mixture of glass and no glass upper cabinets. I won't post pictures because I post them too much. But here's how we decided on which to glass and which not too: First, it was a complete compromise between my husband and me. He thought we wouldn't be neat enough to keep all-glass cabinets pretty, and I wanted desperately to display my nice glassware.

The solution was to make some doors with glass, and others not, even in one bank of cabinets. When you first walk into our kitchen, the first thing you see is the wall with the main sink. I thought those upper cabinets should be the prettiest, so we put glass doors on the double cabinets directly on either side of the sink, and no glass on the outside of those same cabinets. It works, I think, if you keep symmetry and do keep those cabinets neat.

He agrees that the display spaces are nice, and I agree that it's a relief to have some place to hide our miscellaneous stuff, like kids plastic cups from various restaurants, the vitamin collection, measuring cups, etc.

hi hmsweethm - where can I see your pictures? Sounds alot like what I'm looking for...

I can dream about glass cabinets above cabinets... but not with 8' ceilings :)
