Do you regret having your garden on a garden tour?
Comments (6)I host a garden party each year. This year, we had so much fun in the spring that my guests talked me into a fall shindig, which will take place on Sept 24, in case any of you wanna come. I've been clearing out the common stuff so I can grow primarily the unusual plants. When I invite people, I refer them to a website where I've set up rules for attending the party. And most everyone has followed the rules without any problem. No one has stolen anything. Everyone has been very respectful. One of the things we do at my parties is swap plants. I tell newbies that they can bring anything of value to swap for plants. They can bring jewelry, garden tools, soil, birdhouses, books, furniture, anything they'd put in a yard sale--anything they think they can trade. I am a much more advanced gardener than most, so they bring me Donna Dewberry books and supplies, sawdust, wooden bed frames so I can make garden benches, etc. With my first party, there were only about 15 people here. And I offered a "plant poaching expedition" thru my gardens. After all the trading was done, each guest was allowed to pick out one special plant they really really wanted from my gardens, and I'd get them a piece of it. Surprisingly, every guest chose something different, so I didn't have to tell anyone I didn't have anymore of a particular plant to share. Everyone left here with something they'd been craving. And most have come back for subsequent parties. With gas prices so high, I'm afraid attendance to this month's party will be limited. So I may again do the plant poaching expedition. It went over so well a couple years ago. Have a party. You'll meet fellow gardeners and make new friends. And man, don't you just long to show off? I collect unusual plants because I love them, but I also love to hear people ooh and ahhh as they come around the corner and spot something they've never seen before. You might also type up a little schpill about your gardens, when you began, how each section came to be, what plants you have in different gardens, what they mean to you, etc. A friend of mine did that recently when her gardens were on tour and people loved all the "history" of the gardens. I'm going to do that for my party this month. Have a party and have fun with it. NancyAnn...See MoreDo you regret having a Stainless Steel Backguard?
Comments (33)I have an early model (before Fisher/Paykel) open burner DCS with a 12 inch back guard. I thought it might be a problem when I first got it but it's been exceptionally easy to keep clean. I don't bother with special cleaners. I just use a damp microfiber cloth. It turned out to be so easy that I went with a full stainless back splash with chrome warming racks instead of the tile I had originally planned on in the area. The first 12" gets most of the spatter. I would never want tile there now. We are in the middle of a full remodel and I am cooking without the back splash or a hood currently but even without the hood the riser is no problem to keep clean. I do fry a lot too. My range is a workhorse. I don't obsess about it looking showroom fresh. But even with the neglect it comes clean with water and a cloth. The only part that gets cleaner is the oven. I take apart the top every month or so and clean the nooks and crannies again using plain water and a microfiber cloth....See MoreOpen shelving - what to put on them?
Comments (14)Your shelves are really lovely. I agree with Moton's idea to collect what you love over time... I wish I could do shelves like that but my kitchen is so small. I have a really nice, very old baker's rack at the far end of my kitchen where I keep glass bottles and jars I have collected over time from antique stores, travels, etc. I decided to use this in a way that would be both attractive to the eye and functional for a small kitchen. I use the glass jars and bottles for candy, cookies, dried fruits, extra tea bags, various baking supplies like bittersweet chocolate, brown sugar, etc... The glass pieces are interesting and the contents are colorful! You wouldn't believe how nice a simple glass jar full of marshmallows or tea bags can look! When a gang of 15 came for Thanksgiving, I gave the rack that old-time candy store feel. You can be so creative and really have fun with your shelves, especially if you don't "need" the space. For me, I never run out of things to throw into a nice glass jar. Right now while heavily baking for the holidays I have several jars filled with different nuts and another shelf is holding pretty tins with the baked goods in them ready for gifting. A friend of mine has open shelving like yours and she collects antique canister sets. She keeps several sets on the shelves and puts all kinds of stuff in them (with labels on the bottoms so she knows what's what!). It's a gorgeous collection. I don't think you need to stay kitchen-y though... if there is something you love, you'll make it work, just like you did with your beautiful kitchen! :)...See Morenatural cherry cabs & natural red oak floors - do you regret decision?
Comments (10)Thanks to all for your comments! No going back on the natural cherry cabinets (they were just installed) so looks like I will have to address any issues with the finish we use on the red oak floors. I think my problem is that I really hate to put a stain on beautiful hardwood but, as you both note, a contrast is considered best. Guess I was just hoping against hope that the cherry will darken enough so that I would still have a contrast. An option suggested by my kitchen designer is to go with a Provincial stain on the floors. I really value her advice... just resisting staining that wood! :-)...See Moreitsallaboutthefood
