Open Shelves -- love them? hate them?
Comments (38)thanks for all the input -- very helpful in thinking about this decision. I just wrote a long post that got eaten before I submitted, so I'll be brief. ctycdm, that is a gorgeous kitchen! magsnj, your pantry and space is so charming - the blue cabs are adorable. We don't have a pantry space in his home (1957 house), so we're having to be creative with our cabinet layout. I think we're going to do a modified version of open shelves. I really do love the look, and I think functionality wise they work for us (I too get sick of opening and closing cabinet doors), but we're lacking cabinet space in this kitchen. It's just not that big. So, we're contemplating a smaller cabinet with a shelf underneath for storing everyday items like plates, cups and wine glasses. It would look sort of similar to the henrybuilt ones that iheartgiantschaunzers posted or maybe even something like this (our cabs won't look anything like this, but this is just the general idea): [[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/mid-century-modern-suite-hampstead-transitional-home-office-vancouver-phvw-vp~4309142) [Midcentury Home Office[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/midcentury-modern-home-office-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_732~s_2115) by Vancouver Interior Designers & Decorators i3 design group Another design we're considering is (kitchen is not my style, but just an example): [[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/tarrytown-house-asian-kitchen-austin-phvw-vp~101835) [Asian Kitchen[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/asian-kitchen-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_709~s_2102) by Austin Architects & Designers Webber + Studio, Architects Still working out the design kinks but this thread has been very helpful, so thanks!...See MoreWhat Would You put under these Wall Shelves?
Comments (20)I like the idea of the three posted by k9arlene better. I think the two things from Hokku are not as good together as they are separately, and the bookcase, while attractive, is "a lot of look" for the space. The Ikea triplets are compatible with your scheme, and you could use any of the three colors they come in. Then a tall lamp toward the corner, like the ones below from Overstock, and a container of some kind beside it to collect mail and keys and the like under the pair of shelves. And to balance the whole wall, a large framed graphic under the high shelf - perhaps a piece of Marimekko fabric, a square of wallpaper, or a reproduction of one of Josef Albers' color studies? Because the space is low, an actual image or a mirror would be problematic, since the center wouldn't be at eye level if you're older than eight ... Comments (7)I basically agree, although depending in the rest of the room, making this a little focal niche with paint or tile might be quite charming. You can have fun with it to see how you like it. What strikes me is that bead board, which is a rather humble material, doesn't really go with the more elegant, front-parlor door style. It can look right on the ceiling, as if it were original to the plainer kitchens of the past and left there as the room continued to evolve to today, but I wouldn't deliberately spot it around. If it were on the wall originally, it'd have been floor to ceiling or partial height on much or most of the room....See MoreWhat To Put On Top of Built In Shelves
